Ratcliffe , Jr., M.D. Lake County Medical Society Director Executive Vice President, CEO 1205 West Lincoln Highway National Institutes of Health American Medical Association Suite 7A 1 Center Drive 515 North State Street Merrillville, Indiana 46410 Building 1, Room 126 Chicago, Illinois 60610 Bethesda, land 20892 execsec1@... Dear Dr. Varmus, Dr. and the Lake County Medical Society, My Post Script contains the complete letter of Ms. Helena Wojtczak that describes the plight of Mr. n . n has cancer, and one of Helena's sentences details its seriousness: " ...We were reeling in shock at horror at this, then when he had tests it turns out he has secondaries in his lungs (small cell) and has now been given 12 months to live... " Dr. Varmus, Dr. and the Lake County Medical Society, I think that the anti-Cancer chemical, Thioproline ('Tac'), should be made immediately available to n's physician for the following reasons (bold face emphasis is mine.) - 1. In March, 1979, Gosalvez stated that Thioproline was unique ( " One compound out of 500... " ) and speculated that Thioproline " ...could represent the first non-cytotoxic anticancer agent which has the plasma membrane as target. " 2. Later in 1979, Dr. Gosalvez and Dr. Brugarolas achieved these anti-Cancer results with Thioproline in a Spanish clinical trial; reported in 'The Lancet', January 12, 1980, pages 68 to 70: " ...Definite signs of activity were observed...in other solid tumours, such as breast, renal, ovary, thyroid, and parotid cancer. " " ...Histological studies showed involution and transformation into low-grade malignancies and disappearance of evidence of cancer. " 3. In 1980, the biochemist, T.F. Slater, wrote a letter to 'The Lancet' in which he stated: " Thus there is a lot of published information relevant to the current interesting work on thioproline. In particular, the stimulation in vivo of lipid peroxidation, with the subsequent formation of unsaturated aldehydic products, offers exciting possibilities for the in situ formation of thiazolidine adducts, especially since lipid peroxidation is reduced in many experimental tumours so that endogenous production of such unsaturated aldehydes is very much decreased by that route. " 4. In 1983 the research of Smeyers and Huertas labelled Thioproline as containing 'anti-cancer molecules'. 5. In the past decade the Nobel Prize winner, Professor V. Schally, and his colleagues incorporated Thioproline into compounds ('BN antagonists') and published these statements: 1994 - " ...BN antagonists such as RC-3950-II (j.s.r. - contains Thioproline) may have important therapeutic applications for the treatment of various malignancies such as prostatic, gastric, and pancreatic cancer, small cell lung carcinoma, and other tumors. " 1997 - " ...These highly potent cytotoxic analogs of BN have been designed as targeted anti-tumor agents for the treatment of various cancers that possess receptors for BN/GRP. " 6. Like all chemotherapeutic agents, Thioproline is somewhat toxic (however - the pain reliever, Tylenol, is more toxic!). 7. My research has demonstrated that vitamin C neutralizes the toxicity of Thioproline. This fact would enable n to swallow 'mega-doses' (perhaps 40 mg/kg. daily) of Thioproline. He would not have to endure any painful intravenous or intramuscular injections. 8. The procedure for n's physician to follow is described on pages 7 to 9 (left hand side pagination) of The Cure for Cancer? www.cures for cancer.ws/cures for cancer/tac-cure.htm. 98% to 99% pure Thioproline is available at the following locations in the United States - Alfa Aesar Consult Alfa Aesar Online Catalog A Matthey Catalog Company, Inc. Responses were obtained at several dose levels mainly in epidermoid carcinoma of the head and neck with pulmonary metastases. Histological studies showed involution and transformation into low-grade malignancies and disappearance of evidence of cancer. " Dr. Varmus, Dr. and the Lake County Medical Society, can you think of any reason why Mr. n should be denied access to Thioproline? The remainder of this letter is a summary of the research that I have been posting to The Internet since September 10, 2000. I have prepared a Table of Contents - A. More information about Thioproline B. Evidence that seems to indicate that an important anti-Cancer discovery about Thioproline was either inadvertently or willfully deleted from the U.S. Government's own medical website 'MedLine'. C. Chemical procedures by which Thioproline (The cure for Cancer?) and L-MTCA (The cure for AIDS?) can be prepared. D. More information about L-MTCA E. Information that might help problem drinkers F. Information that might help Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) patients G. Information that might help Macular degeneration (vision loss) patients H. The cure for leukemia: d-penicillamine plus copper & vitamin C? A. More information about Thioproline (The cure for Cancer?) 