Bit of a general query here. On Boxing Day S fell and broke his arm, it is in plaster and healing OK. However we have now noticed front tooth is turning darker and can only guess that when he fell he somehow damaged the nerve and the tooth is dying off. It is his baby tooth. Off course he could not tell us his mouth hurt so we were focusing on the arm. We have appointment to see local dentist next week but wondered what to do if tooth needs removing, will a general anaesthetic(spelling?) be required and what should we look out for/question the dentist about? Regards

Hi A similar thing happened to friends of ours with an NT daughter - she had a big fall with the front tooth taking a major hit. The tooth went a little discoloured but the dentist keep it in - not sure if they did anything special but I could check for you. The tooth fell out eventually and the second tooth is normal. Here is a link to the IL Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped

HYPERLINK

of course the link says they have a back log and I don’t know how long it

will take to get an appt.

There is also a Skokie link for the Dentistry for the Handicapped HYPERLINK

This is a REALLY important topic. Dental health effects nutrition, behavior

and general well being. Thanks for bringing it up. So many of us have

children who are not able to tell us what hurts...

We use a fabulous children's dentist who will continue to see Noah even

though he is well past her typical client's age...

But then, we pay out of pocket. Does anyone have experiences using medicaid

dental services?

Sorry, due to a huge back log of over 1,000 patient applications we are not

accepting new applications at this time.

It certainly doesn't sound like IL Dentistry for the Handicapped is a place to

start. Where are those 1000 or so patients getting dental services? Probably not

getting any. I think of my Josh, who has never drank a soft drink or french fry.

Can't remember the last time he ate a piece of candy. Brushes and flosses twice

a day. And yet, he had an impacted wisdom tooth and deeply infected cavity.

Plus, severe tooth erosion from gastric acid due to undiagnosed reflux disease.

I can only assume then that the majority of the adults with DD represented on

this list are cooperative with their twice yearly dental checkups. What a

blessing!

I'll continue to research and find out what IL Medicaid dental services for

adults are and share the info when I can verify it.

And I will continue to make sure that Josh's oral health is checked twice yearly

but comprehensively and not the look, see and count method. Gas and light

sedation are counter-indicated in Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome so that really was

never an option. Visual supports, social stories, desensitization - all will

contine. Maybe I'm the one who needs a social story? : ) I feel sad and

uncomfortable restraining my adult child " for his own good " . Each time, I

prepare Josh before the visit. I offer him the option of telling me that he

needs my help. And each time, I end up holding him down as he resorts to

phyically communicating " get me out of here " .
