Guest guest
There's an oddity in the online forum (I think) Twice, in the context of hypOthyroidism the doc refers to Block and Replace as meaning take enough T4 snippet 1 You need to " block " your bodies own supply of thyroxine (by giving enough T4) and " replace " it completely otherwise your next blood tests will be meaningless & confusing.) snippet 2 It should now be standard practice to " block and replace " . This means using a large enough dose of T4 to block the bodies own production and provide enough for the body. Now I'm certain that what is normally meant by Block and Replace is for hypothyroidism, ie Block with carbimzole (or whatever) and Replace witn T4 (or whatever). Has anyone here come across this notion for hypo. Is it factually correct? Steve

Agreed, block and replace is for hypER He may have been trying to refer to a " full replacement dose " , ie enough T3 or natural to fully suppress TSH and shut your own thyroid down. This means a TSH of around 0.01 and if you do it with T4 only you will almost certainly end up producing too much RT3. If your " set point " is wrong, ie TSH is regulating to the wrong level of FT3, then a full replacement dose is necessary to get the FT3 up. Dosing for TSH is pretty useless and totally useless in this circumstance Nick
Guest guest
Hi my only thought on this is are they talking about patients with thyroid cancer? This means stopping the thyroid producing anything {Block] and [replace] with synthetic .