1. Would it be difficult to repeat the 1979 Spanish clinical trial in which Thioproline generated anti-Cancer results? Not at all! The parameters of the 1979 trial were fairly simple (page 68, 'The Lancet', January 12, 1980) - " The criteria used in the selection of patients were: pathological diagnosis of advanced cancer resistant to treatment; physical condition allowing outpatient care; measurable tumour for evaluation of the response; no other cancer treatment in the 4 weeks before, or during thioproline treatment; and informed consent by patients. " " Clinical assessment included history and examination, measurement of tumours, chest X-ray, ECG, complete blood counts, liver profile, and urine analysis. These assessments were made before treatment began, and every 1-3 weeks during treatment. " In the 1979 trial some patients were injected with Thioproline, 20 to 40 mg/kg. daily, and some patients swallowed it, 5 mg/kg. daily. I have discovered a unique fact of nature - vitamin C affords phenomenal protection against the toxicity of Thioproline. Consequently, a new clinical trial could determine what the effect would be on Cancer patients if they swallowed 'mega-doses' of Thioproline and vitamin C; in my opinion, the 'mega-dose' amount of Thioproline could be as high as 40 mg/kg. daily (maybe more!). This is not to say that the patients would have to begin immediately with a 40 mg/kg. daily dosage of Thioproline - On day 1 the patients would swallow 10 mg/kg. of Thioproline; if no problems develop - On day 2 the patients would swallow 15 mg/kg. of Thioproline; if no problems develop - On day 3 the patients would swallow 20 mg/kg. of Thioproline; if no problems develop - On day 4 the patients would swallow 25 mg/kg. of Thioproline; if no problems develop - On day 5 the patients would swallow 30 mg/kg. of Thioproline; if no problems develop - On day 6 the patients would swallow 35 mg/kg. of Thioproline; if no problems develop - On day 7 the patients would swallow 40 mg/kg. of Thioproline. Thus, within a week, administrators of the Cancer clinical trial could determine whether patients could safely swallow 40 mg/kg. daily of Thioproline (along with their vitamin C). Further details can be found on pages 7 to 9 (left hand side pagination) of The Cure for Cancer?. My estimate of a 12 day duration is too optimistic; however, within this time, remission was seen in the case of Helen's brother (esophageal cancer) and Mr. Mike Fernandez (prostate cancer); see pages 26 to 28 of The Cure for Cancer? for details. 2. Do 'mega-doses' of Thioproline and vitamin C have any harmful side effects? No. Helen's brother and Mr. Mike Fernandez did not experience any, and Mr. Jerry Rollins, a member of cures for canceregroups, described his experience thusly in a September 5, 1999 posting: " So....for better or worse, I'm finished with the 12 day ' Cure'. Except for the closely scheduled regimen it was not harmful in anyway I can as yet determine. No kidney aches, bladder strain, headache, upset stomach....as a matter of fact I don't see how it can do me any good if there's not some suffering. Isn't that a fact of life...no gain without pain? Tuesday I'll have a PSA test so we'll all see. Won't it be fantastic if I can stop cantron, etc. and not worry about debilitating hormone followed by chemo. Of course the '12 day' is chemo but apparently a harmless and quick one. It's nice to know there are many out there monitoring my progress. If it's worked all I'll need to is take what's necessary to keep my immune system in top shape. Best, JR " Unfortunately, Jerry was not helped by 'The Gutierrez/ Procedure for the treatment of Cancer'; however, Helen's brother and Mike Fernandez were. This is why there is such a need for a scientifically controlled clinical trial. 