They miss the familiarity of their own room, their Pokemon, Neopet, and Barbie toys, and the fresh air of the outdoors. Well, we may not be able to bring their rooms to them, but we can bring a little of the outdoors and some of their favorite toys-along with some cheer-by sending a floral arrangement with a great kid theme. In a study conducted at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, flowers were proven to immediately boost the mood of those who received them. While the research was carried out using adults as the participants, surely children appreciate the beauty of flowers as well (if they didn't, you wouldn't get so many hand-picked bouquets of dandelions and other wildflowers!). And, flowers are an excellent way to bring in a little of the beauty of nature that the patient is sure to be missing. To further boost the happiness a simple gift of flowers brings, try mixing in some of the child's favorite toys and interests-your florist will be glad to help you. Just give them a call or stop by and talk about the purpose of the flowers and what the child likes and dislikes. While your florist may not have the toys on hand to add to the arrangement, he or she will be happy to incorporate gifts you provide into a carefully and beautifully designed arrangement. To get you thinking about how to add some fun to your floral gift and reduce the boredom involved in a hospital stay, here are a few ideas: * For the Pokemon Fan: Mount packs of Pokemon trading cards on floral card sticks and tuck them in among the flowers. The child will have fun " picking " the packages, opening them, and discovering if they've gotten that rare card they've been hoping to acquire. You could also place Pokemon figures or a Pokemon video game in amongst the flowers. * For the Barbie Fan: Bring in a Barbie doll and some doll clothing. Ask your florist to include the doll in the arrangement. The clothing can be safely mounted to sticks and added to the arrangement. They can then be removed and used to dress up Barbie. There are also a number of Barbie video games, coloring books, and other toys to keep the patient busy. Your florist can put together a gift box with the Barbie items on one side and flowers in Barbie's signature color (pink) on the other side. * For the Neopets Fan: Like Pokemon, Neopets also have their own trading cards, video games, and figures. Again, ask your florist to incorporate the gifts into the arrangement or create a box containing flowers on one side and gifts on the other. These are just a few ideas using today's popular children's toys, but they can be used with virtually any favorite toy or interest. Florists love to bring cheer to people, and ill children are certainly no exception. Ask your florist for help in creating a gift that's sure to bring the patient some fun-whether it's Pokemon, Barbie, or Neopets-and help speed the child's recovery. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers, a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
