Guest guest
Hi, I'm about a month in to my kefir making as well and a first time poster. I'm having the same problem as . I was using an organic, ultra pasturized, homogenized whole milk and my kefir was going along great. Over the weekend I started to read up on milk and switched to non-organic, homogenized whole milk (trying to get away from the ultra pasturized) My kefir now bubbles up to the top with a cauliflower look to it and it's more watery than it used to be. I would like to switch to raw milk but don't have access to that right now. Have I messed up my grains forever? Does anyone have a recommendation? thanks! -- Gayle on
Guest guest
YOUR GRAINS ARE HAPPY! Your milk is fermenting faster, that's why there's watery stuff (whey). You'll notice that they're growing, too. Cut down on the time you ferment, since it's going faster. Liz > > Hi, I'm about a month in to my kefir making as well and a first time > poster. Guest guest
The milk was making them very unhappy! I changed my milk to a very lightly pasturized unhomogenized brand and what a difference! Raw is best but I can't get that too easily where I live. Guest guest
Thank you all for those going through the same thing and for the people helping out with suggestions ! Liz, I've noticed the whey in grains I used to have and this looks like white cloudy water. like if a person were to mix some white out with I had tried fermenting it for 12 hours.. that's why I experimented by trying again for 24-48 hours in hopes of thickening it and making that off smell go away. After caring for different grains for about a year previously.. I never saw this happen and the smell.. almost a malt yeast smell-with the most recent grains I had purchase this month. I read somewhere that the extra foamy surface could be an overgrowth of yeast.. I think on the DOM site? Do you think they will mellow out eventually? ~ > > YOUR GRAINS ARE HAPPY! Guest guest
Just wanted to give an update on the grains. They haven't gotten better in almost 2 weeks of owning them. I hated to do it.. but I tossed them after trying the suggestions and not seeing real improvement. I can't begin to tell you how much milk and yogurt I've wasted, or tried to work with the temperature. I received another set of grains from another seller and after 24 hours of care, these grains did exactly what I was looking for ! I'm thinking the grains I had received from someone else were possibly damaged in transport or they put too much milk and air in the packaging( the all the other better grains came in hardly any milk and air in the packaging). This makes 4 sets of grains that I've dealt with and the problem one was just the one of the 4 that I've had. So I'm disappointed that those grains didn't work but am so relieved that the new grains I've received worked so quickly like the grains I used to have in the past! Thank you all for all of your advice ! I'm just chalking it up to random bad grains. ~ Now I gotta go and copy & paste this message in another places I've posted this problem to so that if anyone has the problems that I do, that they don't give up hope of having milk kefir grains.. just keep trying to revive them or get new grains because someone's bound to have some that work the way you're hoping they would. > > Hi ! My name is and I'm new to this group. I'm a temporary stay at home mom to a toddler and one on the way and with my husband for ten years. We're from New York. I'm new to WAPF but have been using kefir grains for about a year. I had to throw away the batch of my great grains because I had a problem with fruit flies which somehow managed to get through my cheesecloth cover. > > Here's the problem that I'm dealing with right now: > > I've been using kefir grains that I've purchased from different e-bay sellers. I have a few questions about the types of milk kefir grains because the new grains I have don't smell, look or act like the ones I've gotten in the past from members *who don't have anymore grains for sale*. I've had slimy/stringy/rice pudding looking grains that left the milk almost a yogurt consistency and smell good. They were very reliable and consistent. > > The new grains look like cauliflower with holes all over it.. musty yeast smell.. and the kefir is too liquidy for my taste. No matter how much or how little milk I put or how long I let it ferment (24-48 hours) there's no change. > The new grains foam up the milk so it kind of looks like marshmallow or soap suds on top whereas the old grains made a thin flat yellowish surface on top of the milk sort of like a blanket of milk fat that you usually see stuck on the top of unhomogenized whole milk or a sliver of butter floating in milk. I had always purchased organic milk kefir grains.. sometimes from raw milk and used it in my (not ultra) pasteurized organic whole milk and always loved the texture.. how quick it thickened up and the almost fresh very milk cheese like smell of the old grains.. > > I understand that grains can come in different shapes and show different characteristics but how do I even get the kind of grains I used to get then? Guest guest