3. Does the vitamin C aspect of my procedure have a medical name? Yes it does - 'Ascorbic Acid Flush'; see page 12 of The Cure for Cancer? for details; it includes this passage from Prescription for NUTRITIONAL HEALING (page 539) by F. Balch, M.D.: " Because vitamin C (ascorbic acid) promotes the healing of wounds and protects the body from bacterial infection, allergens and other pollutants, it is often beneficial to flush the body with ascorbic acid. This therapy can help treat chemical allergies and chemical poisoning, arsenic and radiation poisoning, influenza, and sprains, and it can help prevent other illnessess, including cancer and AIDS. " 4. Do any foods contain Thioproline? Yes, the Shiitake mushroom contains Thioproline; access 'MedLine' (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed), type in 91310113, click on to 'Tsuda M': " ...Recently, we found thioproline in various cooked foods, including cod and dried shiitake mushrooms... " 5. Is Thioproline the most active constituent of the Shiitake mushroom? Yes it is - a. Access the website, geocities.com/HotSprings/villa/1706/shiitake.html b. Refer to the table, 'Constituyentes Activos en el Shiitake' c. Look at the last entry of the table and you will see that Thioproline (Thioprolina) has the highest designation (Fuente) - 27. 6. Do any other mushrooms contain Thioproline? No, they don't. MedLine contains over 11 million citations. If you type in the word combination thioproline mushrooms you will see that only one abstract appears, the 'Tsuda M' one from which I took this quote: " ...Recently, we found thioproline in various cooked foods, including cod and dried shiitake mushrooms... " 7. Does traditional medicine recognize the potential anti-Cancer effectiveness of mushrooms? Yes, it does; access MedLine; type in 97264777; click on to 'Chang R'; these words appear in the abstract (The research originated at the Department of Medicine, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.): " Edible mushrooms such as shiitake may have important salutary effects on health or even in treating disease. " " .....Although the data for this functional food class are not as strong as those for other functional foods such as cruciferous vegetables, because of their potential usefulness in preventing or treating serious health conditions as cancer, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and hypercholesterolemia, functional mushrooms deserve further serious investigation. " 8. In China and Japan, what have been the anti-Cancer results of using the Shiitake mushroom? " ...in China and Japan, shiitake mushrooms have been used for hundreds of years as cancer-fighting agents... " ; " Shiitake mushroom is believed to counteract stomach and cervical cancers...in October 1985...a new product containing the extract from shiitake mushroom had been approved by the Japanese government as an anti-cancerous agent. " ; the effectiveness of the shiitake mushroom " in treating cancer has been reported in a joint study by the Medical Department of Koibe University and Nippon Kinoko Institute in Japan... " ; " ...And extracts from Shiitake mushroom are found to have anti-cancer properties. In fact, in Japan, extracts from this mushroom are one of the leading prescription treatments for cancer. " B. Evidence that seems to indicate that an important anti-Cancer discovery about Thioproline was either inadvertently or willfully deleted from the U.S. Government's own medical Internet website 'MedLine'. MedLine is the Internet resource of the National Library of Medicine. There are over 11 million citations in MedLine. Gosalvez wrote 4 articles in 1979 that are cited in MedLine - 1. January, 1979 - " Inhibition of sodium-potassium-activated adenosine 5' triphosphatase and ion transport by adriamycin. " 2. February, 1979 - " A possible pathogenic mechanism for the induction of rotenone tumours. " 3. February, 1979 - " Restoration of 'contact inhibition' in tumour cells in tissue culture by treatment with thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid. " 4. May, 1979 - " Early clinical trial with quelamycin. " However, Gosalvez wrote a 5th article in 1979, and it is not cited in MedLine. A little bit of history - The cancer research of Gosalvez had been " Supported by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, contract NO1-CM-53792. " At the time he was a researcher at the Bioquimica Experimental, Clinical Puerta de Hierro, Madrid-35, Spain. The result of Gosalvez' research was published in the March, 1979, issue of the 'Proceedings of the American Association for Cancer Research', volume 20, page 17; title of article - " THE PLASMA MEMBRANE AS A TARGET IN ANTICANCER CHEMOTHERAPY " . These words of Gosalvez appear in 'AACR ABSTRACTS, 1979', No. 68: " .....The screening included the test of compounds: 1) in cell capping of immuno-globulins; 2) in the differentiation of the mold Dictyostelium discoideum and 3) in the restoration of contact inhibition of Hela cells in tissue culture. One compound out of 500, thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (j.s.r. - Thioproline), was active in the three screening steps and was able to restore contact inhibition in Hela cells in tissue culture. This compound has been brought