Hi toni....In response to crawling....my son Ethan has NO problems so far with anything, he's the same in progress as our 1st son (who doesn't have blephs)....Ethan has been crawling since he was about 7+ months, he is standing by himself for a long time before falling over, hasn't got down the whole *take a step* yet:)....but VERY soon, he has taken 1 or 2 tiny steps before falling over though, he's been walking with his walker for about 2 months now! he is 11 months old, his 1st b-day is JAN 24th 04!!! my our 1st son is JAN 25!!! and he will be 5 years old....anyways, Ethan is developing exactly like our 1st son, my best friend has a boy 5 weeks younger than ethan and he still can't crawl! So I think Ethan is quite advanced comparing:)....

I read all these e-mails with such bad things about having blephs, I don't see any of those things! I am sure there are different degrees of blephs, but when I have read some e-mails I get off feeling so sad, but happy, because other than Ethan having *small eye-lids* thats all that's different with him:)....Hope I am wording this the right way, I don't won't it to sound negative...I just feel Ethan can do ANYTHING normal his brother could do, just becasue he has blephs ( small eye-lids) doesn't make him different from you or me:)

is almost 10 months old and is just now tolerating being on his stomach.

He

prefers to scoot around on his bottom (he was an early " sitter " and sat very

steadily).

He also has always had very strong legs and pulls himself up to stand now.

In every other way developmentally he has been on time or early.

I think his reluctance to being face down is a combination of his own reaction

to the

severity of his visual impairment when on his stomach, since his eye openings

were

only 1mm until he had his first surgery. he also hated his stroller, being so

low to the

ground, but loved being put in the shopping cart up high or in a backpack.

Starting

from 5 weeks old, when carried, he would squirm to be in a position where he

could

throw his head backwards over our forearms, so he could see better out of the

tiny

slits of his eye openings. he still seems to use this scope of vision

occassionally, even

though he can see much more now. (at least he is very flexible an d has a very

strong

neck!)

Now that he's older and each surgery has progressively opened his eyes more, he

doesn't mind the stroller as much and will put himself on his stomach in

attempts to

slither towards what scooting can't access. I think his curiousity has begun to

replace

his need to remain in his comfort zone!

I think eventually they all grow curious enough to want to start exploring

independently, but each child's temperament and other factors combine to make it

happen uniquely for each one. My own opinion, of course. :)

Toni- Did you check with your pediatrician? Does she have any

concerns? Or does he seem to be developing within the expected

parameters?

We have a fabulous pediatrician, but is not our first & I kept

saying I felt he was delayed. At first everyone thought it was due to

Bleph & the large hole he had in his heart, but after his heart healed

from heart surgery, he still was delayed. All the specialists were

blaming Bleph but I found no research that corresponded to his delays.

Turns out in addition to Bleph he has cerebral palsy! I was so

relieved he received a diagnosis because since then he has had lots of

therapy and that little scrapper is doing great!

The moral is... you're the mom. If you think something's not quite

right keep seeking answers until you're satisfied.
