Chifu, Thanks for your immense contribution and your recent posting on New UN study on FGM refers. This coincided with what transpired in Parliament last week. The justice committee which was amending the sex offence bill dropped

FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), marital rape and sex harassment. I am particularly concerned with FGM. Despite vigorous attempts by female lawmakers to retain FGM on the bill, recommendations to trash it carried the day. Though this was to appease men chauvinists or risk loosing the entire bill. It is hypocritical and cowardly of parliamentarians to hide behind culture in defending FGM.

While their daughters never undergo this rite of passage. Instead they should have discouraged their constituents from engaging in this retrogressive norm which is outdated and useless. In your posting on New UN study showed dangers of FGM for childbirth as deliveries get complicated and dangerous. As a result of scar formation, “this scar tissue is relatively in elastic and lead to obstruction and tearing of the tissues around the birth canal during child

birth”. We should therefore discard this outdated culture and beliefs which has no place in our modern Kenya. Lets incite outrage and compel Honourable members to revisit this issue where stiff punishment for offenders will be spelt out. With thanks.