to the clinics in Spain in patients of advanced metastasic progressing cancer under the name of Norgamem. Norgamem could represent the the first non-cytotoxic anticancer agent which has the plasma membrane as target. " To double check and confirm the fact that this 5th article of Gosalvez is not contained in MedLine, type in the title of the article, 'THE PLASMA MEMBRANE AS A TARGET IN ANTICANCER CHEMOTHERAPY', into 'Search PubMed for', click on to 'Go', and these words will appear - " No items found " . The subsequent clinical trial in Spain, in the latter half of 1979, revealed these results after Thioproline had been administered to human beings with Cancer - " .....Definite signs of activity were observed.....in other solid tumours, such as breast, renal, ovary, thyroid, and parotid cancer. " " .....Histological studies showed involution and transformation into low-grade malignancies and disappearance of evidence of cancer. " The aforementioned words appear in one of the world's foremost medical journals 'The Lancet', January 12, 1980, pages 68 to 70. C. Chemical procedures by which Thioproline (The cure for Cancer?) and L-MTCA (The cure for AIDS?) can be prepared. Could Cancer and AIDS be cured by these 'chemical cousins'? Cancer: Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid known as 'Thioproline'. AIDS: L-2-Methylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid known as 'L-MTCA'. Thioproline is composed of formaldehyde (1/2) and L-cysteine (1/2) L-MTCA is composed of acetaldehyde (1/2) and L-cysteine (1/2). Both Tac and L-MTCA are chemically simple to prepare; however, the procedures could be dangerous - Thioproline - Ratner first described its preparation in the journal of the 'American Chemical Society', January, 1937, page 203: " Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic Acid. - The cysteine hydrochloride from 30 g. of cystine was dissolved in 100 cc. of water; 22 cc. of commercial 40% formaldehyde (1.1 mole) was added, and the mixture allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. On the addition of 25 cc. of pyridine, crystals soon separated. The whole was diluted with 50 cc. of alcohol and filtered. The product (28.2 g.) was recrystallized from hot water. The resulting long, colorless needles, which melt with decomposition at 196-197 degrees, are insoluble in alcohol, somewhat soluble in cold water, readily soluble in hot water, in acid and alkali. " * HAZARD ALERT: Formaldehyde is an alleged carcinogen and a strong irritant; avoid breathing vapor and avoid skin contact. Use a fume hood. L-MTCA - This description is found in the 'Journal of Nutrition', Volume 66, 1958, page 610: " L-2-Methylthiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid was synthesized by a modification of the procedure described by Cook and Heilbron (THE CHEMISTRY OF PENICILLIN). Six grams of L-cysteine were dissolved in 15 ml of hot water and the pH of the solution was adjusted to 2.5 with hydrochloric acid. Five milliliters of freshly distilled acetaldehyde were added and the reaction mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for several hours. The solution was then concentrated 'in vacuo' to a heavy syrup. The product was precipitated by the addition of absolute ethanol and collected on a sintered glass funnel. The yield, after recrystallization from 95% ethanol, was 2.6 gm. The melting point was 162-163 degrees, in agreement with the value reported by Cook and Heilbron. " * HAZARD ALERT: Hydrochloric acid is highly toxic by ingestion or inhalation; severely corrosive to skin and eyes. * HAZARD ALERT: Acetaldehyde is a suspected carcinogen; highly flammable; toxic (narcotic); dangerous fire and explosion risk. Cool before opening. Open bottle slowly under a hood. D. More information about L-MTCA (The cure for AIDS?) 1. To repeat: L-MTCA is composed of acetaldehyde (1/2) and L-cysteine (1/2). 2. In the test tube, acetaldehyde can cripple HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. This fact is confirmed by both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). 3. Japanese researchers have shown that a compound containing a form of acetaldehyde (diethylacetal) had severe consequences upon the 'gag proteins' of HIV; access MedLine, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed: a. Type in 90121218, click on to 'Tashiro A', the abstract concludes: " .....In this system, N-Myr-Goa substantially inhibited more than 90% of the N-Myristoylation of p17 gag protein produced in the HIV-1-infected MT-4 cells. These results suggest that the N-myristoylation of p17 gag protein of HIV-1 may be essential in its structural assembly or maturation. b. Type in 89033966, click on to 'Shoji S', the abstract's last sentence states: " ...Of the N-Myr-compounds tested, N-Myr-GOA remarkably prevented the myristoylation of p19gag and p17gag... " c. N-Myr-Goa is 'N-myristoyl glycinal diethylacetal'. 