Guest guest
On December 13, 2000, this letter was first posted to the Internet. (All bold face emphasis in this letter is mine.) On December 10, in a private posting, 'Moonbeam' asked me a wonderful question (I read it on December 12; please see Post Script.). On December 11, in a private posting, and Tom Roper (unaware of Moonbeam's posting) provided me with some valuable information (I read it on December 12; please see Post Script.). As a result of of Moonbeam's and and Tom's 'input', I became aware, for the first time in my life (I'm 64.) of the words 'beta glucan'.. As a result of Moonbeam's and and Tom's input, I have thought of this question - A cure for Cancer (stomach, colorectal, breast) is sold in Japan; why is it not sold in the United States of America? The following passages about Lentinan (and those in the Post Script) are from ADVANCES IN APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY, VOLUME 39, 'Medicinal and Therapeutic Value of the Shiitake Mushroom', pages 153 to 184, Academic Press, Inc., 1993, S.C. Jong and J.M. Birmingham, Mycology and Botany Department, American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, land 20852. page 157: " Lentinan is a beta-glucan... " page 177: " .....Remarkable life span prolongation has been achieved in patients with advanced and recurrent stomach, colorectal, and breast cancer. Lentinan is commercially available for clinical use. In 1987 it was the eighth top-selling anti-cancer drug in Japan with a 2.2% share of the market valued at $3 million (Fukushima, 1989). " Please see Post Script for further details. Hello everyone, Lentinan is not the most active constituent of the Shiitake mushroom; Thioproline is - a. Access the website, geocities.com/HotSprings/villa/1706/shiitake.html b. Refer to the table, 'Constituyentes Activos en el Shiitake' c. Look at the last entry of the table and you will see that Thioproline (Thioprolina) has the highest designation (Fuente) - 27. The designation for Lentinan is 13-16. Thioproline is never mentioned in 'Medicinal and Therapeutic Value of the Shiitake Mushroom'. In this letter I will refer to the National Library of Medicine, 'MEDLINE', www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed; when I do, type in the Unique Identifier number (UI) to 'pull-up' the exact citation on your computer screen. In my opinion, the shiitake mushroom, 'MGN-3' and 'Esteem SHARK plus' cartilage are only a means to an end - To supply the Cancer patient with a source (however - small) of currently available Thioproline. My point is this - Why should Cancer patients have 'to mess around' with these substitutes? Why couldn't they be administered 'pure' (98% to 99%) Thioproline by their physicians? Thioproline is currently available in Massachusetts, and it is inexpensive (see 'Letter to the Lake County Medical Society' for details). Individuals can't buy it, but their physicians should be able to obtain Thioproline with a purchase order. Thioproline achieved this result (UI: 80098547) when administered to Cancer patients in Spain in 1979: " .....Histological studies showed involution and transformation into low-grade malignancies and disappearance of evidence of cancer. " MEDLINE, a resource of our own Federal Government, labelled (1983) Thioproline as anti-cancerous (UI: 88098591): " The charge distribution of anti-cancer molecules 4-thiazolidine-carboxylic acid (j.s.r. - Thioproline)... " M. Judah Folkman, M.D., one of the world's foremost cancer scientists has shown an interest in Thioproline (1988); the implication of his research is that Thioproline can destroy cancer tumors by cutting off their blood supply; he has labelled the process antiangiogenesis; more details of his research can be found in (UI: 88275385): " .....Regression of growing capillaries was induced by proline analogs (1-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid, cis-hydroxyproline,d,L-3,4-dehydroproline, thioproline) and an inhibitor of prolyl hydroxylase (alpha, alpha-dipyridyl) which interfere with triple helix formation and prevent collagen deposition..... " " .....The antiangiogenic effects of these compounds (alone and in combination) were found to be directly related to their ability to inhibit collagen accumulaton. " Professor V. Schally, a Nobel Prize winner, has stated that compounds containing Thioproline ('Tac') - 1994 - " ...may have important therapeutic applications for the treatment of various malignancies such as prostatic, gastric, and pancreatic cancer, small cell lung carcinoma, and other tumors. " (UI: 95108018) 1997 - " ...have been designed as targeted anti-tumor agents for the treatment of various cancers... " (UI: 97165077) Is Professor Schally still interested in Thioproline ('Tac')? If you type schally tac into MEDLINE you will see that four references appear - the ones that I have already mentioned, 1994 and 1997, and one for July 1, 2000 (UI: 20342235) and one for October, 2000 (UI: 20427913). It is my hope that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the Universidad Complutense De Madrid, Espana, or someone in the world with medical authority will repeat (with vitamin C) the 1979 Spanish clinical trial in which these results were achieved after Thioproline had been administered to human beings with Cancer - " .....Definite signs of activity were observed...in other solid tumours, such as breast, renal, ovary, thyroid, and parotid cancer. " Only tumour cells were affected - " .....no effect was observed in the normal skin, mucosae, or other epithelial tissues..... " " .....Histological studies showed involution and transformtion into low-grade malignancies and disappearance of evidence of cancer. " Yours truly, , jsr1936@... 