Guest guest
Hi Lexie, I know with the SCS you can NOT have an MRI. I had the SCS and have been through the trial for the pain pump and waiting to have the pain pump installed, I was told by my doctor that I would beable to have MRI's with the pain pump but I am still not really sure if you can. If have anymore questions feel free to E-mail me at teews2@.... Guest guest
I have a SCS and was told I couldn't have an MRI. I tore my meniscus last year and needed knee surgery. The orthopedic knew from examining me that the meniscus was torn, so she went ahead and did the surgery without an MRI. She said the tear was hidden and hard to find. I guess it would have been easier to find if she had been able to do an MRI. > > I have a few questions about the different devices available; > can you have an MRI with either device? > Can one of them treat the pain in several areas? > has anyone ever trial'ed both types? > > > thanks, > Lexie > >
Guest guest
The medtronic rep. that comes to my doctors office gave me a packet of info. before my surgery with a DVD about my SCS. Does everyone not get that packet? > > Hi all > I have been looking all over for info on the stimulator as you know my PM was not real forthcoming about giving me a lot of info on it. I found some excellent videos that Beth Isreal did on the actual procedure of implantation. They also had 2 patients there who had the procedure done and questioned them about their journey. It was real informative and would benefit anyone I feel that is thinking about getting this done. > The videos are at http://www.or-live.com > You will have to put spinal in the search then it will come up. > Kim > Kim > Freelance Copywriter and Blogger > Articles on Suite 101 > http://ghosts- hauntings.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_haunting_of_carnton_mansion > http://psychic- abilities.suite101.com/article.cfm/live_online_psychic_readings_guide > > My Blogs > > > http://dealwithchronicpain.org > http://naturalcuresreview.org > http://msfrugalmcdougal.org > > My Ehow Articles > > > http://www.ehow.com/members/starchild47.html > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Lexie  As Kathy said, you can't have an MRI with the SCS. It can treat more than one pain area. Depending on how many areas and where they are, you might need two. I have a cervical and a lumbar SCS and a pain pump. If you have any questions, please contact me.  Sue C Moderator From: Lexie <lexie@...> Subject: Re: Stimulator videos and eduational material Stimulator Date: Saturday, November 15, 2008, 3:04 AM I have a few questions about the different devices available; can you have an MRI with either device? Guest guest
lol if you have been following my saga you would know how damned impossible it is to get much of anything out of my docs office even a return call sometimes. Now I do have to see the neuro for the permanent implant after the trial so it may be I get that info when I see him or during the trial. The rep is supp to be there Tues when I get the trial. I will ask him about the dvd and stuff then. I have done all my research I have watched videos on the web on the procedure from start to finish and read all the papers I can find on this. I feel pretty comfortable about the trial even though they were remiss about giving me info. Thanks though Re: Stimulator videos and eduational material The medtronic rep. that comes to my doctors office gave me a packet of info. before my surgery with a DVD about my SCS. Guest guest
Kim  The neurosurgeon did both the trial and implant for me. The doctor still should have given you the necessary information. He should have it in his office if he's doing the trial, in my opinion. I'm glad that you got the information you need and all will go well on Tuesday.  Sue C Moderator From: kimleach <kimleachbellsouth (DOT) net> Subject: Re: Re: Stimulator videos and eduational material Stimulator@gro ups.com Date: Saturday, November 15, 2008, 8:07 PM NOPE not me I did not get anything! Guest guest
I agree Sue for sure. I have been a bit disappointed with some of the staff and stuff before now. He is a very good doctor and knows his stuff but his staff stinks! The OR nurse that set up the appt told me there would be quite a bit of teaching done Tuesday so hopefully that will be a part of it. I am not one to sit around and wait til they do something though. With my nursing exp I usually can find most stuff on the net if it is available to find. THanks for the kind thoughts I would appreciate any prayers or good thoughts or candles lit or whatever anyone could do for me Tuesday I am still a bit nervy. The last major thing I have had done was my fusion. It was a nightmare. I know the trial is not a huge deal but I am still a bit apprehensive due to a bad experience in the past. Guest guest
Kim  The important thing right now is that you have a good doctor and he knows his stuff. Of course you are nervous. Guest guest