'Diethylacetal', a form of acetaldehyde, has a Molecular weight of 118.18 and is less soluble than acetaldehyde (Molecular weight 44.05); 'pure' acetaldehyde would be the most effective agent to cause the 'anti-myristoylation of HIV's gag proteins, namely - p17, p41 & Pr55. 4. The toxicity of acetaldehyde can be neutralized by L-Cysteic acid.H20 and vitamin C (ascorbic acid); refer to " Protective Action of Ascorbic Acid and Sulfur Compounds against Acetaldehyde Toxicity: Implications in Alcoholism and Smoking " by Dr. Herbert Sprince el al, 'Agents and Actions', vol. 5/2 (1975). 5. Could the cure for AIDS be the combination of L-MTCA & L-Cysteic acid.H20 & vitamin C? 6. I cannot locate any source in the world that presently makes or sells L-MTCA; however, Sigma-Aldrich of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, (800) 771-6737, stocks a product that is closely related to it - 2,2-DIMETHYL-THIAZOLIDINE-4-CARBOXYLIC ACID Sigma-Aldrich product S71006 L-2-METHYLTHIAZOLIDINE-4-CARBOXYLIC ACID L-MTCA. I am sure that Sigma-Aldrich could manufacture L-MTCA if it is, indeed, the cure for AIDS. E. Information that might help problem drinkers - 1. What is the most important element that a habitual drinker of alcohol should include their diet? Zinc - You always read that zinc should be included in the diet of a drinker; however, thus far no one has ever highlighted the reason. Sometimes I think that only I and the Encyclopaedia Britannica are aware of this fact: " As absorbed alcohol is passed through the liver by the circulating blood it is acted on by ADH (alcohol dehydrogenase), a zinc-containing enzyme found chiefly in the liver cells..... " , Encyclopaedia Britannica, Macropaedia, 1974 Edition, Volume 1, page 438. If anyone finds any reference to this particular passage in all of the literature about alcoholism, would you please let me know about it. Isn't it logical to assume that a dietary deficiency of zinc might be THE primary precursor to the development of alcoholism if a person is a regular consumer of alcohol? 2. To function properly, zinc needs vitamin B-6. 3. Alcohol metabolizes (changes) into the poison acetaldehyde; how to avoid pancreatitis: a. " Pyridoxal phosphate (vitamin B-6) is normally protected from degeneration by its binding to the amine group of lysine residues of proteins, including serum proteins and hemaglobin. Acetaldehyde may, by binding preferentially to these residues, displace pyridoxal phosphate and result in its increased destruction, and abnormally low blood levels of this co-enzyme. " b. " Pancreatitis. the pancreas, a long slender organ that secretes insulin and digestive enzymes, lies below and to the left of the stomach. An inflammation of this organ, or pancreatitis, has been produced by diets deficient in vitamin B-6. c. The poisonous part of alcohol, acetaldehyde, unnaturally depletes the body's supply of vitamin B-6. d. If you are a habitual drinker of alcohol you better include in your diet an above average amount of vitamin B-6; if you don't, you could develop pancreatitis. 4. Importance of vitamin C - " ...the liver depends on vitamin C to produce an enzyme - alcohol dehydrogenase - that helps usher alcohol out of the bloodstream. The less vitamin C there is, the longer the body stays polluted. 5. More information about vitamin B-6 - a. " It would be a good idea, too, to add vitamin B-6 or pyridoxine to the components of this antiacetaldehyde nutritional packet. Since pyridoxine plays a part in the metabolic conversion of amino acids, even a marginal deficiency of this vitamin might slow down the conversion of sulfur-containing amino acids. b. " Pyridoxine (vitamin B-6) is water soluble and is excreted by the body within 8 hours of intake. It is necessary for the reproduction of antibodies and red blood cells. It is believed to be important in the proper absorption of another B vitamin, B-12. Some doctors suggest higher doses for pregnant or nursing women... " c. " Aside from a thiamin deficiency, excessive drinking can also cause a deficiency of vitamin B-6, a nutrient needed to transmit nerve impulses. Doctors report that even a mild deficiency of vitamin B-6 alters brain waves and that a severe deficiency can cause convulsive seizures. " d. " Pyridoxine, or vitamin B-6, seems to be destroyed by alcohol. Over 50 percent of those who drink excessively seem to have deficiencies. " I think it would be a good idea