Guest guest
I am always concerned that folks don't separate the housing issue from the services issue. The waivers ONLY provide supports and services. They don't provide housing, food, etc. In Illinois, our service providers have traditionally (but not always) provided the housing with the services, using SSI and other resources to pay for the housing. Many feel that is not the best model. But, that may be a discussion for another day. If someone cares to investigate??? Ellen -- Subject: Housing Issues One of the issues with housing being determined by waiver placements alone is that there is a finite source of money. Many people who are on the waiting lsits could benefit from using the USDA Rural Housing options for housing. Those who hold a job and make a minimum of $14,000 (approx) a year (can include both SSI and work) for one would be eligible for mortagage funding thru the USDA Rural Development fund. Mortgages require good credit but no down payment and interest of 1% on 30 year mortgages. And the top amount able to pay for a house would enable most people to buy a starter home (3 br, 2 bath.) I doubt that there is anyplace in NJ but there sure are in NY, PA, DE. And the great thing is that this is another funding source so far not affected by the downturn in economy. Guest guest
It is always good to clarify that, Charlotte. What I posted would be a way to fund a house as an alternative to CILA.
