Hi Helen,

I'm Type 1 (since 1980) and have been having trouble lately with control. The

colitis

is in control (I take Asacol). And my emotional problems have become much less

since

I went on Zoloft (only 25 mg). It's been 2 years since my worst emotional event

and

I lost 20 lbs. I'm finally gaining weight ... but was in bed so long that I now

have

trouble walking. I hope that improves.

I'm optimistic about the future and am so happy that I found this list!

My life is an open book. I'm now 40. When I was younger I wouldn't have shared

anything

with anyone.

Hi Melinda,

I'm happy to report that I have not had any diabetic complications - -

but wonder if there might be a connection between diabetes and emotional

problems.

Hmm well do you have an eating problem? are you over weight? i know

depression and stuff like that can make you eat and eat and eat.... And of

course that cant be good. I have a strong family history of diabetes too.

SO i was bound to get it eventually. they just didnt expect it at age 21.

Melinda,

No I don't have a weight problem or an eating problem. It is still a

mystery why diabetes came my way.

Hi ,

Thats interesting. I wonder if they ever did a study on emotional problems

and diabetes.... Diabetes is a weird thing. I know people who are under

weight who have gotten it. It sure doesnt make much sense to me. But either

way having diabetes really stinks. I take insulin and im on oral meds.

Check my sugar at least 2 times a day. Its not TOTALLY awful. But it stinks

to not beable to eat a HUGE sundae from friendlys :)

Diabetes isn't something you just GET, or come down with like the flu or something. Diabetes doesn't discriminate, against age, sex, weight, or anything like that. It does come with a variety of symptoms, and side effects: depresion, fatigue, nausea, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, etc. Anyway's that's my little tidbit on diabetes.

I have a question about this, but don't want to start any trouble, yet cannot seem to just let it slip. Should I say anything other than this, or ?

Hi,

I'm Fran and I have a son with Down syndrome, (now 6 1/2) who we

adopted six years ago from Venezuela! He is a joy and a challenge every

day!! Gabe does not have the instability in his neck but does have an

unusual defect in his second vertebrae. He is actually missing part of

it...the ring is not completely closed. This makes things " unstable " . It

just so happens that he was born that way and we would never have known if

they had not screened him for the other DS-type instability :-) He has all

the same limitations that your son probably has, but we don't seem to be able

to stop him from climbing on the outside of all the jungle gym equipment he

can find!

I'd love to hear more about your son and your adoption story :-) Do you have

any other adopted children? We have a second son, Ethan who is turning two

next week. And three birth daughters ranging in age from 14 - 10 years :-)

Kinda a hectic house around here! Hope to hear more from you...

Fran

Anne,

Our girls are all adopted. We didn't go looking for babies

with DS, the Lord just blessed us with them. We had started out to adopt

anybody, waited a few years and then Heidi came along. I knew from the first

phone call (when the caseworker asked us if we were interested) that she was

OUR baby! We got her @ 10 wks. of age & Caleb was born 7 months later. When

Cal was 9 1/2 months old we got another phone call.

Corrie was supposed to be adopted privately but when the family learned

she had DS they didn't want her. Our caseworker called to ask if we knew

anybody who wanted to adopt a little girl with DS & we said " How about us? " .

She arrived 4 days later at a whopping 5 lbs! Whew!

The next ten years is a blur of activity! We also had, during this time,

two foster kids with special needs, and adopted Mae from Taiwan. That

was a two year battle with the U.S. gov't to get her here. She's been with

us two years the first of August.

None of our girls have instability of the antloaxial joint. They were each

x-rayed around the age of 3. Heidi is due for another x-ray to check for it next

year at age 12.

Burghardt

Mom to Heidi 10 DS, Caleb 10 NDA,

Corrie 9 DS and Mae 5 DS