to print a third warning on all containers of alcoholic beverages - (3) PROPER METABOLISM OF ALCOHOL REQUIRES THE INGESTION OF ABOVE AVERAGE AMOUNTS OF ZINC, VITAMIN B-6 AND VITAMIN C. Powter's wonderful book, SOBER...AND STAYING THAT WAY, should also be consulted; on page 192 she states: " L-glutamine: One of the many amino acids found in proteins, l-glutamine has an incredible reputation among recovering alcoholics. Many report that taken supplementally, the free form (that is, when it is alone and not part of proteins) of l-glutamine can stop the cravings for alcohol within minutes. " F. Information that might help Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) patients - 1. " Some researchers believe that so-called familial ALS (that is, inherited ALS) is caused by a defective gene that prevents the body from producing a normal amount of an enzyme called superoxide dismutase (SOD). " 2. " What really sets this powdered barley juice apart from other food supplememts is the presence of many usable enzymes and chlorophyll. The anti-aging enzyme 'superoxide dismutase (SOD)', is one of these. Dr. Cutler, a biologist at the National Institute of Aging has shown that life-span is directly proportional to the amount of SOD contained in the cells. Anti-oxidants such as SOD protect the body from toxic free radicals. " 3. Could powdered barley juice retard, or at least slow down, the damage done to spinal neurons and thus lessen the severity of Lou Gehrig's Disease? I submitted this idea to the ALS Foundation. They had never heard of it before. G. Information that might help Macular degeneration (vision loss) patients - 1. " Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), extracts have been used to stem deteriorating vision in patients by maintaining adequate blood flow to the retina... " 2. " Herbalists believe ginkgo may.....help reduce retinal damage from macular degeneration, a cause of blindness..... " 3. " Many older people exhibit deficiencies in zinc, which normally appears in high concentrations in the retina, particularly in the macula..... " Could an above average amount of Ginkgo biloba and zinc in the diet help to alleviate the severity of macular degeneration? H. The cure for leukemia: d-penicillamine plus copper & vitamin C ? Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) - If you type penicillamine leukemia into MedLine you will find that there are 24 entries that are devoted to this subject. I have found the following one to be the most interesting; the unique identifier number is 96273151; I have taken one sentence from it: " .....Human acute myelogenous leukemia cells were especially sensitive to PSH plus copper..... " PSH is d-penicillamine. A relationship exists between Penicillamine and Thiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (Thioproline). The 1999 edition of the PHYSICIANS' DESK REFERENCE (PDR) states on page 1766 that penicillamine " reacts readily with formaldehyde or acetone to form a thiazolidine-carboxylic acid. I will state unequivocally that the 'thiazolidine-carboxylic acid' that the PDR mentions is the same as Thioproline. I challenge the scientific and medical community of the world to refute me. Since vitamin C (ascorbic acid) protects against the toxicity of Thioproline, might it also protect against the toxicity of penicillamine? On about October 12, 1999, I called Dr. Cathcart's office; I believe Dr. Cathcart is a former associate of Dr. Linus ing; Dr. Cathcart's website is www.orthomed.com and it reads: 'ORTHOMOLECULAR MEDICINE VITAMIN C ROBERT F. CATHCART, M.D.' and left this question - " Does vitamin C afford protection against the toxicity of penicillamine? " The next day Dr. Cathcart's secretary called me and said that " Dr. Cathcart doesn't have any personal experience with what you mentioned, but in theory he could see how vitamin C could protect against penicillamine. " 1. A scientific fact - Human acute myelogenous leukemia are especially sensitive to d- penicillamine plus copper. 2. A scientific opinion - Vitamin C could possibly protect against the toxicity of penicillamine. 