Guest guest
Hi all. I was just wondering if anyone lives in the catchment for the West Berkshire PCT and gets their NDT prescribed from GP? I have been told it is not prescribable in my area. I am wanting to try NDT after limited success with Levo. I am not sure if my GP is just telling me no the PCT won't allow it for the sake of it or if its actually true. If I decide to self treat which brand is best and is International Pharmacy reliable? How long does it take to arrive? I have been on only 50mcg of Levo, just stepping up to 75mcg after much effort to get the Endo to agree. He's now discharged me and says there is nothing more he can do (wouldn't entertain the idea of T3) even though I still feel pretty awful most of the time and can't work. I'm only 29. My latest TSH was 1.05 (0.2 - 4.2) and fT4 17.5 (12-22). I do definitely feel better on Levo than nothing at all but still a long way off being better, and I refuse to accept ME is a suitable diagnosis for me. I'm taking good doses of all the vits and minerals (including Iron as my ferritin was only 25, which went up to 33 after 3 months of supplementation when last measured 2 months ago). I will get a re test with my next thyroid bloods in a months time. Thanks.
Guest guest
Hi as far as I am aware, there is no ban on prescribing NDT, either in the NHS as a whole or for any PCT, though I could be wrong. I think mostly doctors just think they are not allowed to prescribe it. They are, as Dr Skinner's case just proved. There is some legal issue in that it isn't licensed, therefore is not covered under their standard GP insurance, therefore they must prescribe it 'on their own recognisance' or some such phrase. I have heard of doctors who would like to prescribe it but cannot, because the other members of their practice have vetoed it (perhaps fearing the insurance issue). If you DO find a prescriber in this region, please do let me know, as I'm in Reading! I'll keep a note of your name and do the same if I should find such a doctor. cheers, x Helen > > Hi all. > > I was just wondering if anyone lives in the catchment for the West Berkshire PCT and gets their NDT prescribed from GP? Guest guest
In the UK there is no ban on any doctor prescribing four particular brands of natural thyroid extract i.e. Armour Thyroid, Erfa 'Thyroid' Nature Throid or Westhroid. This has come from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)-see attached). However, because it remains unlicensed (has never required a licence) doctors must take full responsibility for this because their medical insurance does not cover them. Hi as far as I am aware, there is no ban on prescribing NDT, either in the NHS as a whole or for any PCT, though I could be wrong. 1 of 1 File(s) MHRA confirmation re Natur1.doc
Guest guest
I have sent the recommended doctors list to you privately . I have also answered the question about whether doctors can or cannot prescribe natural thyroid extract in my response to Helen. There are several Primary Care Trusts who fund natural thyroid extract for doctors in their area who prescribe it for their patients, but there are also PCT who will not. This is a case of post-code lottery and it is up to individual patients to persuade their PCT otherwise if they do refuse by giving them the true facts. PCT's refuse because they have been given incorrect or misleading information about natural thyroid extract so you could copy out the TPA rebuttal to the British Thyroid Association's statement on Armour Thyroid-v- T4-only therapy to show them the true facts http://www.tpa-uk.org.uk/resp_bta_armour.pdf .. You can also copy off the document " Facts About Armour Thyroid " (see attached) which should answer all their questions about NDT. International Pharmacy is very reliable. It can take up to 3 weeks to arrive and all the pharmacies in our list who sell T3 or natural thyroid extract are reliable. You may be feeling still unwell because you are not taking a high enough dose of levothyroxine and you should increase this every 6 weeks. If the endocrinologist has discharged you, and you are still suffering, and your GP is unable to help you, then you have no other option other than to take your thyroid health into your own hands. Keep asking questions and we will try to help wherever we can. Luv - Sheila I was just wondering if anyone lives in the catchment for the West Berkshire PCT and gets their NDT prescribed from GP? Have you seen anyone there? I'd like to chat about my experiences there, as they have not been good at all, if you agreed to me contacting you privately?
