Hi June

I wondered the same I think she was extremely lucky to be able to trace it

back to the salmonella poisoning she got from the chinese restaurant, the

majority of us do not have that option and have to live with the disease and

no way of finding out what was the trigger or apportioning blame to anyone.

According to the ARC info Reactive Arthritis is normally short lived

interesting the Judge came to that conclusion.

Treatment of Arthritis

Reactive arthritis is also known as Reiter's Syndrome. It can be

recognized by heat, redness and swelling of the joints. It

specifically attacks the spine but can be seen in other joints,

your urinary tract and sometimes the eyes. This disease belongs

to a family of arthritic conditions named spondylarthropathies.

The spine is the main target of this disease. Symptoms will

include weight loss, sores on the skin, and ulcers in the mouth,

fever and swelling.

The causes of Reiter's Syndrome are not confirmed. It can affect

anyone at anytime regardless of race gender and age. Scientists

have found a link to genetics in that there are certain families

where the disease is more prevalent. In fact with 75% of patients

who suffer from Reiter's Syndrome a common gene was found that

starts the disease. White men of around 20 and 40 are most

commonly affected. The disease can also be precipitated by

previous infections in the genitals, urinary tract and small

intestine. It is also linked to salmonella contamination, so be

sure to cook your foods well to avoid this risk.

This disease can affect a variety of different parts of the body.

Here are some of the symptoms that you can expect to find when

diagnosing this problem:

* Skin sores: these painful sores manifest themselves at the

onset of the problem.

* Urinary infections: this disease makes you more susceptible to

urinary tract infections. These infections should be treated as

soon as possible.

* Pain and swelling of the joints:

* Stiffness and lack of mobility of the joints

* Inflammation of the eyes: this disease can also affect your

eyes and it is important to get help from your eye doctor as soon

as possible.

A number of treatments for this disease must be used in order to

maintain a patient's health and allow them to lead healthy

lives.

* Medicines such as NSAIDS will act as anti inflammatory agents

for the joints

* Antibiotics and skin medicines can be used to treat the sores

that are found on the body

* Urologists will give medications to clear up urinary

infections

* Occupational therapy will help to keep joints mobile

* Physiotherapists recommend exercises to decrease pain and

swelling in the joints

* Dermatologists will take care of skin problems

* Inflammation of the eyes can be taken care of by an eye doctor

It is important to know as much as you can about Reactive

arthritis once you have been diagnosed so that you can take the

necessary steps to maintain your health and relieve symptoms.