3. A scientific hypothesis - 'Mega-doses' of d-penicillamine plus copper and vitamin C will cure chronic myelogenous leukemia. Yours truly, and Margaret H. , jsr1936@..., P.O. Box H, Hobart, IN 46342, (219) 763-1933 Post Script A. The complete, unedited letter of Helena Wojtczak posted to The Internet resource, cures for canceregroups, on November 3, 2000; subject title - 'Now desperate': Hi all I wrote in to the list a few weeks back about my boyfriend, n , a successful 35 yr old classical recitalist (organ, harpsichord, piano) who has been diagnosed with a malignant carcoma in his elbow and they are going to amputate his arm. We were reeling in shock at horror at this, then when he had tests it turns out he has secondaries in his lungs (small cell) and has now been given 12 months to live. He was giving concerts all over the world until July and we cannot beleive this is happening to us. He is now in hospital in London, 2 hours from me, watching the man opposite die, slowly and noisily, of the same lung cancer. They intend to give him the strongest possible dose of the strongest possible chemo and we are both terrified of it. He is already weak and I don;t know how we will cope when his immune system is destroyed. We have heard many stories of people who died after chemo and wished they had not spent their last few months ill in bed. In fact, we have more stories and anecdotes to last us a lifetime. All second and third hand of course. I read all the " cures for cancer " emails avidly and print many of them and take them to him. He wants *of course* to take an alternative cure BUT WHICH? There are so many things! We are both on welfare and have very little money. What savings we had has been blown on various " cures " whose adherents pushed them onto us including Essiac, wormwood, green walnut tincture, vitamin C. two different Zappers, cloves and cinnamon, Astragulus (?), and god knows what else. We are now getting to the end of our resources. He also has to purchase special food every day, as the hospital food is disgusting: white sugar, white flour, white rice, overboiled frozen diced vegetables, inedible lasagne, packet soups; slop, basically, nutritionally void. He is managing to buy pots of vegetable salads and fruit from nearby sandwich shops etc as he is allowed out. When the chemo starts on Monday he will not even be allowed out so I will have to go there every day and feed him properly. It is a disgrace that cancer patients are being fed inedible rubbisih that I would not even give my pet rats! A wealthy concert promoter who adores n's playing might be persuaded to fund a cure if we can *prove* it will work for him. This rich man is very set against alternative treatments and begs n to have the chemo. However, I think that if we get proof ie personal testimony from, say at least a dozen people he might be persuaded to pay. But no-one will offer us any proof. In fact, it is made almost impossible to ask for proof, people seem to be totally offended that you don't believe their claims. They all want our (borrowed) money, in return for which we get third or fourth hand anecdotal " testimony " . In some cases the only person to be cured is the same one trying to sell you something. One man relieved my boyfriend of his last L500 savings this way. I feel sick to my stomach that people are happy to jump on the bandwagon and get desperate people, fighting for their lives, to pay money for rubbish. It seems that almost anyone can just whip up some " potion " and sell it to the desperate for a massive profit and there is no comeback since in many cases the victim will die and the charlatan can just laugh all the way to the bank. The latest miracle cure he has been " offered " is oxygen therapy in Finchley, London. This will take 4 weeks and cost L500 per week plus he has to purchase certain items and pay L100 a week for accommodation. This is a vast amount of money representing 6 months of our joint income. No proof has been offered that oxygen therapy will work. If he delays the chemo for another 4 weeks, the cancer could spread and get worse and he will be even iller and have even less chance of survival. We have now reached to the point of utter desperation and don;t know which way to turn. He is pleading with me to help him choose - chemo or alternatives? I am getting totally distraught with this. We have discussued it with friends and of course some feel strongly one way or another, more or less evenly balanced, and others will make not comment. If there is anyone who can give any positive advice I would be so very grateful for it. Time is running out. Maybe noone out there can help me but I do feel a bit better for writing all this. I feel very tense and wound up with anger at the moment so please forgive me if this is reflected in this email. If anyone is interested, this is the man I am trying to save: http://business.virgin.net/artemis.agency/biog.htm love to all of your out there especially to cancer sufferers and their close ones. Life seems very cruel to us. Helena End of text - B. On November 4, I initially responded to Helena's posting; subject title 'Now desperate/MGN-3': Helena According to the manufacturer, MGN-3: " Discovered in Japan, MGN-3 is a rice bran complex which has been modified using enzymes from the edible Shiitake mushrooms to produce a compound called Arabinoxylane..... " The Shiitake mushroom is one of the only foods in nature that contains the chemical Thioproline. 