Full page in print edition http://www.armytime s.com/community/ opinion/army_ backtalk_ gulfwar_120808/ community/opinion/ army_backtalk_ gulfwar_120808 At last, vindication Report confirms Gulf War illness, but much more must be done By Nichols The National Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans Coalition applauds the Veterans’ Affairs Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War illness for the release of its thorough review of research into illnesses among veterans of Operation Desert Storm. The coalition is heartened that the committee took on the job of finding answers for veterans based on scientific investigation. The committee’s work validates the complaints made by veterans for the past 17 years. Although the committee focused on chemical exposure, its report does not rule out other effects that future work may show contributed to physical damage of Operation Desert Storm veterans. Persian Gulf War veterans knew that something in their bodies was physically damaged. They have been saying this since November 1993, when the first congressional hearings occurred. Their family members have tried to hold their families together while waiting for answers from the government. It has been exceedingly difficult for many of these veterans and their families who were told by their government that their problems were psychological. Many of these veterans have died, forgotten and misdiagnosed. It is time that the government declassify all records that might provide more answers. This country owes it to the more than 600,000 service members who took part in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990-91. This new report is on the right scientific track to find biomarkers and treatment possibilities for more debilitating conditions, following the Department of Veterans Affairs’ decision to compensate not just Desert Storm veterans with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s’ disease) but all veterans with this devastating diagnosis. VA also is covering Desert Storm veterans with brain cancer. But how many other diagnoses and diseases have not been covered that Gulf War veterans are experiencing and dying from? According to VA’s own data, 278,713 disability claims have been submitted from among the 696,842 service members who served in theater during the Gulf War — the highest postwar illness percentage ever seen. After all, their exposures and medical answers might well lead the country and its civilian population to be better prepared to deal with health consequences that could occur if weapons of mass destruction were used inside the continental borders of our own country. But much more needs to be done. Gulf War veterans still are seeking data on a variety of issues among their population, including: • All postwar deaths, correlated by their unit location in theater, cause of death, and age at the time of death. • Cancer occurrences. • Autoimmune disorders. • Cardiovascular and other body system diseases and diagnoses. • Demylinating and osteoporosis disc degeneration. • Esophageal disorders. Gulf War veterans also want dental and visual exams to document their problems in these areas for further research, as well as a systematic study of children of Gulf War veterans who are diagnosed with autism. In addition, all war data and research held by the military and VA that have not been published or reviewed should be released. We are calling for VA and all health care professionals to be proactive in seeking answers. We need all medical researchers to become fully involved to find biomarkers, screening tests and treatment options. We need the government to fully fund this effort. We have waited 17 years, and too many of us are rapidly deteriorating and dying. Many went into their personal bunkers and just gave up, even though they knew the government was not being truthful. It hurts to have to confront your own government over and over again. But we have turned the huge battleship off the false targets and have fired flares to check position on actual targets. Now we need the ammunition — funding — and the commitment of our government and its citizens to confront this issue openly and directly. The National Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans Coalition will listen to the needs of our veterans and launch new legislative initiatives to address their needs. Will the new administration, Congress and VA respond? ——— The writer retired from the Air Force Reserve as a major and is vice chair of the National Vietnam and Gulf War Veterans Coalition.  ------------------------------TAPS LIST FOR PAST MONTH _________________________ _____________Taps for this past month or so.  I Know you all Hate to see these! I am asking you all to help! If you see an obit of a gulf war vet in your paper please send it to me! DSNurse1@...  It is critically important that we keep up with these! We are putting them all on www.honorthenames.com  This may heighten the reality of our situation and push VA, DRS and Researchers to pay attention. We need VA to get us data on DEATHS re age of Death...cause of Death...unit assigned in gulf war! This is invaluable information!  WE have to also push VA to give us data on what other diagnostic codes ie diagnosed known conditions are being seen and at what number! This is critical information to the big puzzle.  