Guest guest
sweet story, but not true. Actually, the step son is blind..not ds or paraplegic ----Original Message Follows---- From: " Amy Petulla " <amyp@...> < > Subject: great story Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 09:08:40 -0500 Forgive me if this was already on the list-- I just got it and thought it was worth sharing. Amy >Subject: Nice Story > >In a supermarket, Kurtis the stock boy, was busily working when a new >voice came over the intercom asking for a carry out at check register 4. Kurtis was almost finished, and wanted to get some fresh air, and decided to answer the call. As he approached the check-out stand a distance smile caught his eye, the new check out girl was beautiful. She was an older woman (maybe 26, and he was only 22) and he fell in love. > >Later that day, after his shift was over, he waited by the punch clock to find out her name. She came into the break room smiled softly at him and took her card and punched out, then left. He looked at her card, BRENDA. >He walked out only to see her start walking up the road. > >Next day, he waited outside as she left the supermarket, and offered her a ride home. He looked harmless enough, and she accepted. When he dropped her off, he asked if maybe he could see her again, outside of work. She simply said it wasn't possible. He pressed and and she explained she had two children and she couldn't afford a baby-sitter, so he offered to pay for the baby-sitter. Reluctantly she accepted his offer for a date for the following Saturday. > >That Saturday night he arrived at her door only to have her tell him that she was unable to go with him. The baby-sitter had called and canceled. >To which Kurtis simply said, " Well, lets take the kids with us. " She tried to explain that taking the children was not an option, but again not taking no for an answer, he pressed. Finally brought him inside to meet her children. She had an older daughter who was just cute as a bug, then brought out her son, in a wheelchair, he was born a paraplegic with Down's syndrome. Kurtis asked , " I still don't understand why the kids can't come with us? " was amazed. Most men would run away from a woman with two kids, especially if one had disabilities. Just like her first husband and father of her children did. > >That evening Kurtis and loaded up the kids, went to dinner and the >movies. When her son needed anything Kurtis would take care of him. >When he needed to use the rest room, he picked him up out of his chair, >took him, brought him back. The kids loved Kurtis. At the end of the evening, knew this was the man she was going to marry and spend the rest of her life with. A year later, they were married and Kurtis adopted both of her children and since they have added two more kids. > >So what happened to the stock boy and check out girl? >Well, Mr. & Mrs. Kurt Warner, now live in St. Louis, where Kurt is employed by the St. Louis Rams, and will be Quarterbacking that team on Sunday in the Super Bowl. > >Now you know the rest of the story! Guest guest
Wonder why the coach waited so long to let prove his abilities? I truly believe all those who are given a handicap label have more ability than the disabilities typicals place upon them. And that would be a good thing. Some in attendance at Athena's game against Spencerport will say it played out like a Hollywood script; like " Rudy, " or " Radio; " stories about a long-shot and a waterboy who inspired their teams by not letting their shortcomings stop them from giving their all. In what " J-Mac " McElwain did during the waning moments of the " Senior Night " at Athena, there may be much more. is the trainer for the Athena varsity team. So dedicated is , he has not missed a game or practice in the three years he's served the team. Wednesday for " Senior Night, " Athena coach Jim had suit up for the game. He sat excitedly on the bench in his school colors, number 52; an acknowledgement of 's commitment to the program. Athena moved to a comfortable 40-point lead against Spencerport. With the home crowd calling and classmates waving signs of support, called down the bench to number 52. , headband and all, headed out onto the court. " I just wanted to score a basket, " McElwain said. " I " m just sitting there saying `Let him score just one point,' " his mom, Deb said. With the help of his teammates, stared down a shot from the corner. The entire Athena bench, and every person in the gym rose. missed.. by six feet. Moments later, grabbed another pass and let it rain. The shot, from beyond the three-point arc, swished straight through. In unison, more than 300 people screamed in exaltation. In the game's final four minutes, shot five more times from behind the three-point arc. He made them all. Each time, teammates on the bench would hold their heads and scream, fans would stomp, tears would flow. When the horn sounded, had scored 20 points. He set an Athena record with a half-dozen three-pointers. His teammates and friends stormed the court. They raised him on their shoulders... wide-eyed and in awe of what they had just witnessed. They asked for his autograph. " I was focused on the game. You gotta be focused on the game. Not anything else, " said. What made being " in the zone " Wednesday not just another shooting streak is that he is autistic. What his example will do for others with autism is a story yet to be told. As for , whose teammates gave him the nickname " J-Mac " (as in Syracuse University guard Gerry " G-Mac " McNamara), his senior moment may continue to move his teammates in their pursuit of a post-season title. Coach hopes so. " It was truly the most amazing thing I've ever seen in my life. "
Guest guest
I agree , I recently met a man working at a " Menards " (similar to Home Depot) who had a physical handicap affecting his speech and coordination...some kind of mild cerebral palsy. He's a meek character, but if you talk to him you quickly figure out he's a perfectly intelligent and capable guy. I was annoyed to see how a few of his unknowing coworkers treated him. You know the jock type of guys who like to throw their arm around his neck, or slap them on the back a little too hard and call them their " little buddy, " or some such thing. Treating him like he's a child, or as though he's completely mentally retarded. When I took the time to speak with him, he was one of the most helpful employees at that store. I learned he has a wife, a home... all the normal trappings of adulthood. But you have to get past what's on the surface and look deeper. > > Wonder why the coach waited so long to let prove his abilities? Guest guest
You hit the nail on the head. Coach probably didn't want to risk losing points. I hope he eats crow for the rest of his life. The story given local was, " Since they were up by double-digits the coach decided to let him play. " Nothing like giving every kid a chance.