5086 Sunrise Avenue, Portage, Indiana 46368, (219) 763-1933 The Cure for Cancer? www.cures for cancer.ws/cures for cancer/tac-cure.htm Post Script - 1. On December 11, I wrote the following letter to the Lake/Porter County Medical Society. I had not yet become aware of the words beta-glucan and lentinan - Lake/Porter County Medical Society 1205 West Lincoln Highway, Suite 7A Merrillville, Indiana 46410 Dear Physicians, This envelope contains my December 10 posting to the Internet titled 'Letter to the Lake County Medical Society'. After reading it, I hope all of you will consider it an open invitation to appear with me, at your convenience, on my AT & T cable television program 'Alternative Health Choices'. On this program I describe possible treatments for - Cancer, AIDS, Alcoholism, Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS), Macular degeneration and Leukemia. You may agree or disagree with what I have to say, and your appearance on my program will afford you the opportunity to express your opinion. The National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE, contains over 11,000,000 citations. MEDLINE, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed, states (UI: 91310113): " ...Recently, we found thioproline in various cooked foods, including cod and dried shiitake mushrooms... " MEDLINE states (UI: 88098591): " The charge distribution of anti-cancer molecules 4-thiazolidine-carboxylic acid (j.s.r. - Thioproline)... " MEDLINE states (UI: 80098547) that this result was achieved after 'pure' Thioproline had been administered to Cancer patients in Spain in 1979 - " .....Histological studies showed involution and transformation into low-grade malignancies and disappearance of evidence of cancer. " Dear Physicians, I hope you agree with me - In addition to their present treatment, all Cancer patients should be told, immediately, to start consuming the Shiitake mushroom in one form or another (the mushrooms themselves or 'MGN-3' or 'Esteem SHARK plus' cartilage, etc.). However, I think the very best course of action would be for you to obtain 98% to 99% pure Thioproline from Alfa-Aesar in Massachusetts and administer it to your Cancer patients. Physicians, again, I welcome all of you to appear with me, at your convenience, on my television program. Yours truly, S. , 5086 Sunrise Avenue, Portage, Indiana 46368, (219) 763-1933 Copies to all those those listed in the December 10 letter. End of text 2. Moonbeam asked me this question - " Hi, Shiitake also contains beta glucan. When Dr. Mansell injected beta glucan into tumors they shrank within 5 days. How much have you read on beta glucan? moonbeam " and Tom Roper provided me with this information - " Maitake D Fraction Shari Lieberman, Ph.D., presented findings on the effectiveness of maitake (Grifola frondosa), both powdered whole mushrooms and the maitake D fraction extract, in the prevention and treatment of cancer. The main mechanism seems to be the activation of the natural killer cells by the beta glucans present in maitake. Animal studies show tremendous effectiveness in tumor growth inhibition (up to 98%) when maitake D fraction is used in combination with half the usual dose of chemotherapy. A Japanese study did show extended survival when maitake was used together with chemotherapy. Concurrent use of maitake also greatly lessened the side effects of chemotherapy. An American pilot study on the chemotherapy/D fraction combination in advanced breast cancer and prostate cancer patients has recently been granted permission by the FDA. " More information relative to Lentinan, a beta glucan, taken from ADVANCES IN APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY, VOLUME 39: Page 154: " ...Reputed antitumor components vary in chemical nature, but the most important may prove to be a polysaccharide that acts as a host defense potentiator. " Page 156: " Ikekawa and co-workers (1968, 1969) found that an i.p. injection of an aqueous extract of L.edodes greatly inhibited growth of tumors (81%) arising from sarcoma 180 ascites cells implanted in Swiss albino mice. The active principle, a polysaccharide, was isolated and named lentinan by Chihara and co-workers (1969, 1970), who observed complete regression with no toxicity..... " Page 158: " 2. General Mode of Action - Lentinan appears to be a potent host defense potentiator which improves homeostasis of the host against cancer or infection (Chihara et al., 1989). It has no direct cytotoxicity to target cells; its action is host mediated. It activates the classical and alternative pathways of the complement system and augments the responsiveness of the host through maturation, differentiation, and proliferation of lymphoid and other physiologically important cells. The fact that lentinan is a T-cell-oriented adjuvant, in which macrophages play some part, distinguishes it from other well-known immunopotentiators (Hamuro et al., 1976). Although it does not specifically accelerate the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) from helper T cells, it potentiates the induction of different types of anti-tumor effector cells, such as killer T cells, NK cells, and cytotoxic macrophages (Chihara, 1983; Chihara et al., 1987). The effector cells may act either selectively or nonselectively on target cells. Various kinds of bioactive serum factors appear immediately after the administration of lentinan, most induced by macrophages. They act on lymphocytes, hepatocytes, vascular endothelial cells, or synovial fibroblasts, causing the many host defense reactions associated with inflammation and immunity. " Page 159: " Maeda and Chihara (1973a) found that lentinan activated the anti-tumor effect of peritoneal-exudate cells in rats against sarcoma 180 in vivo..... " Page 163: " Miyakoshi and co-workers (1984) indicate that lentinan can inhibit cancer in humans... " Page 163: " Lentinan has only a slightly toxic effect in in vivo application to animal models and human subjects. Page 164: " a. Combination with Other Therapeutic Agents. Badger (1984) showed that lentinan in combination with chemotherapy increased survival 50% when compared to chemotherapy alone..... " In my opinion, everyone in the world concerned about Cancer should be curious as to the name of the Lentinan product sold in Japan that has achieved this result - " ...Remarkable life span prolongation has been achieved in patients with advanced and recurrent stomach, colorectal, and breast cancer... " j.s.r. Copies to Professor Schally and Dr. Folkman and all those listed in my December 10 posting 'Letter to the Lake County Medical Society'.
