Types of Vitamin C

Hello everyoneI need to stock up on Vitamin C. I've been using Holland and Barrett Pure Vitamin C powder (ascorbic acid) which I mix with water. I probably bought it because it was good value. But it's not a pleasant experience - very acid. And I don't think it can be good for my teeth enamel.

I notice that there is Vitamin C in the form of  Magnesium Ascorbate, Zinc Ascorbate or Calcium Ascorbate - which are all available from Your Nutrition Shop. I'm wondering about trying magnesium ascorbate - but if I were to take larger doses, would I be at risk of taking in too high a dose of magnesium? I would also like a cost effective option if taking a few grams of the stuff a day.

I use amla powder. My pharmacist sells me empty capsules very cheap and I stuff

them myself. I buy it organic online for 12.99 a pound plus shipping. If you

do your research amla has the most absorbable vitamin C you can get. I thought

I'd be taking 4-5 capsules a day but don't because it's too much. I take one or

two daily is all. I have no idea how many grams it is, I just know I get a very

fast bowel response when I take two together.

Hi Lynne

I use ASDA brand Fizzy Vit C in raspberry flavour (no Aspartame)

about 1.25pound for 20 x 1gm tabs but relatively expensive if used in large

numbers.

As a route to using Vit C powder with magnesium ascorbate, combining them

together would help " buffer " the acidity.

They should all dissolve in water and, sufficiently diluted, ought not to affect

your teeth ~ always worth a try to find out what you can tolerate.

I use light magnesium carbonate to add to the fizzy drink to get some magnesium

into me rather than to vit C powder, but either way, adjust to taste and to

bowel tolerance.

Overall ~ the cost with light magnesium carbonate and your bulk Vit C powder

would keep 'in stock' for a long time.

best wishes

Bob

I made a mistake when I said camu camu was in a 1lb bag, it is 3 and half oz !

Sorry if I misled anyone. I looked at so much different stuff that day and

obviously got confused. I am trying to find all the nutrients needed from food

sources instead of capsules, or as much as is possible anyway.

Thank you everyone. Really interesting. A few suggestions I'd never heard of. A good idea getting empty capsules from the chemist. I didn't know that was an option. I might stick with the powdered ascorbic acid but am considering putting it in capsules. There's info in the files on ascorbic acid combining with mineral salts in the stomach making the minerals more easily absorbable - and I think I need that effect at present!

When I use the powdered form I mix into grapefruit juice and drink through a

straw - to save my teeth!

I currently use magnesium ascorbate, but wonder if sodium ascorbate is better??
