Guest guest
Hello , I had surgery once almot 2 years ago. I have done pretty well although was told that I need to have another as I am completely blocked in all sinuses again. I so have samter's as I get asthma, polyps and am allergice to aspirin. What has helped me stay overall ok after the surgery was using a water pic adapted to a nose attachment and I do a strong warm water with salt rinse every morning and night. If I skip this for a couple of days, I can tell the difference immediately. My Dr. claims that the rinse along with flonase will keep the situation under control longer. Hope this helps Uta Uta Peckman 8070 La Jolla Shores Drive #186 la Jolla, Calif. 92037
Guest guest
I just had surgery on Thursday (yesterday). It's the second time I've had it - first time was in winter 2001. What's the recuperation like? I don't remember the first one at all. When can I expect to be out- & -about. The packing is coming out next Thursday ... do I need to walk around with gauze under my nose all week??? I really feel bad for people who have multiple polypectomies. It's such an uncomfortable surgery and recuperation. I appreciate any advice from those who've been here/done it. /Avi > Hello , > > I had surgery once almot 2 years ago. Guest guest
See http://personal.ecu.edu/wuenschk/Anosmia-Polyps.htm for an assortment of docs on dealing with polyps. I've only had the surgery three times, am doing all I can do keep the fourth as far in the future as I can. Rhinocort worked well for me, but only when it was available in a puffer -- the water-based spray did not seem to help. I keep hoping that Rhinocort will follow the lead of Nasacort and market a CFC-free nasal inhaler. I typically find only the first couple of days post surgical are bad. I have never had to wait more than four days to have the packing removed, and for the most recent two surgeries my doc did not pack me very tight. The first was a real bitch, but that was back in the dark ages when it was not done endoscopically. If you want to see how awful I looked after that surgery, and some of the unpleasant details, see http://personal.ecu.edu/wuenschk/nose-history.htm . The surgery is much better these days! One tip -- stay away from drugs and foods that thin the blood for a few days, and do irrigate once the packing is out, and keep doing it daily. My doc told me that the daily irrigations are the most important part of my therapy. It really helps. Karl W. Post Surgery Care Hello,Relatively new member here -- fresh from sinus surgery this past Monday (polyps/opacification). I have not been placed fully in the Samter's camp as I have had sinusitis/polyp issues for the past year (or more), apparent salycilate sensitivity but no indications for asthma. I suspect a contributor to my problems was being placed on aspirin in 2002 for another medical issue.I am interested in any thoughts on regimens that might help prevent regrowth of polyps. From what I am reading here it appears that an inhaled steroid is typical? My latest scrip is for Rhinocort. (I didn't like either Nasonex or Flonase.) I do not like the idea of having to use something daily and would be interested to hear the experiences of others. (Also, my doctor does not think I would qualify for desensitization at Scripps though he would reluctantly do it here if I insisted.)Thank you for the helpful board. --
Guest guest
Thanks for the replies -- Uta, sorry to hear another surgery is recommended. I have also found irrigation to be very helpful -- both pre and post op -- although I gather most patients are not doing the level of irrigation suggested by many on the board, and it's not exactly what is recommended by my ENT who recommends frequent saline irrigation (30-40x per day the first 2-3 days after surgery) with one of the standard saline sprays. I personally find the warmed up saline far more tolerable than the cold OTC sprays. I have been using a Neti pot (boiling the water, etc.) with a pre- packaged rinse but I think I will pick up distilled water -- the infection warnings are a tad scary. I was able to get to regular tylenol (mainly for headache) after the second day -- stronger stuff did help me get through the first day and half or so. Ice packs helped with the swelling the first couple of days. My ENT also suggested the use of humidified air. I plan to go back to work next week (possibly part time)-- feeling pretty good though without a whole lot of stamina. I suspect I'm not tolerating the antibiotic well -- if there is a side effect I will find it. Here's to speedy recoveries!!!
Guest guest
Karl, Thanks for the links. I had snooped around your site before but am obviously feeling a bit more motivated to stay on top of things. My sympathies on the earlier surgeries -- it seems as though both the surgical and packing techniques have advanced. I don't really have any major complaints at this point. --
Guest guest
Hi , I have had four polypectomies and the most helpful thing I have found is Singulair (or Zyflo or Accolate, whichever one works for you). My ENT says he has seen a great reduction in polyp regrowth when people take these after surgery. Or at least a delay in polyp regrowth. I also find a hypertonic saline solution called ENT-SOL to be very helpful. I use it to get everything out of my nose before I use the Nasonex (I say use whichever steroid nasal spray you like, I happen to like the Nasonex the best). I don't know why your doctor would do the desensitization if you haven't shown the aspirin sensitive asthma. Perhaps it just hasn't developed yet. It took about two years from my first symptoms for all three " arms " of Samter's to develop. I personally try to take care of my nose every day, although sure there are some days I forget to use the spray. But the longer I go without using it the quicker I am going to be back in the OR. Good luck Lori
Guest guest
Lori, Thank you for the info. I may have more accurately said the doctor would reluctantly be willing to do an aspirin challenge to really pin down my sensitivity. But it seems that there is probably enough evidence w/o going through that process. I'm still investigating the post-op med recommendations and it's helpful to have the experiences of others. I've found a nasal rinse I like also and feel that has been a huge help both pre and post-op. I think I'm mainly trying to work myself up to using daily medications but if that's the best option -- and helps avoid surgery -- so be it. B. Guest guest
Hi , How exciting for you and your family - it's hard to see them go into surgery and post surgery but it's worthwhile. My son Keaton is now 8 1/2 years old. We put vitamin E cream (30,000 IU) on his scars after his sling surgery. Because the stitches went into his eye brows you can't really see them. We're using Dermatix on the scars after his 2nd surgery as the scars on the inside of his eyes are more noticeable. Dermatix is behind the counter and may not have been available 8 years ago. Good luck with everything with your daughter. el. Guest guest
Hey ! Great to hear the surgery went ahead as planned! Could you please post some photos of before and after?? went to see the surgeon today, and she is due to have her eyelid lift operation done in March! So I'd love to see and hear how you got on! is 7 months old now, so she'll be 9 months getting the op done. I was recommended a product called Bio Oil for any scars.. I used it while pregnant for stretch marks and found it great... but recently I was advised to use it for the reduction of any scar type, so I plan to have it on hand for when has her operation. I was also told that antibiotic cream should be applied to where any incision was made, but that should be prescribed by your surgeon/doc I'm sure. Look forward to hearing from you! Kildare, Ireland blepharophimosis Post surgery care Happy New Year everyone! My seven and a half month old daughter just had silastic sling surgery on both eyes on Thursday. She's doing great thankfully! It's amazing watching her notice new things - like a mobile above her swing! Just looking for any advice on mananging her healing. Her doctor recommended Vaseline for her incisions, which obviously we are following. I asked if we needed any of those scar-preventing type creams and he said we could try them. Any advicce/input on what worked for you would be appreciated. Thanks,Michigan, US Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.
