I received a list from my PAS agency which is PACT. They can provide a list and

contact information.

This sounds like a good place for to go when the time comes.

Anyone have a list in the Illinois area? I sure want to visit whatever

is available in our area for the future.

Shirley,

I just got a listing of ICF-DD's that are in IL & then saw your email.

I've got a call into the pas agent & will see if I can get a listing

for CILA's. Because I'd like to have that info, too.

Trying to get into one though, is another story.

The following I took from the March 2008 Family Support Newsletter.

" A number of capacities will be held open each month for immediately

urgent situations such as abuse, neglect and homelessness. "

I have been told by our pas agent that it's 10 throughout the whole

state of IL.

My hubby & I have a couple urgent situations at present, but it

doesn't fit THAT criteria.

I have heard that there is or will be a website that lists housing that agencies

across the state have available...I will have to look in to that unless someone

in the group has more information?

If you are looking for community living supports, it is probably best to start

with the agencies that are closest to your home, if your desire is to have your

son living nearby. If they are not able to accomodate Chris' needs or you or

are not satisfied with what they have to offer, then you go to the next

closest agency that provides community living supports.

Congrats on the birthday AND the very adult move forward of your daughter!

Nice that two good milestones were reached...You launched your daughter into her

own life... and you got to celebrate the start of a new year! All good stuff!

Re: CILA'S

You should be able to get a list from your PAS agent, also ask around.

We found a new CILA home by asking at the day program where our daughter

now goes.

A person/family has to be in pretty dire straits to get funding for

these homes, unfortunately.

Maybe when the state realizes that not only do the people living in a

CILA have a better quality of life, but it even makes more sense

economically, maybe then funding will be easier.

I visited one ICF_DD in McHenry that had alot of people, but it was

bright, clean, had lots of room, was greeted and hugged by people who

lived there and even heard the staff singing as they went in to work.

It was also set in a beautiful setting with trees, etc. I visited

another one in Chicago Heights that was dark, narrow, cramped, smelled,

had a leaking roof, had no outdoor space and had a_/ very kind staff./_

Is the difference in the places that the one in McHenry gets some

private pay support? I don't know but I'm guessing that might be the

case. The one in Chicago Heights might rely only on Medicaid payments.

It would be good if the choices weren't so different...meaning the one

in Chicago Heights should be at least as bright and spacious as the one

in McHenry, not to mention that a person needs some outdoor space, some

nature, a back yard at least.

Thank-you to everyone who shares here. The human stories are just as

helpful (if not more so), as the technical information.

Ellen K. (PS, I just had my 55th. birthday this past Sunday and my

daughter moved into her CILA and new day program this past Monday and

Tuesday. What a birthday present!)

Happy Birthday. I am told that PACT will give me this info but I am still

waiting for it. I just thought maybe someone has already visited a few places

or has a list to share. I wouldn't mind visiting on my own even just a drive

by. There is no urgency today but you never know what tomorrow brings. It

should not be a big secret, everyone should be able to visit these living

centers anytime. Thanks. Shirley

I have worked in an ICF/DD as a direct care staff, I was a program

manager of a Day Program, and I currently work with CILA's so I have

seen, first hand, alot of the different housing model's in action. I

have to say that I do not prefer any model over the other. Each home

is very different. I don't think that you can make a general blanket

statement about all ICF/DD's or all CILA's. I have seen ICF/DD's

that have all of their resident's go to bed at 8:00 every night and I

have seen ICF/DD's that have " higher functioning " individuals that

have weeknight curfew's of 10:00*. (*NOTE: there are restrictions to

that and the individual had to prove to be able to handle that

responsibility.) My point is that you really need to do your

homework and find a place that will accomidate your child's needs the

best! I also urge you to talk to the staff that work at those homes

and get a good feel for them. Talk to the staff on all shift's,

especally the evening and weekend staff. They are the ones that

really spend the most time with them. Staff are the ones that really

make the experence! Also, pay attention to the other residents in

the home. Is there someone that is around the same functioning

level? It does not do any good to have 5 roomates if you are unable

to communicate with them or don't enjoy spending time with them.

Another type of CILA is called a Host Home CILA - It is actually a

private person's home that becomes licensed as a CILA. The home

owner goes through all of the same training as a staff member at any

other CILA. They are monitored by a community agency that provides

nursing services as well. These homes can have up to two

individual's living in them and they usually have their own bedroom.

I believe that these are a great alternative as well. However, just

like I said before, I don't think that their is one option that is

always better, all of the time.
