Guest guest
Nina, I noticed the same thing with Josh's eyes. He had his sling surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago and the swelling seems to be gone. His right eye is open more than the left. It isn't a huge difference, but noticable to me. His eyes aren't open as much as I expected they would be either. Still kind of squinty, but I haven't had anyone question me if he is Asian since the surgery. Annette --https://home.comcast.net/~agarrett0 0/ -------------- Original message -------------- Hi everyone,Is there a great risk of the eyes becomeing uneven after sling surgery? i know it has only been 4 full days after surgery but 's right eye is noticeably higher than her left. It is more swollen but it seems lifted tighter than the other. Nina
Guest guest
Hi Annette, I just had a response from a brother of a freind of mine who is an eye surgeon. I sent him a few pictures and he said that it is very hard with sling surgery to get the eyes even. muscle resection yields the best results. he also said not expect it to improve but that at her age(3) slings do not tend to last long. Does not make me feel any better but I thought you might find it interesting. nina Nina, I noticed the same thing with Josh's eyes. Guest guest
Nina, Thanks for passing that along. What does it mean "not last very long"? Josh is only 7 months old, so he is still growing fast. I asked my surgeon about this, but he was very noncommital. I have assumed Josh would need epicanthus surgery by the time he was 4-5 years old, but have never gotten a clear idea on how often the sling has to be re-done. Josh is a foster child and he social worker is pushing to find out what his medical future may hold in "the worst case scenario" so she can fully inform potential adoptive families. Let me know if you get anymore information about this. Thanks. Guest guest
Annette, Dr. Olitsky is my family friend. He works out of Kansas. I am not sure how long the results may last but that it does differ from person to person. He did imply that in some cases donor fascia does last. There are better results when fascia comes from the patient. He told me that usually at around 6 years old the leg has fascia that can be used. This has a better result in taking. I guess when a child grows and over use the sling becomes less effective. He did also say that he is a very conservative doctor and unless vision is impaired, he prefers to wait until he is able to use patient's own fascia. Unfortunately for , it seems as if the " notch " in her right eye might not get better, so she will be left with uneven eyes(something she did not have before). It is so disheartening. We debated about doing the ptosis surgery because a few doctors told us not to. In Josh's case, being that he is so young, the likelyhood is he will need at least one more ptosis surgery. had both ptosis and epicanthal surgery at once, but it looks like she will need a least one more to correct the problem. I hope this is helpful. Do you know how to post pictures to the sight? Do I just attach them to a message? Nina Nina, Thanks for passing that along. What does it mean "not last very long"?
