Transitioning

All,

's post reminded me of a question I got recently regarding school districts

sometimes encouraging or steering families toward looking at agency sheltered

workshops either for the entirety of transition or nearer the end of services.

The idea, I think, was that if a person did not have realistic means of either

getting or maintaining competitive employment by the age of 18 or 22 (or

anywhere in between) that some districts would then set up arrangements with

local agency providers of sheltered or day programs.

Reason I bring this up is because I'm also aware, since the Adult Waiver

rewrites, that whatever the old funding stream used to be that gave recent high

school/transition graduates 'priority' for funding in day programs....has been

now lumped into the general Adult Waiver, and that this priority status for

newly or approaching-graduates is gone.

My questions: Is this accurate? And if so, unless a student already has

Medicaid Waiver funding as a child, and would perhaps quite 'seamlessly' be

approved for adult day funding upon adulthood....how realistic is it that

students will be approved day program funding in time to access day programs

immediately after aging out of high school or transition services?

Has anyone from this group gotten notification that you're approved for Adult

Waiver/day program funding, and you were NOT previously in the children's

waiver?

Just curious. I wasn't sure how to answer this question from another parent

recently.

Thanks,

Laurie

Re: about group homes

Nora,

As part of high school transitioning, I have been touring group homes (it

currently is not needed). It's the 'norm' that 'adults' share a room (which is

what I hate). The government doesn't force other individuals that require

housing to 'share a room' (except convicted felons, but our loved ones are not

convicted felons), so why should those with disabilities be 'forced'.

Yoda84@... wrote: I think I asked this question before but am going to

post on a popular blog

about housing issues and need more info. I am looking for info on group homes

in IL. Two of my three brothers live in group homes. I like one way better

than the other but I have some issues with both of them. First, I don't think

grown men should have to share a room and second I don't think group homes

should close on the holidays. I understand alot of this is due to funding. My

older brother lives on his own in section 8 housing. My other brothers are not

quite able to live on their own. I am looking to hear about people's

experiences with group homes in general and specifically about group homes in

IL.

Thanks Nora
