Guest guest
Happy Anniversary! Thank you for starting this! Great Job! Finato www.AngelSpeaks.com www.wegrowdreams.org From: Marie Grass Amenta <teteme@...> Subject: Our Anniversary IPADDUnite Date: Thursday, September 11, 2008, 7:21 AM Happy Anniversary to us! It is two years today we went on line and became Illinois Parents of Adults with Developmental Disabilities UNITE! We are, as of this writing, 526 strong, and fighting to better the lives of our children who happen to have disabilities, siblings and clients in Illinois. Laurie came to Ellen and I in the summer of 2006 with the idea. We each had children who have autism who were approaching adulthood, or my case, already had. We three come from three different areas of Chicago land--Laurie from the western suburbs, Ellen from the northern suburbs and I, from the southern suburbs. At first, we thought we would put our resources together from our different areas, we could compare notes and network--but what about the WHOLE STATE? There were no resources or support for any of us with older children or adults with disabilities in Illinois. What about an on line, group to not only offer support but serve as a resource as well? Through many email discussions, the present form of IPADDUnite! began to take shape. We wanted to offer a place not just for parents, but siblings and professionals as well. The needs and education of children are well documented but what about after those adorable kiddies age out and seem to fall into an abyss? What about jobs and vocational training? What about living options? What about the alphabet gobbledygook of agencies and programs we need to know about and have become part of our daily lexicon? What about state agencies, guardianship issues and SSI and Medicaid? What about dealing with challenging behaviors or transition options and issues? What about being able to come to place where there would be no judgment with our problems no one else can understand? What about a place where we can speak of quality of living--how can our loved ones live as full as life as possible and what do others do to enhance their loved ones lives? We wanted to include those with all sorts of disabilities, not just autism, realizing the " more the merrier " and the stronger we would become. We have evolved--some things we thought would be important, weren't and things we didn't think were so much of as an issue, are. We've tried to stay apolitical but we realize with funding and who's in charge of the purse strings, we have to at least present facts, trying not to be emotional in our views. Our files are full of information and we encourage you to take a look, you may be surprised at what's there. We have tried to include professionals in many fields of interest and hope you know we are still trying to top ourselves, with information and a kind ear. We are evolving and plan a few new options for us around the beginning of 2009. I imagine all of us, sitting around a kitchen table, sipping coffee-- -maybe something stronger!--with a big bowl of M & Ms (Laurie, Ellen and I believe in " any chocolate in a storm " ). I think of us talking about important issues as well as laughing and crying together. I think of us in support of each other, helping those who feel helpless to feel more in control and reassuring those who need to be assured they are doing the right thing. I think of each of us, reaching across this Land of Lincoln, holding hands in strength, friendship and understanding. As we hold hands in solidarity across cyber-space, I know we become stronger advocates for the needs of our loved ones. Happy Anniversary IPADDUnite! Guest guest
I am one of those members who read, get confused, read some more and hope that I will learn to do the right thing for my son who is 17, severe/profoundly developementally disabled. I trust this group to give me the real story and I am so very thankful for it. Happy anniversary to all of you founders and contributors. While I may not be able to contribute much at this time please know what a difference you all make. Lori

Guest guest
Maybe some of us view this anniversity different. After 30 years, we have no epidemiology study that proves HIV causes AIDS, no proof that HIV is sexually transmitted, no vaccine, no cure, no evidence that HIV is in anyone's blood, and this masssive waste of our tax dollars for a disease that doesn't affect 1% of our population. But we do have faulty tests that will ruin one's life jsut the same, HIV positives placed in jail for having sex, people not allowed insurance based on flawed science, pregnant women forced to take toxic drugs or the fear of losing their children, small babies force-fed HAART, and those who take the HAART are risking more serious health problems due to the black-box warnings. The way I see it, this isn't much cause for celebration but rather the status quo, which is greed and corruption. However, I do thank Ed Asner, Crowe, Duesberg and so many others who speak the truth about this.
