I rang Goldshield/Forley (they're the same company) and they assured me that

their levothyroxine is gluten-free. I assume it's just a response to the

thyroxine itself, then.

I also read somewhere that this is the exact same product as the Synthroid brand

in the States, but I can't vouch for that.

You could be intolerant to one of the fillers in levothyroxine.

The one most people have problems with is Lactose. Your doctor can prescribe

the Pure Thyroxine manufactured by dale's Pharmaceutical Company.

I seem to be getting a hollow, uncomfortable

feeling in my stomach after I take my levothyroxine. I've heard that some

brands contain gluten, so I ought to look into this. My brand is Forley

Generics. Anyone else experienced this?

Hmm - I don't know of any problem with lactose. I drink lots of milk without any

ill effects. I actually swapped to oat milk at one point, as I thought it might

be healthier - but it gave me terrible wind! So I went back to (skimmed) milk.

In all the exclusion diets I've done in the past, milk has never come up as a

villain.

Hi Helen,

It could be that you don’t have enough adrenal

function to support the thyroid meds - this can cause a weird sensation in the

abdomen area.

Try drinking some fresh lemon juice in a glass of

water but NOT on an empty stomach and rinse your mouth out afterwards to save

the dentine on your teeth from being destroyed. Also you might need magnesium

to calm and support the adrenals.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Thanks Mandy. I do take magnesium, last thing at night. But at the moment I'm

taking the levo first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. Should I take

it with some food, maybe?

Hi Helen,

No don’t think you should because it should

really be taken an hour before food for absorption issues. Exactly how does

the discomfort present itself. If it is a churning type of feeling or a windy

tummy then it could just be the thyroid meds speeding up the metabolism and

actually putting right issues that may have been going on for a long time. The

gut could actually be expanding as the metabolism speeds up. Like an inner

tube if you know what I mean.

Can you let me us know

Best wishes

Mandy

A couple of studies have been done to show that people feel

better taking their levothyroxine when they go to bed. It is more readily

absorbed and people find they sleep better and wake refreshed and feel

generally better throughout the day. Try the experiment Helen and see if this

helps. Never take levothyroxine with food, it should be taken on an empty

stomach. If you are taking any form of iron or calcium, this too should be

taken at least 4 hours away from thyroid hormone as thyroxine binds to these.

Thanks for the info. Tricky isn't it? I take iron (spatone) after my dinner, and

we eat dinner very late in this house, so that would be a problem if I took the

levo at bedtime. I guess it's one more reason to try eating dinner earlier!

I didn't have any trouble this morning when I took the levo, so maybe my stomach

is acclimatising to it.

When I was getting it, it wasn't a windy, bloating response - it was like that

dull ache you get when you're really hungry.
