Guest guest
If you have been in communication with your state legislator(s), email this link to them. Guest guest
Nada. I did the same as always -- highlight a little more than the http address itself (so the " click " doesn't just go to it), then edit, copy, go to destination, set cursor, edit, paste, delete the few extra characters carried with, and Voila! Works for me. Guest guest
Ellen, This truly makes me sick. The group home is about 15 miles from me. I had heard that it was to be closing, but when I read the article, it truly made me unhappy. There just aren't enough of them to go around & then to uproot the residents when they are happy where they are is so wrong. There is a shelter care in our county also that had been housing 42 people. They are also closing, because the county chairman wants to get out of the shelter care business. I can't call my state reps til Tuesday, but will copy the article, if I can & may hand deliver it to at least one. Liz

Guest guest
The problem as I see it, is that things get better than they get worse, here and elsewhere... I would agree that conditions for our children and certainly general economic conditions will improve eventually...but there is no sustainable future for our children. When the economy tanks, one of the ways governments balance the budget is to take from the higher end costs such as human services and since most of those affected cannot advocate for themselves, it is an easy solution...Our children will be an ever ready source of revenue because there is no mandate for community supports and services. Guest guest
Ok here is something I need help with....... please don't post or send me emails telling me how insensitive I am either, I am asking a legitamite, non judgemental question, that I need an answer to. Okay, here is a senerio..... I know some family very well, and know thses facts: 1) Mother is working as a teacher 2) Father was working as a minister 3) Father died in a car accident a few years ago 4) They do not meet poverty standards 5) They own a home 6) Father had 2 insurance policies of AT LEAST $500,000 7) children get SSI? each one every month, even though mom makes a decent wage. 8) children are NT kids 9) here is the one I can't understand: they waste the money on fast food, " hanging out " , etc. okay, now I am very sorry for the loss of the father ( my kids lost their's as well, but to divorce (and they never see him), so I get it, I feel bad for the kids that lost their dad so tragically. BUT, why are these people MORE deserving than our kids- who cannot take care of themselves, for the basics like housing (CILAS), or able to work in most cases at a job where they can earn enough to support food, housing etc. Okay, I know mom and dad both worked and put into the system..... but I have as well, as probably all of us on this site have as well, so where is our children's money? Also in my case,Don't say child support, I don't get any. And no, I am not at poverty level either-(smae as this family I speak of) Is there something wrong with this system? Should those who cannot support themselves due to a disability be entitled AS WELL? Guest guest
I see the knowledgeable folks have already clarified that this is probably survivor benefits. But I think I see a deeper question in your post, one we all run into sometimes. When our democracy sets up entitlements and aid programs, there is often not parity and is that right? Obviously, on one level the answer is " no " . But the reality of a democracy is that among the competing interests, the self-serving will be the strongest. We may wish our Constitution stated that programs for the most disabled must be funded before we spend any money on ourselves -- a noble thought, but probably unworkable. So, as it relates to Social Security, the program was set up in a time when " welfare " was socially very unacceptable, and yet something had to be done to reduce poverty in the elderly. So the program was designed more or less as a guarenteed pension plan and the participants have a real entitlement to the payouts (I don't use the word " right " , because I think it is vastly over used). Now, you will note that there is still an element of " welfare " in the program -- obviously the low income folks often take out more than they put in, and the high income folks, while they get more, don't get back what they put in unless they live incredibly long lives. Such was the " figleaf " that allowed the program to be acceptable to a broad enough majority. Since that time, we have expanded the inequality of payout as society became more comfortable with the welfare aspect. We even put the SSI program under Social Security, an expedient, but perhaps longterm risky move, as noted below. There is even now (witness the recent election) a resistance, for example, to raising the limits of income on which FICA is assessed. A recent editorial in the Wall Street Journal argues that resistance may be a good thing, because Social Security has been a very successful program, and to push it farther into a welfare mode risks losing the wide support it has always had. They cite the SSI addition, particularly, as adding the aura of welfare to the system. I know this is cold comfort, but the Social Security program has done a massive amount of good in ameliorating elder and orphan poverty. I don't think it's insensitive at all to question why this program doles out so much money while some programs for the disabled are underfunded. But I think the answer lies in finding other money for the disabled. Social Security " entitlements " will always be better funded than " benefits " just as we all keep more money than we give to charity (with apologies to Rev. Warren, Mr. Buffett and all other exceptions). > > > > The only saving grace (selfish I know) is that my oldest is 16 and > there is > > some time before he will be in this position...hopefully through > our voices, > > Illinois will be vastly improved by the time he enters residential > care... > > > > NOw tell me Illinois politicians (regardless of party) shouldn't > our tax > > dollars highest priority be to spend on those who are unable to > take care of > > themselves...or at least pay the bills we already owe??? > > > > > > > > > > In a message dated 11/28/2008 7:34:03 P.M. Guest guest
Yea, I guess this is what they are receiving. However, how come a dead parent's children get money (when it's debateable whether they need it to survive), and a child with disabilities who has a dead beat father doesn't get money so the mom can stay home and take care of him? Seems weird. I think if this is an old policy as you stated was started back when there was only one parent working, shouldm;t it be revised now. I mean right there would free up tons of money for states and fed govt.? I mean we all pay into stuff that we will likely never get, ie: welfare and possibly social security if you are as young as I am. So seems in tough times, everything should be on the table and looked at right? Guest guest
No problem Ellen. Maybe someday, and the time is not right now. No offense taken. I do realize as well, that we do not want to make anyone upset either, and what you have to say might make others defensive, upset, sad, etc. Some things are better left unsaid for the good of everyone.
