Guest guest
I have read many things on public transportation in the past about 'benefits' on free transportation for special abled. You are really lucky to be able to participate in this program. I was just reading the headlines and have been following public transportation in southern IL and all our nes is a buzz about is increasing rates and cutting back service. I am not too upset over this because we have no service anyway. My son cannot benefit from public transportation because we live in rural town called Millstadt, 7 miles ooutside of Belleville. When he was in school we had transportation to gradeschool and highschool but after that, it has been and will always be our responsibility to get him where he needs to go. Even when he participated in some programs we were told if we could get him to the edge of town they would pick him up, but they could not come into town. I felt this was splitting hairs but decided not to start the battle. Everything has to be a battle just to acquire things that most take for granted. It would be so nice if those who had benefits would appreciate what they have, and instead of always wanting more for themselves, spread it around for the rest who have nothing! Just my thoughts! Guest guest
Hi Kathy: Equity of funding and supports and services is something that Lilia Teninty, Dir. of Div. of DD is really concerned about...the challenge is how to translate that in the real world, especially in rural or spread out areas such as yours. I am wondering if it would be useful, perhaps, for you to create a list of the things that are the biggest barriers in your son's life and put that into a letter to Director Teninty? It might help her to focus on what she can do to help. Obviously, she cannot create jobs, but if the barrier is getting to a job, she needs to know and so to the public transit authorities....I know there were more hearings around the state recently about transportation. Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestion, I will put a letter together. The only thing is in this type of situation, there is so much funding needed and so much already going out. It all has to come from somewhere, and boils down to the taxes. The more we want, the more we have to pay to get it and when there are so many wanting we are paying for so many it seems a bit redundent to keep adding to the problem. Our taxes are so unbelievably high now, how much higher can they go?!?! It is such a burden trying to keep up with them as it is. Sometimes I think it is just easier just handling things myself and it is like everything else in life, if we cannot afford it, we just dont get it. Thanks Ellen!
