Help! Question on Health Insurance billing?

Hi Friends,

I have a question. My son is 24 years old, and DD. He works very part time,

has Medicare and Medicaid. I also cover him on my health insurance as a

" Disabled Adult Child. " Starting last November I started getting billed the

family rate ($520) AND the additional $134 for my son. I have called my

insurance carrier, (UHC) they think it's an error, but are not sure. Would

someone who has the same type set up let me know if they have been billed the

additional charge (supposedly because he's eligible for Medicare)? I think and

hope this has to be wrong!

Hi Kay,

Health insurance varies greatly, even within the same provider.

I'm hoping someone else will comment on Medicare. (I know that for Medicaid,

you always bill any other insurance first.) If your son doesn't receive

Medicare, but the insurance thinks he's eligible, I'd ask some questions. How

do they know he'd qualify? Will they eliminate this extra fee while you go file

for this?

I'd start by leaning on UHC to explain why the billing suddenly increased and

what the $134 is for.

If they don't call this an error, your best case is to point out that your son

has been declared by them to be coverable as a " Disabled Adult Child " , and ask

why such a child is not considered by them to be part of your family. It's

called a family rate!

Congrats to you for getting him covered as a disabled adult child. That can be

a big paperwork project, depending on the insurer.
