Guest guest
Donna, My Josh is very small also. He isn't even on the chart - probably 1st %. But his weight and height are proportionate and he is a healthy and active 7th month old, hitting all of his developmental milestones. He is a foster child, so I'm not real sure about the parent's stature. I haven't been too worried. The pediatrician told me to try to get him to eat more. You know that's impossible. They will only eat what they will eat. Let me know if you find a related condition so I can inquire with my doctor. Annette --https://home.comcast.net/~agarrett00/ -------------- Original message -------------- Hi ~Its been awhile since I've posted here. My daughter Halle has BPES and is 16mos old. At her check up 3mos ago, her weight was in the 5th percentile which concerned the doc a bit. She said she wanted to check her again in 3 mos - which was today. Halle's appetite had improved considerably and I was certain her weight would be way up. I was totally shocked when they told me she had actually lost a bit of weight. She's now in the 3rd percentile (18.1lbs and 30" long). The doctor is wondering if its related to her BPES. She is running a bunch of tests to ensure that there's not some reason she is not gaining weight. She is otherwise very healthy and very active. She has not been sick and seems to have lots of energy. They want to check her for Cystic Fibrosis and had her wrists x-rayed to check her bone growth. They also want her food monitored and recorded for 2 weeks and took a urine and stool sample to run other tests. I am so worried now. My other children are small as well and until today was certain that's all it was. But now I am very concerned.Has anyone else experienced a slower growth with their Bleph babies? Thanks for anyone's opinions or experiences!Donna
Guest guest
Hi Donna, I just looked at my baby book of Ethan, and when he was 1 1/2 years old, he was 24 lbs, and his height was 33 inchs, and to us he was small as our first son Tyler, born without bleph was heavier and taller than that! Children come in all shapes and sizes:) everyone in my family goes on how little Ethan is now, he is 2 1/2 now and weighs 30 lbs, there is nothing of him just very lean and tall. My nephew is 9 months younger than Ethan, but weighs a huge 39 lbs, 9 lbs more than Ethan!!! he is a little buddha, so cute:) So don't be discouraged, good luck with the tests on Halle and we will be thinking of you, let us know how everything goes:) Leanne (NZ) -- blepharophimosis Slow growth (physical)? Guest guest
Dear Donna, I hope all goes well for Halle at the doc office. My daughter Rose was the first born with BPES in our family and she doesn't seem to have any growth problems. Infact she is rather tall for 11 months. I believe she is 23lbs. We figure she is that tall cause her daddy is 6'5. I will put your family on my church prayer list and again I hope all goes well at the docs... Guest guest
Hi Donna My Aedan has bleph and is quite big, so there may not be a correlation. I also have heard so often that pediatricians often put a lot of importance on weight when there is absolutely nothing medically wrong with the children. It is those darn charts that they put so much importance on.
Guest guest
Hi Leanne, Thanks for your reply! I know I keep telling myself that she is fine. My 7yo daughter only weighs 42lbs for heaven's sake! I am only 5'3" and weigh 120lbs and my hubby is only 5'4" and weighs about 145!!! I kept telling the doc that there is no way that we are going to have big kids but she has me panicked nonetheless! I love that she's thorough but hate that she's planting all these seeds of doubt in my mind that maybe there is something wrong. Anyway thanks for your reassurance - its exactly what I need!! Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who replied! As I said to Leanne, I know its not out of the norm that she is tiny - in fact, it would be stranger if she were big! But once a doctor starts mentioning things like Cystic Fibrosis and other problems, it just freaks me out and I become so paranoid that maybe there is something wrong. Halle is a great little eater but, its true, you cannot force a toddler to eat! They eat what they want, when they want! I'm supposed to be adding more cream to her food, the high fat yogurt, lots of butter on her toast, etc. But I hate to be stuffing her with all these high fat foods - it doesn't seem right to get her used to eating like this. I will let you all know how her test results turn out. The screening for celiac, iron count, etc came back fine. Thanks again gals! Hugs, Donna > Hi ~ > Its been awhile since I've posted here. Guest guest
Hi, My neighbor's little girl (4yrs old) was just not gaining weight or growing like she should and it turned out she had a parasite of all things...who would of thought of that? But, at least the dtrs were thorough and it turned out to be a minor thing. So don't worry, it's good to gets things checked out and taken care of early, if there is something or put your mind to rest if there is nothing. Hang in there. Let us know what happens. Guest guest
Well put Donna, we agree completely!! They put us on tender hooks also when Hollys weight dropped on the 'chart' and yet she had put on weight but just not enough that they had hoped. I think they make us completely paranoid and yet if they are gaining weight that is all that matters, they had no charts years ago when I was a baby!!! Guest guest
Hi again Donna, Yes, well it is probably inevidable (sp) that she is going to be wee:) going by yourself, and your husbands height and weight:) Whats funny with Ethan is that his weight when he was born was 9 lb 13oz! His brother Tyler was 9 lb 7 oz! but after birth Tyler (without bleph) has always been bigger than he is??? Anyways, keep us up to date with Halle's tests:) Leanne. -- blepharophimosis Slow growth (physical)?>>Hi ~>Its been awhile since I've posted here. My daughter Halle has BPES>and is 16mos old. Guest guest
Hi Donna just catching up on mails since we have been away. My daughter Emy is tall, exceptionally tall, she is the height of a 13-14yr old at the age of 9 - and is as tall as many of my friends. My husbands family are all over 6 ft and my side are mostly tall too - the doctor and Ped etc used to tell me things that could be wrong with her for growing so quickly - and worry me into all sorts of places. however she is growing into a perfectly happy healthy 9 year old - just tall!! I wanted to share this with you as I spend many nights worrying about stuff I was told, but everything has sorted itself. Im not saying dont listen Im just giving our experience. Hope all is well.
