Dear ,

I not only got your message, I'm also receiving a lot of other notes

from people saying they can't send (or is it receive?) messages through

mail. I don't know what is up, but I don't really use for my e-mail

and I don't seem to have a problem.

However, I did log on to last night and it looks like every single

message I've sent and received (well over 5,000 by now for the 2 groups)

is still sitting there waiting for me! It's just too hard to read everything

in my regular mail box, but to read it again on is going to be impossible!

Oh, well, what's a sick guy to do? Gotta find the time.

I love you all.

Hugs,

The only testing I've had problems with over the years is the IQ testing.

Most IQ tests are structured on giving increasingly difficult material, in a

predescribed order, until the child fails.

These are the problems I have with that approach

1) It sets the child up for failure and frustration

2) will quickly shut down if she thinks she is being tested rather

than taught

3) her learning is often non-linear. SHe'll pick up more advanced concepts

and miss " easier " concepts. I see many of her issues as more of an LD than a

MR problem.... but I can't ever convince the school psychologists of that!

4) Most school psychologists I've met are on a power trip! They tend to

insist on test formats that are based on 's weaknesses (like language

processing). I've had several nasty fights over the test format.

5) When the test results are inaccurate, then the school expectations are

diminished. At this point the school has decided she can't learn to read

based on the IQ tests putting her still at a Kindergarten level. (She's is

going into 5th grade). Which is nuts.

We approached Janet's education with a different attitude toward

testing. We allowed it to be done. The testing (varied which tests

were used from year to year) gave a reasonably consistent answer and

confirmation that Janet was not falling back. This was particularly

good when in mid-teens they said to expect the test results to drop

because people with down syndrome plateau, rather than continuing

learning. Jan is still learning at 29, but things like math skills take

constant use to maintain or improvement.

Our educational aims for Janet have always been simple. We want her to

keep learning from where she is today. We also want her to keep being

challenged to both learn and use what she knows, so that she won't lose

what skills she has. I guess it is no different at 29 than it was at

9. Jan has things she's working on, some of them toward new achievement

and some in maintenance mode.

I understand that testing is bad if they use it to prove that they

shouldn't educate. We never had that problem since our view was that

education and expectations weren't based upon tests, but on improving

from her current-state capabilities which are not what the tests

measure.

I've got this really conservative doctor who is a good neuro but is only

treating me because a friend has Lyme and he consults with Burrascano, so he is

treating me.

What you say is interesting, and I'm a serious researcher. Can you give me any

leads to track this down? A doctor? So, are you saying there are seven of

you, 4 Lyme positive with bad tests from Igenex but some different ones from

Focus. Who are they? Are you associated with them in any way? Where did you

get your Hokama stats? How do you know that this cigua like toxin attacks the

liver, other organs and CNS? Which researchers?

Our second child (of 5) had DS and died just before his 4th birthday. We

decided to have another child after his death, but had three miscarriages in

a row, so we had ourselves tested. Our karyotypes were normal. The

miscarriages were probably due to a hormonal problem, which was easily

corrected, and we went on to have healthy child no. 4. On the other hand,

child no. 5 (aka Mr. Surprise) also has DS, although it is probably related

to " advanced parental age. "

Hey! I just wanted to know if any of you had ever had testing done on

yourselves. I've just experienced my second miscarriage in 3 mths. We're

having a karyotype etc done tomorrow. I pray there isnt a link. Sydnie is

almost 3 and want so much for her to have a brother/sister. My dr said he

felt in his gut there wasnt anything wrong with either one of us but wants

to make sure. Any suggestions?

What else besides a karyotype? My in-expert opinion is that unless

Sydnie has translocation DS you aren't going to find anything wrong

with either you or your DH chromsomally. Anyway, I've had a total of 7

miscarriages and after m/c #4 we had a full work, so email me with any

questions. I do wonder if I (we) have sticky chromsomes or some such

thing given our history.

Yes, I have been tested. We do have the translocation type and I am a

carrier. I had 3 miscarriages in 2 years before but no testing was

done then. About 5% of DS in translocation and only 1% is hereditary. I

also have an older daughter and she is not even a carrier. However there are

and have been quite a few children with DS in my family. I have taught this

to medical students (and a few doctors) so if I can help just ask.

I am not familiar with this test. You need to find out if the test can be

administered as frequently as you wish to monitor, whether it be yearly or more

often. Many standardized tests can not be done more than once every 12 months

or the results are considered invalid.

In Texas I have found that most schools use the Brigance to measure progress,

and frequent testing doesn't affect reliability or validity on testing results.

The only problem I have run into is when they release a new version -- you can't

compare the results of one version to another. You can resolve this by having

the school continue to use the same version, but somewhere down the line you

will have to switch over to the latest test.

The Brigance covers a broad span of grade/age levels. And you should be able to

use the results (weaknesses) to write your child's IEPs.
