Guest guest
I am sure others have opinions and maybe even some answers, but how wonderful that your daughter has found something that she is interested in doing. It sounds like the Director is certainly willing. I would talk to your daughter's case manager or whoever is the go-to person at your daughter's school and ask if an aide can be supplied by the school. I have no direct experience with this kind of situation but I am guessing someone out there does. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... Helper in play (?) Hi, I know there is so much more pertinent information to read than this but if anyone has an answer to the following " question " it would be greatly appreciated. One of my impaired daughters would like to be part of the stage crew for her middle school's play this coming March (I think, no date set yet). She does okay when in a group setting and could follow a buddy. The play director said it will be crowded in the back and she should have an aide with her. Thus my question, since this is a school activity (but extracurricular) does the school supply the aide at their cost or do I need to get someone? As the play director wrote, she does not come from a special needs background and really does not know what to expect but wants to make my daughter feel as comfortable as possible. Thank you so much. Guest guest
Anne, it's my understanding that aides for extra curricular activities are not provided unless it's sponsored by your special ed district. Each year, SASED has a couple of dances in the evenings at alternating high schools and they do provide aides there, but that is a special ed activity. You can ask your program coordinator. Good luck!
Guest guest
Anne, When my son was in Jr. High he wanted to be in the play.? My son is non-verbal and the play was a musical, but the director was wonderful and put him in a chorus group.? An aide was not provided, but the group took him under their collective wings.? He loved being a part of the group and followed along with what everyone else was doing.? It was understood, however,?that if he couldn't handle it I would either be the aide or he would drop out.? Could something similar work for your daughter?? Good Luck! Lori Lukens Helper in play (?) Guest guest
The answer to this varies from district to district. The answer for this school is to ask if any student in any of that district's middle schools has ever had assistance to participate in an extra-curricular activity. That would include sports or intramurals, and assistance such as a 1-on-1 or an interpreter for a deaf student. If they've done it for anyone, then they must find someone to do it for the daughter. My son participated on the track team in middle school. The coach wanted an aide for the meets (he felt that practices would go o.k.).. School staff met and decided to have an aide for the meets, and actually ended up tapping his classroom teacher. We didn't know if the district had ever done this at the middle school level, back when the topic came up. What we did know was that aides to support extra-curricular activities HAD been done at the high school level. If the school says no, we won't pay, then I'd ask if it's possible to bring in a mature high school female to help, giving her credit for this. National Honor Society requires service hours, and this would fit the bill. If so, then ask them to contact the head of NHS at the nearby high school for a student. -Gail From: raskles1@... <raskles1@...> Subject: Helper in play (?) Guest guest
Well Anne, I know that when my son was in 1st grade the school would have provided a 1:1 aide for summer camp at the park district (we found that didn't need it) so I would think that it's certainly worth checking into.
