Guest guest
The ribs attach to the thoracic vertebrae. Each of the 12 thoracic vertebrae has a pair of adjoining ribs. And, along with the breast bone, forms the bony thorax - your chest. The cervical vertebrae are your neck bones. It would be unusual to have ribs adjoining the cervical vertebrae. They would be additional to the usual number and not in the usual position (ie attaching to the thoracic vertebrae). Perhaps " cervical rib " is in reference to something that is unusual regarding the structure of your cervical vertebrae? Lynne
Guest guest
Hi The cervical ribs are indeed attached to the cervical vertebrae, usually the 7th vertebra(the one at the base of the neck and just before the thoracic vertebrae) They are not common but do occur, most people do not realise they are there, only when they cause problems such as nerve impingment or pain are they x-rayed and found. I'm not sure anything is actually done about them....bit like having an extra finger/toe I guess. Hope that helps. Guest guest
HI LYNNE This reporting came from Charing Cross in 1973 and there is more detail on it than you get today, but what I do not understand is why put down that I have no cervical ribs when one should not have them anyway. Is it possible that having these ribs might have caused a problem in the lungs and that they are just ruling it out. The rest of the reporting on the cervical spine was not too good. When I read this report to my last GP he said GOSH things will have got a lot worse. I was only 29 then and my neck was getting old in keeping with Hypothyroidism. If other thyroid patients suffer pain in their neck its no surprise. The neck also has the Thyroid Gland. I did complain of pain in the neck as a child to my Mother, and all I got was " you have been sitting in a draft " My former GP did say once when I stopped taking T4 that I would get old, and my response was that I already feel old. It also shows the importance of early treatment. Kathleen > > The ribs attach to the thoracic vertebrae. Each of the 12 thoracic > vertebrae has a pair of adjoining ribs. Guest guest
HI TAMMY, That helps as they were ruling out what the cause of pain in the neck was. From what you say they can cause pain in the neck. Charing Cross's reporting was indeed far better that my local hospital. I take their word on the kidney as well. Many thanks.
