Quite a few of us on here use the betaine HCl method I believe - I'm one of

them. My nutritionist diagnosed low stomach acid, after I'd previously been on

omeprazole for gastritis and I've had reflux for a few years now.

I am finding that the longer I'm on HCl the better my stomach can deal with food

without it - I've actually been off it a few weeks now (ran out and can't afford

to replace just now), and I'm only just starting to have trouble again. So it

does work, but it does take time.

I get on best with the Holland & Barrett one - I find that easiest to dose with

(for me, it's usually 2 tablets a meal, unless it's got red meat in then I have

3).

I had a look in Dr 's book, " Why stomach acid is good for you " , but he

doesn't seem to say anything about the transition from proton pump inhibitors to

treatment with betaine hydrochloride.

I imagine you might feel uncomfortable for a short time because until your acid

levels are high enough you might get some acid reflux. When I started taking

Betaine HCl that happened to me for a few days until I had built up my dosage

sufficiently to make the valve at the top of the stomach start closing normally.

Here's a page about hypochlorhydria from Dr Myhill's website:

> Has anyone on here actually changed from taking PPI's and taken Dr Myhills

approach as I would very much like to know what happened and how you did it and

whether it worked? I would love to get off my PPI (Nexium) It has changed the

surface of my stomach, evidently this is common. (I've seen it on the screen,

looks like the surface of the moon as they cause tumours that sometimes have to

be zapped). This can't be good for you!

Actually Miriam it was a good thing that you posted the link because I have an appontment with my Gastroenterologist soon (keeping an eye on the Lunar Landscape!) and that has saved me looking for the page which I have printed off and am going to send to my consultant so that I can discuss it with him at my appointment. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say.

In the olden days doctors used to know about this stuff and hypochlorhydria was

a very common diagnosis in the 1950s, for example. However, so far as I and my

brother have been able to find out, betaine hydrochloride is not available on

prescription. (It cost me a lot of money to take 5 capsules 3 times a day for

11 months until my own stomach acid production became normal again.)

Please keep us posted about how you get on with the consultant. I hope it goes

well.
