Guest guest
Hi I have posted on here before with my test results and have always been given excellent advice and I so appreciate the time you take to answer. I have today seen an endo for the first time and I didn't really know what to expect,,, she was a lovely lady who I felt listened to what I had to say,,,, she said that because of my tsh results and symptons she would start me on carbimazole 30mg daily for 4 weeks and then reducing to 20mg. Is there anybody else taking carbimazole,,, I have been reading about the side effects and I am getting a bit worried,,, also someone told me that you can become quite hyper while on carbimazole,, any advice or help would be appreciated. Thank you
Guest guest
Hi Please tell me your doctor has tested all your TFTs before starting you on carbimazole and has clinched a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism? Has she tested your antibodies, and do you have Graves or Hashis? What were your T3 and T4 levels? 30mg is quite a hefty dose. That said, hyperthyroidism is very serious and you must take the medication to bring it under control. The side effects of carbimazole are honestly a teddy bear's picnic compared to the effects of untreated Graves disease / hyper! If you do have Graves, then there is a slim chance of remission but most patients choose either surgery or radioactive iodine treatment eventually, although the thyroid must be brought under control first. There is an excellent forum in the States - the National Graves Disease and Thyroid Foundation - dealing mainly with Graves and Hyper issues. They will help you. Yes I've taken Carbimazole - it is designed to shut down your thyroid, not send you hyper. You can get hypo. However, if you have Hashimotos disease or hashitoxicosis you can swing hyper, even on CBZ - this is why an accurate diagnosis is important. I really strongly advise that you start learning about your illness, learn your symptoms inside out (I pretty much can guess my blood results accurately these days, I know my body very well) get copies of all your results, and start asking very detailed questions of your doctor. I would be very concerned if a doctor was prescribing carbimazole on a TSH test alone, and in all likelihood she hasn't, as TSH is often suppressed in autoimmune thyroid issues and isn't reliable on its own. I hope that helps rather than scares you. Try the www.ngdf.org forum. Best wishes she said that because of my tsh results and symptons she would start me on carbimazole 30mg daily for 4 weeks and then reducing to 20mg.
