Guest guest
Hi everyone, I have been hypothyroid for a year now, and am on a programme with Dr.P.I have been massively depressed and in a black place for a long time, I hardly ever go out now, and never alone, I just want to get back to my comfort zone, my bedroom, but recently even when I am out I get butterflies, just the very thought of going out terrifies me. I fear I am becoming agrophobic, and wondering if this is part of the thyroid problem, or is it something else entirely.Any feedback appreciated.. ann x
Guest guest
Dear Ann, I think that definitely goes along with depression and when the depression lifts so will the resistance to going out. I get the same way when I am depressed and even on the ok days it can be hard to go out. It just seems to be one of the many symptoms. Also, if you are an introvert anyway, as I am, I think it makes it that much harder. I think the stimuli outside can be overwhelming when you are depressed and feel weak. Therapy can definitely help to get through the depression and low self esteem, though it can take some time and trial and error to find a good therapist. There is no way around the fact that having a physical illness and depression is really really difficult and devastating. And sometimes you really can not do anything. However I have found it helpful to push myself when I am feeling okay and do things that are good for my mind and body, whether I feel like it or not. It helps to break the depressive cycle. However even when I push myself sometimes I can't handle it and have to retreat and that's ok. It's only my opinion but I wouldn't worry about agoraphobia any more than you worry about sleeping too long. It's all one in the same. Just focus on being good and kind to yourself and your body and support yourself however you can you through this difficult time. Once your depression lifts, I'm sure you will have an easier time going out. All the best..
