Guest guest
Well, I still have been staying above water even though I feel like these graduate classes are pulling me down. To top it off, my migraines have kicked in over drive the past few days. I'm beginning to think I need to go back onto a beta blocker. It seems the Migranol was working for quite awhile and now all of a sudden, the migraines are going through this uncontrollable phase again. So, I'll be bringing it up to the doctor when I see him again in October. At any rate, I have a thesis paper to write this weekend and need to get started on it. Will check back in later. -Sue E. Guest guest
I thought that I wrote down Len's dad.....I am so sorry!!!! It is horrible enough for it to be his dad....let alone hiim...sorry for the mis wording...I think that I have Len on the brain so much now that he is returning to work on the 5th. I just am concerned it is too soon. We will see. but Mike...I do appreciate it. We are going to the rehab center each day....even if just for a few hours to see him...we don't stay too long, since he is tired after a long work out with rehab, but we want him to know we are there for him....Len has a great sister and a wonderful brother who are married with really great spouses. They are also going to the center on a regular basis. I am truly blessed with a great family and a great family of inlaws. My heart just breaks for my father in law. He is just a great, loving and generous man. I hate to see him in pain. He is really doing remarkable. He is working so hard at Pt and OT, and they are really helping him to learn how to get around. He has a tremendous amount of front steps. This is the biggest hurtle ow for him to face. He broke his leg so badly that he crushed his fib. He had a fractured, dislocated and severely displaced tib-fib fracture. They actually had to place a rod through the crushed bone to salvage it. It is amazing what they can do these days!!! Thanks again, Mike. HOpe your holidays were beautiful for you and yours. love ya kathy **************New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making headlines. Guest guest
Happy New Year Kathy !!!! I'm so sorry about Lens Dad. It is so hard when an older person gets hurt like that.Hopefully he will make a complete recovery. as far as the amputation goes, I have met a lady with RSD that did have one leg removed. Her leg was completely black,dead... But I haven't seen her since it was removed. She is a friend of one of my sisters. She worked at K-mart for years ( in a wheelchair).Ill have to see if Margie know her phone #.. that is if she can remember.. She is having a real bad problem with her memory. But she seems to be fairly OK, she still complains that her head hurts so bad. She can barely walk anymore,She is constantly falling..But they say she is cancer free right now. So I guess right now it a wait and see what happens next.. Thank you so much for all the prayers...We all know prayers do help Well sweetie,, you have a wonderful New year,, Hope the new year is so much better for you and your family.. thank you so much for being there for me,,, Love and soft hugs to you T lisa From: KGAVI@... <KGAVI@...> Subject: Re: (no subject) Stimulator Date: Thursday, January 1, 2009, 6:04 AM Hey HOney! Guest guest
Kathy, I am sorry to tell you that I have never had contact with anyone who had good success with a BKA or other amputation. I remember years ago we had a fellow in our group who underwent total arm amputation, the RSD did spread to the point that he eventually committee suicide. I met one woman who underwent BKA and is now totally bedridden. Initially she attempted a prosthesis but it was far too painful and then as the RSD spread as I say she is now totally bedridden. I know of both Dr. Stanton-Hicks and Dr. Racz and would respect an opinion from either one of these men. Being that you have more than one advising the BKA I think I would be leaning more in that direction than the other. What did Dr. Racz advise for pain management in lieu of the BKA? I have also had surgery as well as a heart attack without it affecting or spreading the RSD. However, I have never had anything that was directly related to the nerves involved with the areas of my RSD. I can tell you that the stroke that I had a year ago, which affected my entire left side has definitely affected the RSD in my left leg. The spread is not intollerable but it has definitely increased my pain levels. Sorry I can't be of much help to you except to pray that whatever you decide it is the right choice for you. Guest guest
Hello,. Dorothy! Thanks for getting back to me so soon. You did help me with your advise. I knew if anyone would know...it would be you. Unfortunatley, we have both had the damned disease for so long, that I have a full respect of your knowledge of it. It is so nice to be able to talk to someone who knows about it and has had it as long as I have. It is horrendous to have to go through...but with friends like you....it is made somewhat easier. Thank you, my friend. I am so sorry about your stroke and your other health issues. Why all this sadness and pain happens to kind, good and loving folks, I will NEVER, EVER understand. Regarding Drs. Hicks and Racz....that is why is so frustrating....they are both so involved with RSD for so many years, and are both classified as TRUE specialists, that I don't know whose medical advise to follow. Dr. Racz told me that until I get the very first RSD out of my body, I will never be able to be whole again. This has been there now for over 26 years.....good luck getting it outy...yeah, right!!! As far as pain relief...he suggested another stimulator be placed for my left leg. He truly believes that if I had two for my legs, it would make the difference that I need and would manage the pain so much more. He doesn't seem to understand, though, that my back is so bad already from all the surgeries. I already have two stims, have had a pain pump, and have had spinal surgery. How much more can my poor back handle...and whose to say that the RSD wiil not spread further from yet another surgery...although, true it has never spread from any surgery that I have had. I will certainly keep you in my thoughts and daily prayers also, Dorothy. God Bless you, my friend. Love, kathy G. **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! Guest guest