This will help all of us still alive! I know that each of these that have passed would want whatever information to be shared to help their buddies still alive. WE are seeing too many young dying! And we must use the data and correlate to age and diagnosis and cause of deaths to get them to really dig better and help us that are left alive! I am very sad and pause to Honor Capt Debbie Judd, Debbie stood with us early in 1994, I still remember when we talked over the phone after she responded to a posting I made for our Gulf War Medical personnel to step forward and help. She brought DR Baumzweiger to the Oregon Meeting in 1995-6, cannt remember the date. She definitely helped by putting together the very first Gulf War Veterans Health Assessment checklist!  There are very young age Gulf War Veterans in this issue of Gulf War Veterans Taps. There are also many well known PILOTS!  May GOD help us soon and the truth to come forth so all these Veterans can be honored by the country they served and laid their lives down when asked by their government. To be not recognized by this country is a Disgrace!  In honor and gratitude to each of them From one Gulf War Veteran Nichols DSNurse1@...   Deborah M. Stagner Family-Placed Obituary USAF SSGT Kekoamanaokeakuakapulani Stagner the son of Dr. Ishmael W. Stagner, II, and Mrs. Carmen Rosita Cuizon Stagner, of Kaneohe, passed away at his home in Moose Creek, Alaska, on Thursday, November 6, 2008. " Koa, " as he was known to his friends, schoolmates, and teammates, attended and graduated from B. Castle High School in 1994, although he was born at Kahuku Hospital, and lived for a major part of his life, in La`ie. In his senior year, he was also the co-captain of his varsity football team and played offensive right tackle for two years at 5'6 " and 168 pounds. Although he was often, dwarfed and outweighed by opponents much bigger than he, Koa always took pride in the fact that in the two years that he was a starter, his quarterbacks were never sacked from his side of the line. He could also be seen on the Castle campus being followed by younger students who quickly learned that if they stayed close to him, they wouldn't get hassled, or lose their lunch money. He was their defender, friend, and senior mentor, and had no patience with school bullies. Shortly after his high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he spent the last fourteen years, and participated in Operations DESERT STORM/SOUTHERN WATCH, ENDURING FREEDOM, AND IRAQI FREEDOM. He was, at the time of his death, preparing for his fourth combat deployment to the Middle East. He received a large number of commendations, medals, and campaign ribbons for his various military experiences including the Air Force Achievement Medal For Valor, and The Air Force Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster (Posthumous). He was a proud member of the elite Air Force Security Forces, which is the USAF version of the US Army Green Berets, and the US Navy SEALS. On June 25,1996, shortly after he completed basic training, his USAFSF unit from Vandenberg AFB was attacked by terrorists at the Khobar Towers, at King Abdul Azziz Air Base, Dahran, Saudi Arabia, and 19 of his fellow airmen were killed. Koa, then an Airman First Class, established a defensive cordon, and was credited with preventing further injuries/death while order was restored to the base. His various duty posts included Vandenberg AFB, CA; Araxos Air Base, Greece; Nellis AFB, NEV, Columbus AFB, MISS, where he was part of the famous, " Tuskeegee Airmen, " ; and Balad AFB, Balad, Iraq. His last duty station was at Eielson AFB, Alaska north of the North Pole. Thus he had the opportunity to trade his desert combat boots for government issue snowshoes. Besides his parents, he is survived by his three other brothers, Kealii (Ishmael III), Kealoha (), and Kau`ikeolani (), plus his sister, Makana (Carmael). He also leaves two nephews, and a niece, and a whole host of aunties, uncles, and cousins. In June of 2008 he married his wife, Amy, and inherited her three children, as well. He was known for being an outstanding cook, with rare barbecue skills, and his shoyu chicken was the talk of all the posts to which he was assigned. His obsession with cleanliness, was also well known, and he, and his troops, won a number of unit inspection awards. On Friday, November 14, 2008, a special memorial service was conducted for him at the Eielson AFB Chapel. In attendance was the base commanding general, and members of his own unit, the 354th SFS. They said their final farewells to him with a long standing Security Forces tradition, " the last guardmount. " In this ceremony, roll call was made, with appropriate responses for those either present, on duty, or on deployment. Then came the call, " Sergeant Stagner, " with no response. A second call was then made, " Sergeant Stagner, " with no response. A third and final guard mount call rang out loudly and clearly, " Sergeant K. Stagner. " The ensuing silence was then followed by wrenching sobs from his detachment, and then a bugler played, " Taps. " Friend, buddy, unit mate, son, brother, and comrade-in arms was saluted and remembered. Funeral services will be held at the Kane`ohe LDS Stake Center, across from King Middle School in Kaneohe. The public viewing will be from 9 to 11 am, with a chapel service to follow from 11 to 12 pm. Lunch will be served to those who wish to attend the burial which will be at the Hawaii State Veteran's Cemetary at 2pm. The family requests that there be lei and smiles only.
