Horizons Report -Refocusing on HIV Prevention

An increased focus on HIV prevention could dramatically reduce new

infections over the next decade, as noted in an article in the Feb 6

issue of Science.

The latest issue of the Horizons Report responds to a growing call

for a renewed focus on HIV prevention by highlighting practical

findings from operations research studies conducted among key

populations in Kenya and South Africa. These findings have important

program and policy implications for moving the HIV prevention agenda

forward in Africa and elsewhere.

in a Mining Community: Findings from the Carletonville Mothusimpilo

Intervention Project: 1998 to 2001

Describes findings from an intervention study in a South African

mining town that assessed the impact of a targeted program of HIV and

STI prevention and service delivery.

Horizons is a global operations research initiative designed to: 1)

identify and test strategies to improve HIV/AIDS prevention,

treatment, and care programs; and 2) disseminate research findings

and promote their utilization with the aim of replicating and scaling

up successful interventions.

Horizons is implemented by the Population Council in partnership with

the International Center for Research on Women, the International

HIV/AIDS Alliance, PATH, Tulane University, Family Health

International, and s Hopkins University. Horizons is funded by

the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief through the U.S.

Agency for International Development (USAID).
