Guest guest
Hi all, I am one of those parents who has debated, internally, about whether my daughter could understand voting enough to really cast an informed ballot. I knew she understood several points, including: 1) People who take the time to meet with her, invite her into their offices and sit to look thru her picture books about her life and ask her thoughtful questions about it, then actually listen patiently while she tells the answers....these are the 'good' people we want being the 'boss' or 'principal' of our state or country. The elected officials who meet us in the hall for a quick hello or who can't make any time at all to meet with us are not necessarily the ones we'd vote for. 2) She understands that voting means making a 'choice' -- 's choice -- and that it's a really big deal for a grownup person (like her) to be allowed to make such a choice. Palin was the one who really pushed me over the edge to my voting -- when I heard one of her stump speeches where she talked about the decisions and judgements we need to make as really simple...who are the 'good guys' and who are the 'bad guys'? I thought to myself, well heck, Jerue understands that!! So off we went!! It was a really proud moment for her yesterday, and I was happy we went. That some friends had just that morning given me a box of Fannie May chocolates as a belated birthday gift for didn't hurt either; she'll now expect chocolates every time she votes, I'm sure! A fact which Ellen, I'm guessing, would also support...imagine how we could increase voter turnout, Ellen, if instead of a 'I voted' sticker every person got a piece of chocolate?
