Guest guest
Does anyone have an opinion or advice they could offer please? It seems I have a conversion from T4 to T3 or some problem at the cellular level as my T3 is in the red in my 24 hour urine indicating " functional hypothyroidism " . I have all the classic signs of being hypo, plus raised antibody levels. Memory is causing me increasing problems & I am struggling to cope with 2 days at work, it is a responsible job and I don't want to give my notice in. I had 2 years off as I was ill hence I now only work 2 days and would hate to loose it but it is making me worse. My muscles are particularly bad & my husband admits I have noticeably gone down hill the last 6 months (you will know the rest!). I have food allergies that I am dealing with, with quite a bit of success following the York test & help of a dietician. My adrenal glands show a dip at the second sample into the low area. I have managed reasonably well to cover up depression but do struggle. I am ridiculously cold & have to keep exercising to feel reasonable throughout the day and sometimes in the night as my muscles both me. A GP refused to refer me to Dr S & wanted me to see a local endocrinologist. I had no choice but to agree, but first I rang the endo's secretary and asked if he ever treated with T3. She said that she had definately typed it up but not often. Hence I have an appointment March 26th. Meanwhile I have been advised here that the BEST I can hope for is a diagnosis, which would be great, and maybe a trial of thyroxine. Reading Dr P's book I read that thyroxine could be dangerous and cause a toxic situation if a person cannot convert the T4 to T3 due to overload of T4 in the circulation (I think I understood that correctly). My question is: I would love to get this sorted and feel better, as I guess most people here have felt, but I wondered if I could refer myself to Dr P while I am still waiting for this appt with local endo? or would this confuse things? I don't know the local endo - he may be ok, but if the best I can expect is a trial of thyroxine could I not just use this appointment to have a diagnosis that may be useful to have with my GP and meanwhile see Dr P - OR wait and see the endo and then wait to see Dr P or Dr S afterwards (as GP said if I did not get on with endo she would reconsider referral to Dr S after all!). I don't know which one would be best. Basically I would like to avoid poor treatment & side affects from thyroxine if its not the best, but I would like to settle a diagnosis incase I need prescriptions in the future. Sorry this is a bit complicated but my head is going around trying to figure out what is best. Also whether Dr S or Dr P would be most suitable (feel free to PM me if liked). I think Dr P has a waiting list and so thought it might get the ball rolling if I requested an appointment now. Maybe I just need to be patient?! Thanks, (Thanks Sheila for the wonderful opportunity to air and receive such informed and helpful advice & be educated re this disease, you are appreciated).
