I didn't find the list, but if I do I will post it.

Here are some to try, anyway:

Common medical cause of tinnitus

There are typically two basic medical explanations for the cause of tinnitus. The first is that tinnitus can be a sign of hearing loss, so it is merely a sign of another problem. The other is that tinnitus can often be a symptom of almost any ear disorder, including the following:

◠Ear infections ◠Blocked ear canal ◠Wax build-up in the ear canal ◠Perforated ear drum ◠Injuries, such as whiplash or a direct blow to the ear or head ◠Prolonged or repeated exercise with the neck in a hyperextended position, such as when bicycle riding ◠Otosolerosis (hardening of the ear drum) ◠Cervical vertebra deterioration, mouth or TMJ disorders ◠Sinus infection ◠Tumors of the middle ear ◠Barotrauma (rapid change in environmental pressure, as on an airplane) ◠Meniere's disease ◠Damage to the ear caused by chemicals and drugs (caffeine, alcohol, NSAIDS (motrin, naproxen, Relafen), aspirin, Lipitor, barbiturates, quinine, Lasix and other “loop†diuretics, antibiotics, etc.). In fact, tinnitus is a potential side effect with over 200 prescription and nonprescription drugs. In these cases, the tinnitus usually disappears when the underlying chemicals or drugs are reduced or avoided ◠Toxicity caused by faulty diet and vaccinations ◠Severe weight loss from malnutrition or excessive dieting ◠Blast injury from gun fire or an explosion

Yet, other less common causes of tinnitus can arise with other disorders such as anemia, heart and blood vessel disorders including hypertension and arteriosclerosis, a tumor of the auditory nerve, or low thyroid hormone levels in the blood stream (hypothyroidism). In certain sensitive individuals, the mercury in common amalgam dental fillings can be a cause of tinnitus. The ringing could also be a signal that the body is overwhelmed with stress and work.

Exercise can also be a cause of tinnitus by creating micro-injury to the ear mechanism, resulting in abnormal auditory function. In February 1991, the New England Journal of Medicine stated that a cause of tinnitus can arise from the abrupt and powerful jarring force of high-impact sports and exercise.

As part of the natural aging process, deterioration of the cochlea and related reduced hearing ability due to old age (presbycusis) can also be a cause of tinnitus. Lastly, for reasons not entirely clear to medical researchers, but explained within the TTI website, general daily stress from the activities of daily living can and does worsen tinnitus.

There are many theories about how tinnitus sounds are actually produced inside the head, but nobody knows for sure. Since tinnitus is a symptom, not a disease, the best way to treat it is to determine what caused it.

Tinnitus can be a symptom of Meniere's disease, an inner ear disorder that also causes dizziness and nausea. But many other causes of tinnitus have been identified, such as:

ear infection

ear drum damage

allergies and sinus problems

tinnitus from exposure to loud noise

a blow to the head

high cholesterol

tinnitus from stress, depression, and traumatic life events

medicines

heavy metal poisoning

jaw alignment problems (TMJ)

low thyroid

ear wax build up

certain tumors

Sometimes there will be two or more causes of tinnitus in one patient, for example noise and stress occurring together is a common combination.

In one report, 47% of people with tinnitus and related disorders were found to have vitamin B12 deficiencies. Supplementation may therefore be of benefit. [Vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with chronic-tinnitus and noise-induced hearing loss. Am J Otolaryngol 1993;14: pp.94-9]

The findings of a recent study were very interesting. Of a group of twenty patients with tinnitus, ten tested positive for TMJ dysfunction in all diagnostic tests used. Nine tested positive to one or more of the diagnostic procedures. Only one patient of the twenty had no positive evidence of any jaw joint dysfunction. Dr. 's findings were published in The Journal of Craniomandibular Practice. ["Tinnitus of TMJ Origin: A Preliminary Report," Vol.10, No.2]Another research project was headed by L. Goode, MD, professor of ENT and Head and Neck surgery at Stanford University's School of Medicine. Drs and Goode were able to establish the mechanical connection between the ossicles in the middle ear and the capsule and disk of the TMJ. ["The TMJ-Ear Connection", Journal of Craniomandibular Practice, Vol. 13, No.1).]You may get an idea if the tinnitus is connected to your TMJ in some way, by

Clenching your teeth - does it change the tinnitus in some way? (Get louder/softer, pitch change)

Pushing in hard on the jaw with your palm. Does the tinnitus change?

Pushing in hard on the forehead with your hand. Resist with the head. Any changes?

As many as 50% of people using these techniques find a change in their tinnitus and a TMJ correlation they had not known about.

High concentrations of zinc are found in the inner ear. A Japanese study tested the theory that insufficient levels of zinc may therefore contribute to tinnitus. Researchers found that tinnitus sufferers with low zinc levels in their blood experienced an improvement in their symptoms when, after two weeks of zinc supplementation, their zinc levels rose significantly. Studies have shown a range of responses from nothing more than a placebo to an effectiveness rate of 50%. Gingko must be administered long term (many months) to achieve benefit. Amongst patients suffering from cerebrovascular insufficiency, a common problem associated with normal aging, a gingko extract produced a significant improvement in the symptoms of vertigo, tinnitus, headache and forgetfulness.

The effects of tinnitus can be magnified by at least 200 different drugs. This list includes some commonplace drugs such as aspirin, alcohol, caffeine, quinine, birth control pills and antibiotics such as gentamicin. It should be noted, however, that special gentamicin applications have cured tinnitus also.

Patients suffering from tinnitus were given 2ml of a medicated DMSO solution every 4 days. The medication contained anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory compounds and was applied locally to the external ear canal. They were also given an intramuscular injection of DMSO at the same time. After one month, 9 of the 15 subjects had a complete cessation of the tinnitus which didn't return during the one year observation period. It diminished in two others and in the remaining four occurred occasionally instead of permanently. Cold temperatures seemed to be the main factor causing it to return. [ls of the New York Academy of Sciences 75:243:468: p.74]

http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C177689.html

DID YOU NOTICE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT DMSO?Another study found that 25% of those with tinnitus and low serum zinc reported improvement after 3 to 6 months of supplementation. [ Am J Otol 1985;6: pp.116-7]