Kathy: A BKA is a major decision. I totally understand why you would be looking for someone who has had good results with it. Dorthy said she had never had anything directly related to the affected nerves. I've had three knee surgeries on the leg that is affected with RSD. None of those surgeries caused my RSD to spread. My pain management had to ok the surgeries before my orthopedic would do them. My pm doctor told the orthopedic to ask anethesiology to do a block to keep the RSD from spreading. I'm drawing a blank right now on what the block was called, but they put it in at the top of my leg and it numbed my leg and they kept my leg numb for 24-36 hours after surgery. Of course my knee surgeries were minor compared to an amputation, but I thought I would share that I had three surgeries in the RSD affected leg and it didn't spread my RSD. Of course I was only 16 when the first knee surgery was done, 18 when the second was done and 26 at the time of the last surgery. My young age could have played a role in my recovery and RSD not spreading. I don't know your age, but with my last knee surgery it took longer to heal. I'm assuming it might be because I'm getting older and my body's slowing down. Good luck with whatever decision you make. I'll keep you in my prayers. > > Kathy, > I am sorry to tell you that I have never had contact with anyone who had good success with a BKA or other amputation. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I wish I could have been more help to you. I know that I would not want to be facing the decision that you are. I don't know how Dr. Racz expects you to get rid of your initial site or any other RSD site. I do think though that I might be willing to at least try his recommendation of a 2nd SCS for your leg before the BKA. I agree that there is a chance that the additional surgery may cause problems but I personally would be more willing to try that than risking the spread of the RSD due to the BKA. The thing is, even if you have the leg removed, that does not mean that the RSD will be gone from that leg and the pain in your upper leg will simply be magnified rather than distributed throughout the whole leg. With the BKA there is also the problem with your diabetes and the fact that healing is not one of your best qualities. Have you spoken with your endocrinologist about the fact that you are considering the surgery? Dorothy
Guest guest
HI, Dorothy! Thanks for your concern. You are helping me more than you know. Yes, I spoke with my endo...he seems to agree with the BKA. He was also concerned with the DM...since it is such a drastic surgery, but when he looked at all my records, saw the foot, and spoke with the other drs....he told me he doesn't see another course of treatment. I agree with you about the third stim. I know that it will be hard on me...yet another back surgery and yet another stim...but once I do the BKA, there is no going back...I certainly can't super glue it back on. I have spoken with all the docs regarding the fact that the RSD will still be in the left leg....at the point of the stump and possibly above...but they all disagree with me...saying that the RSD in my left leg is all under my knee. This is where all the pain is...this is where all the color changes, swelling and all the symptoms are located. Maybe they are right...I just don't know...????!?! I also agree with you that how the hell am I supposed to get the original RSD out of the knee...it happened 26 years ago...good luck with that one, right? Thanks again for your thoughts, Dorothy. How are you feeling today? I hope well. Take care! Gentle hugs, kathy **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! Guest guest
Hi, Suzy... the reason is that my foot and ankle are so severely damaged and there is so much RSD through out that foot and ankle...it is " not salvegable " as the doctors call it. The bones, ligaments and cartilage have all turned inward. they are all permanently inward causing the pain to be even worse. Of course I would never consider this in the other areas where the RSD is located...even where it is moderately severe. The doctors at the cleveland clinic, johns hopkins, mayo clinic and jefferson have all told me and my pm dr that my foot is the worst case they have seen to date. They have taken so many pictures of my foot, and asked me to sign permission slips to teach about RSD, and to 1put if in the New Enland Journal regarding RSD. They have used these photos in medical schools all over. These doctors have told me that in the past, they did amputations more frequently, but now they only do them for the patients that have no hope of a productive life due to the limb. My RSD is below the knee right now...it is not above the knee...so unless it spreads from the surgery, i would not have the pain any longer from the RSD. One pain that does ocurr frequently with amputation is phantom pain. That is one of the biggest Draw backs on an amputation. Thanks for your thoughts and your well wishes. Kathy G. Guest guest
But I dont understand this if you have rsd in your leg below the knee like I do. why do they want to take off your leg? back years ago yes they did take off your leg or arms if you had the rsd but they found that it did nothing you still had the rsd pain because its your brain that is telling us we have pain there I to ask what if we take my leg off so the pain would not be there. every dr I went to In new york city said you will still have the rsd pain so no we will not take any part off. maybe I miss some of the message you all wrote and only reading part of it. what ever you do I wish you the best. suzy > > HI, Dorothy! > > Thanks for your concern.
