Guest guest
Just heard her acceptance speech. Sounds like a regular mom! Very accomplished and well-rounded. Love her story...parent and coach, gets involved in PTA, then becomes councilman then Mayor...and then on an energy committee and then Governor! Actually reminds me of Ben Kingsley's character in the movie Dave!!!! In a message dated 8/29/2008 12:03:18 P.M. Guest guest
Interesting to note (if it's important to you), that she knew DURING her pregnancy that she was carrying a special needs child. --------- VP Did everyone just read that McCain picked a woman as a VP candidate? Guest guest
there is of course positive...Alaska is listed very high in the State of the States Research. That is a good thing. In my own little world, everyone who has a child with Down Syndrome dosen't agree with my philosophies. I am all about community based quality of life have something going all day for my son.... not everyone thinks that way of course, some people have different needs. I am really not sure this governor would be the panecea we would hope. I just know how challenging it can be for us to convince a small township supervisor or mid sized mayor of our needs...so it is with caution I am looking at this woman . Good luck to all of us it is going to be an interesting time in our lives. Cindi

Guest guest
Anti abortion is basically a Republican position (at least for the far right). I don't believe the legality of abortion would be in jeopardy if she became VP. Guest guest
I also consider myself independent but I totally fear McCain and feel his selection is just about trying to get voters. If our fed dollars are all spent on defense, tax cuts for the wealthy and the like I see little benefit for people with disabilities. I believe she is just window dressing. Guest guest
Thanks for the reminder. It is certainly fine to have opinions about candidates...we all do... but I think IPADDU members will be best served if our comments are non-partisan and informative rather than argumentative and opinionated. I know I really appreciate hearing what information others have gathered about the candidates so I can make a really good informed decision. What I am going to try to do better in the coming days is to cite my sources of information... So far, everyone has been very appropriate and diplomatic, which is great. Guest guest
The media does a very poor job of bringing us real news about the candidates and the conventions. We listen to hours of them asking stupid questions and counting how many pronouns someone used in a speech but we hear very little about positions, past voting, any of the important stuff. People are makig their decisions on sound bites and whether that person would be fun to drink a beer with. It is just scary. Thanks for that info. Guest guest
Hi Pat and Kate: Both well stated comments and both bring us back to issues regarding disabilities...thank you. I would like to keep our political discussion specific to the issues around our adult loved ones who have disabilities. Pat and Kate and others have managed to do that way better than I... Also, I suggest we include websites and sources of information around the topic of politics and disabilities on IPADDU that would help focus the discussion on facts or at least publicly available information as opposed to our opinions. I think this would be the most constructive and instructive means of educating us all on the candidates and their positions on adults with disabilities. Thanks! Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... I am amazed that parents in our group would worry about a potential President who wants to improve funding for social outreach -- aren't our children some of the ones who need that the most?? Read what Obama says about special needs funding, and how in his statements about autism in particular he is right on target with specific data. (See the Autism Speaks website.) McCain's statement to the ASA was short, vague, and non-committal. And anyone who thinks improved healthcare is going to cost more than this President has spent on the Iraq War is mistaken. The Republican party has squandered trillions and destroyed our reputation around the world. Guest guest
Keeping comments in line with how our loved ones with disabilities need housing and compassionate care, how can we possibly accept what the current IL govenor and senators have done (or not done) to ensure proper funding for programs we need for our adult children. Our ranking of 51st in the nationb on spending for smaller care homes, specifically....Time to think outside of the box, but I'm not sure who will lead us to do this in a fiscally responsible way.
