Guest guest
I have always been thin, but since cutting out refined sugar and cutting down yeast/bread I've lost even more weight (battling candida and winning!) Can anyone suggest ways for me to put weight on? I do try and eat healthy fats, but I seem to be running out of ideas for healthy ways to put the weight on. I have osteoporosis so need to try and be heavier! Thanks, Lynne
Guest guest
Are your adrenals OK? Sometimes people who are hypothyroid remain slim because their adrenals are out of whack. Do you have a good appetite and eat 3 meals a day and 2 snacks? I put on weight when on a very low carb diet - about a stone in a year - so it is possible. (I didn't want to put on weight either!) Guest guest
Being underweight is a risk factor for osteoporosis, but all the websites I have seen which discuss it assume those slim people have done crash dieting or had some kind of eating disorder, resulting in malnutrition. Maybe if you had a malabsorption disorder, such as coeliac, that would apply too. That doesn't mean if you are naturally slim you will get osteoporosis. After all the average woman was a size 10 in the 1920s, but nowadays they are about a size 16. Putting on some extra fat won't necessarily protect you from osteoporosis. http://ehealthmd.com/content/are-you-risk-developing-osteoporosis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underweight Miriam > Hi, could i ask why do you need to put weight on when you have osteoporosis,i have Osteopenia ( which is the stage before osteoporosis) i am also very slim ,everyone assumes i have an overactive thyroid ,if i just say i have thyroid problems.I did put on about one and a half stone to start with but have lost a lot of it,i had a trial on T3 and the weight just dropped off me .I have bone density scans and no one has said anything at the clinic about needing to put weight on. Guest guest
Thanks for the replies. I do have a good appetite and eat well. My adrenals weren't great, but I've been taking 4-6 Nutri Adrenal Extra a day for the past year (under the advice of Dr P). It could be that my adrendals are still not brilliant, and will be getting re-tested soon. I already have a diagnosis of osteoporosis (no fractures to date - touch wood) but was lead to believe by the hospital that if I was heavier it would be more weight-bearing and better for the bones. I am definitely underweight. Lynne > > I have always been thin, but since cutting out refined sugar and cutting down yeast/bread I've lost even more weight (battling candida and winning!) Guest guest
I suppose that makes some kind of sense. I had read that weight bearing exercise could strengthen the bones. Presumably your vitamin D levels and calcium have been checked? Is magnesium also OK? It's difficult to suggest how you could put on weight if you have to be careful not to encourage candida at the moment. My brother is underweight and he has to take Creon capsules (digestive enzymes).
