Guest guest
That's terrible!!! If you have to go back ask for a different one to draw. I hate blood tests too... They always draw mine from the hand now as my veins are so small and they roll they said. {{{{ Gentle Hugs )))) Helen In a message dated 3/26/2001 11:49:53 PM Eastern Standard Time, belowskinbeauty@... writes: I know that a blood test should not be a big deal but today it was. Guest guest
Lee, I don't have veins in my arms, so the lab tech's taught me a little trick...I drink lots of water before I have my labs drawn. Fluids plump up the veins is what I am told. *gentle hugs* Chelle
Guest guest
Lee, Its actually dangerous to have a blood pressure thing used to pump up a vein. Please dont let them do that to you again ok? Speaking as someone who gets jabbed every six weeks and has had blood taken from fingers, feet, just about everywhere - I'm an expert on this topic lol. I hate them too! Best thing to do, is to have a hot shower (if you can) about 15 mins before you plan on having the test, then move your arms around alot (I clean up a desk or something) where you are putting things away so your arms move lots. This gets your veins pumping. And of course, drink drink drink drink water!!! Lots of it - litres of the damn stuff. And yes a blood test can leave you feeling like you've been hit by a freight train. I usually have to eat straight after as it affects my sugar levels. Then I have to rest or I get a migraine. And never do physically straining activities after you've had it drawn. Getting blood from us deep veined people is an event, but once you know the precautions and preperations its not so bad. Also work out which collector is good and make sure you only see that person. Phone in advance to see if they are available. Thats what I do. Makes it so much easier. All that for a blood test, but trust me, its worth it. Hope your results were ok? Love Aisha.
Guest guest
Thanks so much for all of your advice. I am going to go to the hospital next time I need a blood test; they have no problem with my veins. Unfortunately I'm still anemic. The doc said that I had no iron stores to begin with and they are just starting to build up. He wants me to take MORE iron and then have it tested in a few months. Once the anemia is over, he wants me to take iron for 6 additional months to build up a reserve. I also have to do some other icky tests (that we won't name), to make sure that it is a "simple" iron deficiency anemia. Guest guest
I was anaemic and it took two years of taking iron to replace it. Takes ages for iron to store. Did they check for inflammation markers also? I ask as inflammation can cause the iron not to bind correctly to the cells which cause you to become anaemic. Just checking. Also if you can take it, Vitamin C helps absorb iron better also. Is everything ok in that blood work? Now I'm worried! Love Aisha. > > > Thanks so much for all of your advice. Guest guest
Hi My son had his blood taken only a month ago - I was dreading it. But it went amzingly well - I didn't bother with the numbing cream as I knew the thing that Luke wouldn't like is being held. Also wasn't keen to put cream on him. The 2 nurses who took the blood were excellent - he sat on my knee and I held him firmly while the nurses took the blood. My Dad fed Luke gfcf chocolate to distract him. It worked a treat - Luke was so excited to have chocolate that he didn't fuss at all - just kept saying more chocolate!!! Good luck. Nicola Blood Test Am due to see Dr H in Sept and am dreading the blood test (J hasn't had one before). Any comments/advice/suggestions appreciated. Guest guest
Thanks to all that responded to this. Just had visions of having to sit astride whilst shocked drs and nurses looked on. In fact, I have no idea how she will react but I do feel better having heard of others experiences (knowing that I may not be the only parent to have held their child in a half nelson " for their own good " makes me feel a little better!!) Guest guest
I found emla cream best on inside of elbows..do both sides in case one draw fails. Blood flows better from these points. and if you need the amount we did for all these tests you are more likely to get it in one go. I found best position was to sit child facing you on your knee. And hold tight in a bear hug / cuddle. Cheek to cheek to stop them turning their head to see whats going on. They cannot kick anyone then and wont get away as long as you hold on ! You need 1 person ( nurse) to hold arm straight and another one to take blood. Drink water the night before to make blood flow better less sticky. Practise position several times in advance. And remember you need this blood and you dont want to have to come back ..so hold tight..and no matter how much they cry it will be over within minutes. Good luck.! Guest guest
Hello Jeff, Jon here. the CMV test is for a virus that can be passed from your donor to you. It is a virus that is related to mono. As we are imunosupressed, it can cause a dangerous infection. I had it for about 6 months. I had to have a pic line and I did IV antibiotics for about 5 months. Most people carry the virus, but immune systems control it in healthy people. Guest guest
Hi Jeff CMV is Cytomegalovirus, a member of the herpes virus family and like Jon said many have it, it is very common in immunosupresst people, and HCV infected persons. They routinely test us for it. It is spread by body fluids and many mothers pass it on to their children. Doesn't make most people Ill and there isn't any vaccine or good treatment for it.
