I'll share an experience of mine, and that might help you with your decision....We bought a new house in Nevada, where the water is so awful, everyone who can afford it gets a reverse osmosis system installed in their home. When the salesman came to our house to show us his product, he brought a testing kit, to test the purity of the water. He tested our tap water against his reverse osmosis system water. I then also had him test the water that we bought at The Water Place, (which uses the industrial sized water filtering equipment--ozone, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light). You can probably guess which water showed up as being the cleanest---the water I bought in 5 gallon containers at The Water Place. We thanked him for coming and I still buy my water at The Water Place for 30 cents a gallon. It might be a little more inconvenient, but I know I am getting the cleanest water I can get. > I am also looking for a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement for my > two kids, ages 4 and 2. We've been using Twinlab's Allergy Multi-caps. Looking at the label, it does contain copper -- 334 mcg per capsule -- so not sure if this will work for you. Guest guest
A copper free multi Vitamin is available from Allergy Research Group and is called Multi Vi Min. Check it out if copper is an issue for your kids. That's what we use for our son. sanjay stikku@... [ ] Water Filter and multi-vitamin Hi List, I am currently using the Brita water filter, to filter water for my family. I understand this is not ideal, so I am looking for another one. Can anyone make a good suggestion? The price does not matter, as long as it's good. I am also looking for a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement for my two kids, ages 4 and 2. Currently they take Animal Parade. Andy mentioned to me that my son (severe allergies and digestive problems) could use more minerals. After having no luck searching the Health food store, I tried to get a suggestion from my son's current Dr. He sent me one that cost twice as much as Animal Parade, and almost matched the Animal parade. How frustrating! The only difference was more copper. My son seems to be copper toxic so this may not be a good choice. I would appreciate knowing what you all use for your children. We switched to the Pur filter that attaches to the faucet, which states that it removes mercury as well as other products. It appears to be working fine, and you switch it when you want filtered water, and when you don't. It also reduces to a drip when it is used up, so you know when to change it. My only complaint is that we seem to use up the replacement filter cartridges relatively quickly (approx. 2 weeks is my estimate). If cost isn't a problem, then I would recommend this one. It is called PUR Ultimate, we purchased it at a Costco several months ago. It says: Reduces Lead 98% Mercury ne (a pesticide) Atrazine (a herbicide) Benzine 2,4-D Asbestos Sediment Chlorine Bad Taste & odor Removes Microbiological Cysts Cryptosporidium (99.99%) Giardia (99.99%) Also reduces Trihalomethanes (THM's) Drinking water chlorination by-products linked to increased risk of cancer That is from the box there is alot more data inside. For example under mercury it states that it removes from 74 to 92% depending on the amount in the water filtered. For more details I would direct you to there website http://www.purwater.com/ By the way, I have no connection to this company, I just found their product in the store and it seems to be working well enough for us. I'm sure there are other products out there such as the reverse osmosis process ones, but cost was an issue for us. Joe Marciano

Guest guest
Joe, Water filters are (sometimes, usually, always...?) rated by NSF International which is an independant organization. You should check what the system is rated for. Many meet their Standard 42, which is just vague stuff like taste, odor and color. Some meet Standard 53 which has quite a list of bad stuff like lead and pesticides. The best of the carbon block based ones can meet this criteria. Unfortunately I don't have a complete list. I would think for our kids (anyone actually) Standard 42 is quite inadequate. Somebody's probably gonna ask so I'll go ahead and say what I know.... I used to be an active Amway distributor and know that their water system which is a 4 stage carbon block system was the first carbon based system to be able to meet Standard 53 a few years back. (If you want to go better than carbon block, I believe you'de be looking at reverse osmosis technology filtration which are more than triple the price. The Amway under the counter model wholesales at $370. (retail 466.) (I think the little faucet is extra but this catalog isn't really clear to me right now...) It has a filter change light on it that is nice. I think around 6 months is a common usage length for the filter -replacement filter is $81. (+tax + ship) I still have a distributorship and would be happy to let anyone buy through me (...just so you know, I wouldn't make any $ at the purchase, but all products have a point value and at month's end they determine bonus, so I actually would make a little money off it.) Bottom line is I'm pretty sure you want to look for an NSF STD. 53 rating.... Guest guest
Kathy, Probably anything can be rigged up by a plumber-ish kind of person. You just have to route the water to flow through the unit. With a bathtub you'de want to route both the hot and cold...you could probably do both through one unit.