I have to say what freaked me out the most was the fact that they wake you up once they have the leads in place to make sure they are placed properly and they make adjustments if necessary. Then they knock you back out. I don't remember either time (trial & permanent), but after my trial, the nurses in recovery kept chuckling and I finally asked what I had done or said. They said I talked everyone's leg off. They couldn't shut me up....they wouldn't tell me what I was saying but apparently it was funny. When my doctor to came to check on me, he started laughing when he said he looked forward to the permanent if this went well. He said I was very amusing! I was embarrassed to go back in to his office to have my leads checked. I don't know about everyone else, but with my trial I had to go back in 3 days for him to change my bandage and check the leads. Guest guest
LOL I can imagine! I worked in an EGD lab where we gave hypnotics to the patients. They would be in a twilight sleep. Some of them would tell us some very intersting things while under lol. Of course they never remembered a blooming thing once they came to! I would not worry about it hun. It happened to us several times a week! We would just chuckle about it and go on about our biz! It was a light part of the day but we forgot what someone said by the time an hour had gone by unless it was very memorable! I was told I would have Versed which usually knocks me for a loop! I have a pretty high tolerance to any kind of pain med etc and always have but that stuff they give you for anesthesia its like they say I am going to relax you and 2 seconds pass I am gone to wake up in recovery or going to recovery. That suits me just fine to be honest. I have had enough of being in pain during procedures. I know they will prob have to have me sort of awake enough to make sure the electrodes are placed but I just wonder how much of it I will remember. Guest guest
Lexie, The only way you can have an MRI with the pump is if you have an appt. with your pain doctor within an hour following it to have your pump checked to be sure the magnet hasn't disrupted the computer chip in the pump. The pump that I have basically covers me for any pain from the waist down. Dorothy
Guest guest
Dorothy, Now that isn't so bad! I had pretty well decided that I shouldn't have a stimulator because of the MRI thing. My disease is progressive and my back is deteriorating, as well as are most of my joints. I don't think it would be prudent to set myself in a position to not be able to MRI at all. Being able to get the programming checked would be pretty do-able as the imaging place that I have been using is in the ssame building as PM and NS doctors. Thanks, Lexie
Guest guest
LOL!! I cant even imagine what we say when we are under heavy drugs. Guest guest
They put you to sleep in the beginning? I had to be awake until they had the leads in the right spot. I would have loved to be asleep. The worst part was the pain when they were tunneling from the hip to the back. The anesthesiologist had to step out for some reason, so another one came in. I asked for med. and the fill-in anesthesiologist told " He's not cutting you'll be okay. " When the first anesthesiologist came back, she couldn't believe the pain I was in and told the doctor she thought I needed more numbing medicine. I was very thankful. I was never happier in my life than when they finally put me out. After the surgery, the first anesthesiologist asked why I hadn't asked for pain med. when I was in so much pain while she was out. Guest guest
You know I dont know how many people I have heard say this was the most painful thing that they have gone through. I had a really nice doctor do mine before my laminectomy. I had to get in some really wierd positions but it was not painful at all. I had heard others talk about how bad it was and I dreaded it. I thought afterwards how I had sweated for nothing. I must have had someone really really good at what he was doing. Guest guest
I don't think I thought a myelogram was the most painful thing I've ever had done. My worst tests/treatments are the ABG (Arterial Blood Gas) and back when I had a doctor who did the back injections without putting me to sleep (which my pain doc here does). Down in Temple TX at & White hospital, they just had you lay on your side kind of in the fetal position and jabbed you with the needles....you're supposed to have a series of 3, I made it through 2, and told the doctor I would never be back!!! Guest guest
Yes, the orginally put me to sleep, then woke me up to get the leads placed correctly, then back to dreamland. I was terrified I was going to be in excruciating pain when they woke me up but they assured me I wouldn't feel a thing....I don't even remember getting woke up!!!! So I got to sleep during all the procedures you're talking about. I probably wouldn't have done it if they told me I would be awake up to that point. That part creeped me out. They offerred to showed me how they did it and I told them I didn't want to know.....just do your magic!!!! Like I've said, I love my doctor!! Take Care, B. in TEXAS Re: Stimulator videos and eduational material They put you to sleep in the beginning? I explained that I had but the other person would give me anything. > > > > Hi all > > I have been looking all over for info on the stimulator as you know > my PM was not real forthcoming about giving me a lot of info on it.