Hi I've ordered grains on multiple occasions as my work takes me on the road. Of all the grains I've ordered from Marilyn only one batch was very slow to get started, and just didn't seem to ever get as prolific as other batches. I can only guess what might happen during transport of the grains, are they accidentally frozen or roasted in the weather, sitting on the backs of trucks or waiting to be loaded into a plane... I think that the price of the grains is reasonable, so I kept going with a batch that took a little coaxing to make good kefir but never grew much in the way of extra grains, until I was ready to order another batch. Once out of many grain orders goes under the 'things happen' category. Joanna
Guest guest
Joanna, I purchased grains from Marilyn about a month ago. and I can't stop them from growing. I'm using 2% milk from Winco, nothing special. Pretty soon I'm going to have to start peddling my Kefir around the neighborhood or purchase another refrigerator. I think Kefir grains would be a good subject for a comedic horror movie. Guest guest
Welcome, Susie! I like your answers. I think that's sufficient to sum up that you've done your research and made your decision. Period. It's very time-consuming to convince someone even if you had printouts on you to support your views. And there's really no magic anything you can say, any earth-shattering fact that people will listen to if their ears are clamped shut. Anyway, glad to have you here! Guest guest
Hi SusieJust remember that they are your children and therefore it is your choice as to whether you have them vaccinated or not.Evidence shows that unvaccinated children are healthier children. Read http://www.whale.to/a/children1.html There are loads of good short quotes on this link from some of the top professionals. The medical professionals will tell you all sorts to get you to have your children vaccinated, I have outlined a few of their usual tactics here http://vactruth.com/2011/11/15/5-ways-doctors-seduce-mothers/ Most of what they say is untrue.Good luck Susie it is great to have you. From: susietunks <susietunks@...>Subject: introductionVaccinations Date: Tuesday, 29 November, 2011, 23:47 Hi, there! Guest guest
I feel the same way. Totally blank when someone asks me anything..but this is what I have done: memorize most of the list of ingredients and start with “have you read the package insert of ingredients???” Formaldehyde, aluminum, polysorbate 20, polysorbate 80, antibiotics, foreign dna, human dna, ..go through the lists and find about 6 things that you can recall and memorize those. And start reading lots and just try to recall one or 2 things then you can say I don’t recall where I read it but….And then KEEP everything! I have email folders of “stuff to read from vax list” stuff to keep from vax lists’, vaccine info class, stuff to be read later..and it goes into one of those so I can reference it when I need it. Guest guest
This is great! I am a homeschooler and know parents who have made a similar leaflet for why they homeschool. Anytime they encounter a grouchy responder (e.g: what are your kids doing out of school today?), they hand the person the leaflet with a smile and tell them it's all right there! This vax one would be perfect too!I really appreciate all of you welcoming me to the group and supporting me the way you have! I feel sooo much better! The fact that you have little "ibids" for the info resources at the end of each fact is very important! Thank you to each one of your for your welcome and comforting support! I will be sure to read more and worry less! :)Susie introduction Hi, there! Our kids have not been vacc'd since they were babies. They are now 10 and 12. Guest guest
Hi, I am woman in my 40's and I believe I may have thyroid issue. I have just been diagnosed with depression and have been prescribed citolopram. However I feel that the depression is a symptom and not the problem. I had a thyroid test 7 years ago after pushing my GP. My symptoms were Noncyclical Breast pain, hair loss and weight gain, abnormal bleeding and loss of sex drive. I never got to see the test results but I was told they were normal. Since then I have been diagnosed with Endometriosis and polyps, (for which I have been given the Mirena coil) cervical erosion, chronic urticaria and of course the depression. Other symptoms swelling on my toes and occasional white toes, regular numbness in my little fingers on both hands, very dry skin and forgetfulness. To cap it all my son has been diagnosed with enlarged vestibular aqueduct, which can be an indicator of Pendred syndrome. They have yet to test his thyroid function as he has not yet reached puberty. I have found in the past that GPs are not very sympathetic, one (female Dr.) told me re: my sex drive to 'lie back and think of England' I feel like I'm getting nowhere, I'm glad I came across this site
Guest guest
