Guest guest
I have just started on NDT and having read the files I need a bit of clarification about the calcium and iron avoidance. I can take my iron in the evening which will avoid the NDT, but will the amount of iron in my multi vitamin be detrimental? I don't want to take the multi vitamin in the evening as it has vitamin D in it, which keeps me awake half the night if taken late. Concerning the Calcium, can I have milk in my tea or with my cornflakes in the morning any more? Or is the prohibition more to do with supplemental quantities of calcium? Thanks
Guest guest
This warning about iron and calcium means not to take your iron or calcium at the same time as the thyroid medication because they can block its absorption. So if you take them several hours away from it there won't be a problem. How many hours exactly is that please someone? So, concerning the cornflakes with milk, thyroid medication should be taken an hour before food or a couple of hours after it (ie on an empty stomach). So it won't matter what you eat for breakfast, from that point of view. I now buy a multivitamin/mineral without any iron (BioCare Adult Multivitamins & Minerals). I expect there are other good brands. It would simplify your planning! Guest guest
Not that I know of, but we are all different. I am constantly amazed at the strong reactions some people have to supplements, my experience of things being somewhat opposite. Miriam > Hi, I picked up on this comment from . Guest guest
Its the 'sunshine' vitamin. It gives you 'bounce' through the day. It keeps me awake for hours if I take it at night, especially as I take 5000mcg of it, plus whats in the multi vit. Guest guest
Do you really need to take such a lot of it? I take 1000mcg in the winter and blood tests have always shown a good level. If you boosted your vitamin D levels with sunshine it wouldn't prevent you sleeping at night, so something odd is going on here. Miriam > Its the 'sunshine' vitamin. Guest guest
I suffer from SAD in the winter. This is the first winter when I haven't crawled into my cave for 4 months. I still have other problems, but the pervasive winter blues have been absent. If I could get my docs to do the teats I would be able to tell you if my vitamin D levels are O.K. but they won't do them. I can't even get them to do another B12 because I have had one in the last 12 months. Even getting the TSH done again this year is going to be a very big struggle. 2 > > Its the 'sunshine' vitamin. Guest guest
Well I'm glad to hear you have got through the last winter better. It does seem very variable across the UK what GPs are prepared to test for. Miriam > I suffer from SAD in the winter. This is the first winter when I haven't crawled into my cave for 4 months.
