Guest guest
But I have to ask - why would kelp tablets plus selenium not be able to replace natural thyroid meds? Hi, .... because kelp (or rather iodine) is only a building block for making the thyroid hormone T4; it is not a thyroid hormone in itself. It needs a fully functioning thyroid gland to extract the iodine and to convert part of it into T4. Btw- not very much of the iodine in kelp tablets or even iodine in pure form is used by the body to make T4 ... iodine is needed for many other functions in the body – to protect against breast cancer and ovarian cancer for instance. Selenium is not a thyroid hormone either, and iodine + selenium does not equal thyroid hormone. Selenium helps the body to utilize thyroid hormone, but it is no substitute for it. Natural (desiccated) thyroid on the other hand is thyroid hormone. The tablets are, in effect, dried and pulverized thyroid glands from pigs. Pigs thyroid glands are almost identical to human thyroid glands and the natural hormones are bio-identical, which is why NDT is an ideal substitute.