HI LALA I hope you don't end up like I did with being fobbed off with psychiatric drugs. They also add to the weight problem and many of your symptoms sound like Hypothyroidism. I also had a cervical erosion and quite a few polyps. After 14 years on Pimozide I ended up with breast cancer and incontinent. Tamoxifen to treat cancer caused a rather large polyp that filled the whole of the uterus, and caused a lot of pain. I would also urge any woman not to be sterilized as that worsened my condition and at the time I was not told that it can damage the bowel, in fact it causes a cystorecocele, and with the large ammount off weight put on by psychiatric drugs in turn pushing down on the bladder causes it to worsen. No psychiatrist will ever put me on drugs again, and like you I feel that depression is a sign of another illness and Hypothyroidism does cause depression. I don't know if your marriage is still holding out but mine failed, and both my daughters have denied me knowing my 7 grandchildren, and all I can say is that they will not do themselves anygood either. I am sure that you will get a lot of support here. We have all experianced some nasty remarks from Doctors and the lady Doctor should be ashamed of herself, but I vowed never to see a male gynaecologist again and waited longer to see a female, but never again would I want to see her (all in the mind she said). I have also had problems with one female GP who struck me off, but I was not the only one to have problems with her. Guest guest
Thanks for you reply Kathleen. My marriage has been very rocky lately to the point we had decided to split, but my husband is now being very supportive and is as keen as me to investigate the possible thyroid issue. My mother suffered many of my symptoms including the polyps and cervical erosion, but unfortunately she died last year so I can no longer ask her on her symptoms, and what was done for her. My husband is going to attend the doctors appointment with me so he can also take on board what the doctor says and back me up if he feels we are being fobbed off. I'm so sorry to hear what you have been through, and the lack of help you received from 'professionals' and perhaps lack of support from your family. My dogs vet listened to me more than my last doctor..very frustrating Lala
Guest guest
Hi, I am woman in my 40's and I believe I may have thyroid issue.........I have found in the past that GPs are not very sympathetic, one (female Dr.)told me re: my sex drive to 'lie back and think of England' Hello Lala and welcome, "To lie back and think of England" eh??.... I can't make up my mind if this doctor has a great sense of humour or is plain insolent.... OK, Lala – here is what I would recommend. See your GP and ask him or her to do a full thyroid test. Just because your test was "normal" 7 years ago does not mean that is still is "normal". By the time a TFT comes back with all parameters in the red, about 75% of the thyroid function has already been destroyed. Ask him or her to do a TSH and FT4 as well as Thyroid antibodies TPO and TgAB. Ideally you'd need an FT3 as well, but there is little chance you'd get that at this stage. If your GP flatly refuses, then it might be an idea to do the test privately with Genova. It'll set you back £74.25, and there is no guarantee that any NHS doctor will recognize a private test as "valid" (it's not NSH approved, you see) but it would give you a chance.... and at least YOU would know what's going on and you can then consider your options. (you will find info about the Genova private test in our files) – please click thyroid treatment/files/DISCOUNTS%20ON%20SUPPLEMENTS%20and%20TESTS/ Also – start measuring and logging your basal temperature for a week – first thing in the mornings and last thing at night. Permanent subnormal temperatures (below 36.5 C) are indicative of Hypothyroidism. Order Dr. Peatfield's book "Your thyroid and how to keep it healthy" and read it from cover to cover.... he explains all things thyroid beautifully and easily understandable for us lay-people. Always ask your doctor for copies of any lab results, which must include the ref ranges. When you have the figures, please post them on here with the ref ranges. - If you decided to do a blood test with Genova, the results will be send or emailed straight to you – please let us know then what the figures say. Please note that for a private blood test you will be sent a complete kit, but you'd still need somebody to draw the blood. Any qualified nurse could do it, or for a small fee your local hospital will oblige. I hope this helps to get you started.... With best wishes,
Guest guest
Reference the sex drive, I had as many of the blood tests for vitamins as my doc would do and the most obvious 'normal' one was the B12 which according to everyone on here was actually very low (250 in a range of 200 to 900). For optimum health it should be right at the top of the range ie. 800+. I have been supplementing with a range of vitamins ( Vit C, D3, Multi vit, iodine, and a B complex with 48,000% B12 in it) and am now feeling a hundred times better AND my sex drive is back. I did miss my sex drive. I could and did 'lie back and think of England' and once 'on the job' did enjoy it. But when I was low/depleted, if I had a choice between a cup of tea and sex, I chose a cup of tea. This more than anything can be the straw that breaks a camels back in a marriage. A husband/wife can put up with an illness, but when refused a chance of de-stressing through the intimate act of sex, it just makes them wonder why they are around. Thankfully it hasn't happened to me, but I can see it happening all around. 2 > > I have found in the past that GPs are not very sympathetic, one (female Dr.) told me re: my sex drive to 'lie back and think of England' > > I feel like I'm getting nowhere, I'm glad I came across this site >
