Guest guest
So sorry you are having a flare up. Sure sounds like your nerve did not take kindly to something that happened. I hope that it settles down quickly and you are out of severe pain soon! Well I did it this time.. ACK! I think I really ****** up this time. Let me explain, I was doing dishes last night, something didn't feel right in my back but rather than sitting I kept on moving. Within minutes it was like fireworks exploding. I feel most intense pain shooting across my lower back (L4-L5 area) then pain shooting midway down the back part of my legs. At this point, I'm screaming WHAT THE **** (use your own personal choice of wording) because the nerves in my back are flipping out and causing me a lot of pain. I limped over to the couch, sat down and there I stayed for the rest of the night with my laptop. Hours later, I slowly walked (more like limped) to the bedroom and went to sleep. After getting a good night sleep, I thought perhaps my back would be better. When I awoke, I took a hot shower thinking that would help the muscles. I don't know if it did but I needed a shower anyway. I'm not walking all that well as I can feel pressure in my spine and want to scream with every step. OMG, the last time I experienced my back blowing out, that required a visit to the ER which led to multiple tests and where we discovered a fissured disc, another disc that is bulged out, and a nerve that gets annoyed (that's putting it nicely) very easily. When this nerve gets annoyed, it lets me know, real quick. Not really looking for answers just need to vent a little. SueLynn
Guest guest
Sue...I feel ya n that sucks major! I do things like that...keep going when I shouldn't. I have been thrown down to the floor when that pain hit, good u could still limp. Oh ice packs work better for calming the nerve n numbing it a little. Of course it also helps to prevent any swelling n irritation that can occur as well. What works best for me is ice packs on back, then lay flat on back with legs elevated to reduce the pressure on spine n nerves. U could use pillows or the edge of a couch. Get the legs up though not just the knees...it looks like sitting in a chair but ur laying down. Guest guest
I go to see neurologist on Thursday. Not the back doctor mind you but someone who is somewhat familiar with the case. I need to do a follow up for the VNS so this is just as well. Since he has been with me from the beginning, he also is aware of the migraines. I managed to get out of bed okay just had some issues walking a little. I honestly don't know what to think at this point regarding my back damage and just how far it has gone but what I am beginning to think is it might be time to revisit the idea of surgery again. Being as I went through 2 years of pain management and 11 months of therapy and all that amounted to was nothing but more pain, I think we are at the crossroads again to determine what's next? That is just my thought. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks for your thoughts. SueLynn

Guest guest
I will Mike... I appreciate your thoughts. I believe we aren't going to do any more tweaks with the VNS (it's epilepsy related), five seems to be the magic number as it is working after these many months. I can't help but wonder when is my back going to quit working again and for how long. As I stated to my husband the other night, I went through multiple types of therapy for 11 months which involved steroid shots and physical therapy which did nothing but already cause more damage to a currently damaged area. It has been discovered physical therapy does not work and steroids or pain medication does not work yet. I think it's time another approach is taken. I feel it is the only way to resolve this issue especially now that that we have seen these blow outs to my back are still going to continue. Sorry to vent, I'm just upset because I actually thought this was solved but apparently it was only a band aid and that just annoys the hell out of me knowing that we spent all of that money. SueLynn sue lynn good luck on the VNS everything should be ok. Keep me posted ok?
Guest guest
Sue Sorry you are having a rough time of it now. I hope they find out what is causing your pain and give you a viable solution for it soon. Re: Well I did it this time.. ACK! I go to see neurologist on Thursday. Guest guest
How awful!!! I don't know how you made it. I know I couldn't walk even 1/4 mile and back. And it is really a shame our SCS don't help with muscle pain only nerve pain. I have fibro and so far they don't have anything to help with that. I hope you the opportunity to rest and start feeling better soon. Guest guest
Well, I went to the neurologist this afternoon and let me tell you I think we spent more time talking about my back than anything else. The back area isn't his expertise but he knows a little bit about it to give me a professional opinion. After explaining what was going on and filling in the gaps where he was a little unsure I believe we might have somewhere to start. Since I have the disk and film from my previous MRI his professional opinion is to begin with having a new MRI. His professional opinion is we can view previous disc and most current disc view to see the comparisons, changes, etc. Oh, the other thing is he suggested that I use Lidocaine patches on the lower part of my back for now as I have some that are left over from previous and I have a prescription which I haven't filled yet. He also gave me a sample of Zanaflex to take at night. I have a prescription for Flexeril however I was sleeping for 11 hours with it whereas the Zanaflex should help cut the hours on that. Waiting for the MRI date but I believe it will be sometime next week. Will keep everyone posted. SueLynn
