Hello Mel,

A message came through, with a scan of a paper, and a text message. When

attempting to get the text message, after dialing up an ISP and

communication server, nothing was on the line.

I would respectfully suggest that the communication services available to

you needf considerable improvement.

(As an aside, I am very happy with Guidant.)

It's Medtronic that my Dad has that is recalled

due to the faulty batteries. It will be 2

years in July that he's had it and it's his

first one. So it's not even 2 years old.

We met with a Rep last week and she said

Medtronic will pay for everything, and then

yesterday I found out different. They will not

pay for the hospital, doctor fees, doctor follow-up

etc. Just makes no sense to me.

I can't believe they can get away with not

paying for everything since it's a 'recall'.

If there's a recall on a part for your car

the car company doesn't say they'll replace

the part ofr free, but you have to pay the

labor fee at the dealer.

Sounds like you might need an attorney. I am concerned that Medtronic would

act in this manner. Does your dad have insurance? If so, what do they say?

Maybe Medtronic tried to get your dad's insurance to pro-rate the 2 years

and the insurance company refused. In any event, I believe Medtronic should

be responsible for the full replacement cost.

I had only had my first ICD 5 mos when it was recalled!!! There is something with the insurance and Medtronic liability -- I totally agree with you - as I said before I called my insurance and told them what was going on.... My insurance said you are our patient and will not jeopardize your health - we will pay for the surgery. The unit was not charged to the insurance. There are so many people involved, hospital, hospital staff, Docs, that Medtronic's liability would be too great - so this is how the insurance and Medtronic have worked things out.

I would call Medtronic with all your concerns - I think you will find it worth your reassurance...

Good luck and keep us posted.

My Dad has Medicare so I don't know how that will work.

Just doesn't seem right when it's a recall that any

insurance would have to pay. And beleive me, I'm not

a fan of insurance companies because where my husband

words we have not much coverage and have to argue with

them all the time pay for things. And the Reb told us

last week it will ALL be paid for, and now they are

changing the story, as I called the toll free # yesterday

and Medtronic told me only the device will be covered

by them.

I have Medicare and a secondary insurance. When my ICD was recalled in May, 2004, I received a bill from the hospital and another bill for the MD showing a balance due after Medicare and my insurance company paid their part. Medtronic eventually sent me a check for the balance due for these bills after numerous phone calls. I was told by Medtronic that they don't deal with the hospital or doctors in recall situations which didn't make sense to me. I was satisfied I didn't have to pay anything out of my pocket.

I agree with you that Medtronic should pay for everything, not just the balance after insurance pays. Something should be done about this , none of us need the aggravations that comes with these matters. We all have enough to worry about besides bills.

Good Luck!

Chris

I have a lifetimecap on my insurance. I've used up over 10% of it due to CHF,including this ICD.Now Medtronic sells ICDs which short out, and I need to burn up moreof my "insurance allotment" to cover the surgery???This makes no sense. Time to call them tomorrow, then a few consumeraction places. Thanks for the heads up.MikePlease visit the Zapper homepage athttp://www.ZapLife.org