1. In March, 1979, an article indicated that Thioproline was unique ( " One compound out of 500... " ), and it was speculated that Thioproline " .....could represent the first non-cytotoxic anticancer agent which has the plasma membrane as target. " 2. Later in 1979, Thioproline achieved these anti-Cancer results in a clinical trial (reported in 'The Lancet') - " .....Definite signs of activity were observed.....in other solid tumours, such as breast, renal, ovary, thyroid, and parotid cancer. " .....Histological studies showed involution and transformation into low-grade malignancies and disappearance of evidence of cancer. " 3. In 1983, Thioproline was labelled as containing " anti-cancer molecules " . 4. In 1994 and 1997, a Nobel Prize winner published very favorable reports about the anti-Cancer success achieved in the laboratory with compounds containing Thioproline; for instance, they: 1994 - " .....may have important therapeutic applications for the treatment of various malignancies such as prostatic, gastric, and pancreatic cancer, small cell lung carcinoma, and other tumors. " 1997 - " .....have been designed as targeted anti-tumor agents for the treatment of various cancers..... " Helena, if you desire more detailed information about Thioproline, I will immediately post it to you. The cost of MGN-3 is about $60.00 for 50 capsules (250 mg.). Call 800-881-3598. Or perhaps somebody else in this eGroup could tell you about a better source. End of text - C. I have written a letter, 'To Dr. Varmus, Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH)', November 7, 1999, that describes the scientific/medical effort that was made between 1980 and 1983 to take advantage of the marvelous 1979 Spanish discovery - Thioproline engendered the " .....disappearance of evidence of cancer. " Upon request, I will eMail this letter to anyone. In my opinion, the scientific community put forth a puny, paltry effort to take advantage of the Spanish anti-Cancer discovery. Consequently, the medical community settled for scanty, skimpy research in reaching its decision to abandon interest in Thioproline as a possible Cancer cure. As a result of this feeble, futile, feckless, abortive research effort, a negative light was cast upon Thioproline that the world has been doomed to live with throughout the past two decades. The 'Dr. Varmus' letter contains these poignant words of Gosalvez, the primary discoverer of the anti-Cancer potentiality of Thioproline: " .....However, reports of our later work given at scientific meetings or in the pipeline, confirm that thioproline does induce reverse transformation and that the whole concept, despite its complexities, is promising. " D. Why not repeat the 1979 Spanish clinical trial? Since November, 1997, I have been continuously imploring the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to repeat the Spanish clinical trial only this time all of the Cancer patients would swallow 'mega-doses' (perhaps 40 mg/kg. daily) of Thioproline and vitamin C. Three years have lapsed and the NIH has never definitively responded to me. Let me put things in perspective - 1. The initial research of Gosalvez was " Supported by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, contract NO1-CM-53792. " 2. The clinical trial was conducted by Gosalvez and Brugarolas at two established medical facilities in Spain. 3. The data was gathered together and reported in one of the world's foremost medical journals 'The Lancet'. 4. Among the findings - Thioproline ('Tac') caused the " ...disappearance of evidence of cancer. " I am simply asking that the trial be repeated, but this time vitamin C would be added to the equation. E. My latest bulletin (8 " x11 " ) - Doctors should tell - 1. Cancer patients about the acid 'Tac'; in 1979 it caused the " ...disappearance of evidence of cancer. " 2. AIDS patients about the acid 'L-MTCA'; it contains a chemical that cripples HIV, the AIDS virus. 3. Leukemia patients - Research reveals " leukemia cells were especially sensitive to d-penicillamine... " 4. Alcoholics about glutamine, zinc, vitamins B-6 & C. 5. Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) patients about SOD. 6. Macular degeneration (vision loss) patients about Ginkgo biloba and zinc. Doctors and everybody are invited to my program - 'Alternative Health Choices'. The program (1/2 hour) is taped Saturday mornings and is shown on AT & T cable T.V.
