Guest guest
I have had more blood tests and have tried twice to get the reference ranges, but the surgery tell me its not possible! What on earth can I do to try and get them? I have just had (minor) shoulder surgery and still have my frozen shoulder and when I am under the weather more than normal I feel like I have no strength left to battle/be assertive. :-( Lynne
Guest guest
Have you asked them for a print out? I know they will have to clear it with a doctor but that should show reference ranges. I know if I ring I just get told the results are ok, you don't need to come in and bye! Ask whoever gives you the results rather than reception, if possible. Guest guest
Hi Lynne Ask the surgery for a printout of your results. The reference ranges should be included with the results (they are on mine). Maybe the reception staff at your surgery aren't sure what you're referring to... I think I had the same problem but when I got the printout I pointed out the ranges to the receptionist and she said she hadn't realised what they were!! Hope this helps..... Guest guest
Hi Lynne I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. How on earth do the doctors interpret the results if they have not been given a reference range for the tests they have asked for. It is very important to know whether a result is at the bottom, the middle or the top of the reference range. It does appear that if anybody's results come ANYWHERE within the range, the poor patient is being told " you don't have a problem - your results are within the range " - and send them packing. I would just write a letter to the Head of Practice, and tell him/her that you want the reference range to all the tests you have had done - that way, there is no risk of anybody getting upset. Doctors cannot withhold such information from you under the Data Protection Act 1998. If the surgery doesn't know what the reference ranges are, then they should telephone the local laboratory to find out. You could also slip in a stamped addressed envelope so they can send them to you. Good luck, and keep us posted. Guest guest
Thanks for everyone's messages. I did get a print out but it doesn't show the reference ranges, that's why I asked the surgery again - with no joy. Sheila - I will follow your advice. Many thanks. Guest guest
Lynn, when you write to the surgery, one question I would most definitely ask is, how can doctors interpret their patients laboratory test results if there is no reference range. It is very important to know whether the results are at the bottom, the middle, the top or even OUTSIDE of the reference range. Luv - Sheila Thanks for everyone's messages.
