Guest guest
Hi Kath What comments has your doctor made regarding these results - I sincerely hope he hasn't told you that they are 'normal' and you have nothing to worry about. Actually, you do, and you need to get your doctor to take some action. I have removed the results that appear to be OK and left the one's that are not with my comments. Irritatingly, I've just realised that the TS3 and TPO haven't been done despite being told the tests included them. I would press for these, especially if there are members of your family who have a thyroid or an autoimmune disease. The doctor can write a note with the blood request form to tell the lab. technician that he specifically needs these results. Cortisol 280 mmol/L No range given - no bood without a range, but I think this might be too low. Haemoglobin 11.7 g/dl Range 11.5-16.5 - right at the bottom of the range and needs supplementing. Haematocrit 0.363 l/l 0.37-5.5 - too low MCH 25.9 pg 27-32 - below the bottom of the range. Ferritin 12 ng/mL 13-150 - this is serious. Your ferritin level should be around 70 to 90 in that reference range. You are probably in need of iron infusion through injections. If this is refused, you need some other form of elemental iron such as Ferrous Glutamate 200mgs 3 times daily with food and with high doses of vitamin C 3/4000mgs. Eat foods very high in iron too. ~Type in 'foods high in iron' into Google to get a list. MCV 80.5 fl 80-100 - Again, right at the bottom Vit B12 794 This is expected as I am already on cytocobalmine injections. If anything, I think this quite low considering I am on the injections and had one only a few weeks ago. I expected it to be closer to 1000. It's not low, it's OK. The top of the reference range for B12 is usually around 750 to 900 but you can 'keep the level topped up' by taking 1000mcgs sublingual B12 (Solgar brand is excellent) Folate 5.4 ng/mL 4.6-18.7 - You need to get Folic Acid from your health food store or local pharmacy. You need 800mgs daily. This result is very, very low. Magnesium 0.92 mmol/L 0.7-1 - you can boost your magnesium level by taking 500mgs Magnesium Citrate daily. Don't let your GP get away with doing nothing Kath - you obviously have a quite serious problem going on that will eventually lead you to becoming anaemic. He needs to put a stop to this happening. Guest guest
Thank you Sheila, I'm actually very shocked at how iron deficient I am; I had no idea at all. I can see that iron deficiency is linked to thyroid problems. However, I've also found it's linked to PPIs. I have been taking a high dose for some years now after gastric surgery, yet not one of the GPs I've seen over the last 6 months trying to sort this out has even mentioned this as a possible cause for why I might be feeling so unwell. My bloods have never been checked until now at my insistence. I'm feeling very angry and upset about this particularly as I'm now significantly iron deficient and feeling ill as a result. I haven't discussed my blood results with the GP I intend to see yet; partly because she's not available and partly because I'm also waiting on some x-ray results and I might as well do it all at once. I will mention the TPO and free T3 again and get them done. My worry isn't that the iron deficiency issue will be ignored, more that my concerns about my thyroid function will be dismissed because the iron deficiency 'must' be the root of it all. My own feeling is that I've had a borderline underactive thyroid for many years and now the PPIs have pushed me over into a truly underactive thyroid by causing the iron deficiency. It's been very insidious and my thyroid function tests have always been within normal range which has prevented me from being taken seriously. I'm not certain of the cortisol range. I had a look on the net which states that for cortisol levels taken around 9am, which mine was, a normal range is 140-700 nmol/L but I don't know if this is correct for this test so I will have to ask. Many thanks for your help and advice, Kath > > Hi Kath > > What comments has your doctor made regarding these results - I sincerely > hope he hasn't told you that they are 'normal' and you have nothing to worry > about.
