Guest guest
Hi , My daughter is 5 years old. We have been using many artificial tear fluids and gels. We are currently using Systane for drops in the day and at night Refresh PM gel, preservative free. They work OK and clean out the eyes. We have to do the drops several times a day depending on the season. We had a humidifier installed in our heating vents also. I am sure your doc will tell you that the gunk is probably because the eye is dry because it doesn't close properly. My daughter had her tear ducts plugged by the doc because tears are actually drying to the eye (salty?). This seemed odd to me, but I am learning as we go along also. We also see a cornea specialist regularly because we want to be sure the eyes are not being damaged by the dryness. We are constantly trying different brands of drops, just looking for that miracle. If anyone has a great product they can recommend, I am all ears. Pam
Guest guest
Hi My daughter, Kirsten (4 yrs), had exactly the same problem when she was that age. If I gently pushed just under the inner corner of her left eye, next to her nose then pus would pour out. Her left eye was always full of gunk. I took her to a GP who did a pus swab and diagnosed that she had a bacterial infection of her tear sac. A 5 day course of oral antibiotics (augmentin in her case) solved the problem straight away. This has been going on too long if she already has sores and you are right to be concerned. It sounds like she should be seen by a doctor. Let us know of the outcome. If anyone has a great product they can recommend, I am all ears. > > Pam > Hi Pam, Your daughter's story is all too familiar with me but I am almost 37. I have had chronic dry eye since childhood. The brands you are using is exactly what my Doctor suggest for me and I just stock up. And yes, I have those 'plugs' or 'inserts' (in the tear ducts) too. I don't even know they are there and often, the Doctor will also swab my eye with a yellow ointment to see how dry my eyes are, any damage, etc...Sounds like you are on the right track and in good hands...but I do have a few suggestions...a few times a day use 'hot packs', or wash cloths ran under very warm/hot water and press (not rub)the washcloth on my eyes and let the steam sooth and relax my eyes. This also helps to 'clean' off any ointment leftover from the night before. Also, (this may be something for a young child to get used to)...After I put the ointment in my eyes for the night, I tear some saran wrap (about 4-5 inches wide) and place it smoothly over my eyes and above nostrils and then place a satin eye mask (found for about 4.00 at drug stores) and I fall fast asleep. This was suggested to me by my surgeon's nurse. It really is less messy of a procedure and keeps the eyes moist through the night. I have not had any problem with the plastic sliding. I think you're in good hands from your Dr's recommendations. Smiles, a G from Seattle
