Aiken's charm appeals to seniors and his songs lift their spirits. That sounds a lot like another favorite among seniors - flowers! Flowers have long been an important part of our lives. They're with us almost every step of the way. New parents receive flowers at the birth of a child. They're exchanged on first dates. They're with us to celebrate anniversaries and special occasions. And, they usher us out of this world on our caskets and graves. Flowers have many uses, one of which is as a gift of cheer to those in need. A gift of cheer may never be needed more than in our old age as our bodies begin to decline and we're less able to get out and about as much as we'd like to. And, a recent study conducted by researchers at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, flowers were proven to be of great benefit to senior citizens. The study was led by Dr. Jeannette Haviland-, director of the Human Development Lab at Rutgers. Over 100 senior citizens took part in the study. Some of the seniors involved in the study were lucky enough to receive flowers, and some did not. The results of the study showed that the presence of flowers had a remarkably positive impact on mood, memory, and the ability to connect with others. Dr. Haviland- believes the results of the study are significant " because as our nation grows older and life becomes more stressful, we look for easy and natural ways to enhance our lives - and the lives of our aging parents. Now, one simple answer is right under our noses. " Specific results of the study showed: * Flowers reduce depression: Those participating in the study who received flowers were noticeably happier and more positive. * Flowers improve memory: When flowers were present, seniors scored higher in memory tasks. * Flowers help seniors connect: Those who received flowers made an effort to connect with people in their community. In fact, they even enlarged their social circles. Knowing that there's a simple way to help those we love enjoy their senior years even more is of great comfort to many as our senior population steadily increases. Ordering flowers is such a simple way to say we care and it requires no special equipment to do so. Just call or stop in at your florists and tell them you want to send flowers to someone special. That's it-no wires, cords, or Clay Aiken CDs involved! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers (http://www.wesleyberryflowers.com), a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
