Funny that it didn't seem that loud when you turned the radio off the night before. That's because as the day wears on you adapt to the noise level. Sound can be both an enemy and an ally. Often we pay attention to the loudest sounds and allow them to distract and annoy us. We also tend to miss out on some of the more subtle ones. But it's those quieter, calmer sounds that offer you some of the best information, insight and relaxation. Here are 5 sounds you don't want to miss: 1. Music Do you enjoy a wide range of music or do you tend to play the same artists over and over? Music doesn't have to be simply entertainment. It's a great tool you can use to impact your mood and energy level. Expand your music library to include a variety of genres. Use upbeat music when you have chores to do. Use classical music for relaxation. Find songs that resonate with you and use them to reconnect with your priorities and values. 2. Nature People are hardwired to connect with nature. We have an inherent desire to create bonds with other living things. Tuning into nature's sounds lets you build a deeper connection with the natural world. Sit in your yard or go for a walk and just listen. You can also find CDs that have nature sounds with or without music. 3. Silence How often in your day do you experience silence - no TV, no radio, no traffic, no chatter? Sometimes people are scared of silence but what you will likely find is the more you create silent spaces in your day, the more comfortable you become with them. When you are silent, you are better able to hear other sounds, like your own breathing, your internal chatter, or subtle sounds in your environment. It's in this silent space that greater self connection and grounding is possible. 4. Your Inner Critic Your inner critic is probably a sound that you are quite familiar with so it might seem surprising that it's on the list of sounds not to miss. It's important to hear when your inner critic is chattering. It gives you some great insight into the ways you are holding yourself back. They key is to hear it and not necessarily heed it. Just notice when and where your inner critic speaks the loudest. 5. Your Spirit's Voice Unlike your inner critic, your spirit's voice may be one you have not heard for a long time. That's often because the inner critic has been making so much noise you can't hear anything else. Or it could be that you don't have a quiet space in your day during which you can access that voice. You'll know when you are listening to your spirit's voice because it always has your best interests at heart. It's a voice of compassion, encouragement, courage and great wisdom. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Laurel Vespi, certified life coach is best known as a masterful coach and sought after public speaker.
